I just woke up from this strange dream about something called The Good Race and decided to wrote this down.

A group of around 7 people (I was among them) wake up in a road in the middle of nowhere. They come to know that they died and now they must reach somewhere they don't know where it is so they can get eternal rest. Then they group up and start to travel to this destiny together.

The journey is filled with weird and funny situations, it's like a Divine Comedy but in an insane way. By some point it is revealed (not to them) that they are being watched by architects and this whole race is a test to see if they're worth it.

There's a crazy scenario where they reach a pool of moving sand with a 'dangerous' warning but something happens, someone falls in it, the others try to help and all of them end up swallowed by the sand. They woke up back on Earth (which is not the Earth, but another level of the game to test them what they would do if that really went back to the life).

By this point I woke up with my brain hurting but something in the last seconds told me 3 of the people in the group were angels and demons disguised to watch/help/delay us and the actual group were the other four. Then I came here and wrote this.

PS: Now I'm wondering if this was just a dream or if I'm being tested and watched by the architects lol

By meta-linguistic I simply mean 'beyond language'.

To make the point clear: a hundred different languages can use a hundred different sentences or words to refer to the same one concept, surely it follows that 'concepts in and of themselves' are - to some degree - beyond language?

I wondered if you might point me in the direction of some philosophers who have explored this matter and would appreciate your thoughts on it.

Are there any language learning sites or apps out there that teach based on the assumption that the user has an intuitive understanding of syntax and morphology? I'm tired of scouring Google for online guides that end up being full of holes or falsities, and I'm not a big fan of the approach apps like Duolingo or Rosetta Stone take.

I've researched metalinguistic awareness in multilingual children and the overwhelming correlation between multilingualism and critical reading skills, grades in school, not to mention future success as measured by income, is a great reason to make sure my child grows up bilingual (not to mention the tangible benefit of being able to communicate with a lot of different people and have access to ideas in their original language) but as a linguistics geek I've started to wonder what language mix in particular would yield the highest level of metalinguistic awareness.

Currently I'm thinking Chinese (Mandarin), Icelandic, and Finnish. The three languages are very different in a variety of ways: morphology, phonology, syntax, alphabet... Chinese has a lot of different fricatives and affricates compared to other languages, not to mention it's tonal. Finnish has 16 cases and utilizes vowel and consonant length to the fullest ([taka], [ta:k:a], [taka:],[[tak:a],[ta:k:a:],[ta:kan] etc all have different meanings). Since Finnish in terms of grammar and pronunciation is very similar to Japanese, in combination with Chinese (50% of Japanese words are Chinese in origin) learning Japanese should be easy in the future. Icelandic because it's a Germanic language that has retained all of the grammar points that are disappearing from current Germanic languages like case and gender. Also, it hasn't changed much in over a thousand years so if you're ever in a time-machine accident, you could converse with vikings :)

I don't think simultaneous bilingualism in three languages is hard to accomplish in practice if both parents speak a different language and the child lives in an area with a dominant third language.

(If thinking languages in terms of usefulness I'd go with English, Chinese, and Spanish but that's not what interests me) If I knew more about for example, Hebrew and Inuit languages, I might consider them.

Rephrasing: what three languages are as different from each other as possible in as many ways as possible?

Can someone explain the view of metalinguistic nominalism and provide an argument or two in favor of the view?

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

I said "hey look, an escaPEA"

No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
