A list of puns related to "Folklore"
Lots of people know about stuff like the Wendigo or Bigfoot, but what's your favorite obscure monster from foklore?
One of my favorites is the Nucklavee from Scotland, which is kind of like a centaur, only it has no skin. Its "breath was thought to wilt crops and sicken livestock, and the creature was held responsible for droughts and epidemics on land despite being predominantly a sea-dweller ".
There's some really interesting stuff out there. What other monsters are there that you think people might not have heard of?
Hallo!
I recently have been reading about all kinds of folklore and the unexplained, and it's no surprise that Native American, Scandinavian and Japanese tales are widespread.
I'm Dutch myself (posting in English to reach a wider audience), and was wondering if there's any Dutch (or West-European, by extend) folklore of that kind. Scary stories, urban legends, cryptids.. They're all equally interesting, so if any of you know any stories or know where I can find them I'd love to hear about it!
Edit: I read through all your comments, and they were super helpfull, thank you! I have plenty to read about now :)
In honor of evermore, tell us your favorite song from the album and we will guess what your favorite song on folklore is. If you'd rather tell us your favorite song from folklore and we guess your favorite song from evermore, that works too.
Edit: since this is getting really repetitive, you can also comment your favorite LYRICS from folklore and we'll guess your favorite SONG from evermore, or vice versa.
I'm always so sad to hear that Irish folklore/mythology isn't really taught/talked about commonly in Ireland besides children's books and whatnot. I'm a huge mythology nerd and I've honestly found Irish folklore absolutely fascinating! It's dark, complex, and just captivating. There are so many cool gods and figures and the stories are epic! Honestly, after living here for a while and actually being able to see the amazing landscape/environment in person, it's no wonder that the ancient peoples were so inspired.
I know that most countries are usually kind of out of touch with their native mythology/folklore but I feel like Ireland has something really special that deserves so much more hype.
EDIT: @shanebtops has shared an AMAZING list of reliable and accurate resources in the comments, please check it out if you'd like to read more on the subject :)
Anyone got any sweet Mormon folklore? Like japanese bombers had pic of hawaii temple or a mormon boy had inspiration to invent tv. Or George A Smith's relative seeing big foot. That sort of stuff. I love hearing good stories of an uncle possibly seeing one of the 3 nephites and then the dude vanished lol
I heard about the Karoo Mermaid last week for the first time and thought that was pretty cool. Looking for more interesting stuff like that.
I've been thinking about this but are their any demons in the Megaten games that are whole original creations? All I can think of is the jack frost versions (demonhee-ho , black frost, etc.) But I feel like there might be more.

The main dev (u/Ateo88) has been working on it for over 3 years now, and I recently started helping out as we prepare for launch. There's an old browser based demo (link below), but an updated demo will be out on Steam soon, and Early Access in March. Localization is planned and it's PC only for now, though we hope to port to Mac and Switch in future.
Please consider wishlisting the game as that helps us a lot π Happy to answer any questions below!

I'm a DM currently working on designing a new campaign that will be set in a Feywild-esque world based on various fairytales, folklore, and mythologies. For example, the first adventure is going to be an alternate take on Hansel & Gretel.
When it comes to religion, I'm making it so that the gods themselves are not known, so most people worship one of the archfey lords, who are based on characters from various stories and are patrons of certain emotions or values. They answer to one or both of the High Lords of Summer and Winter. Any of these can be used by warlocks, clerics, or paladins as the source of their power.
Here's what I've got so far.
Archfey | Alignment | Suggested Domains | Symbol |
---|---|---|---|
Titania, High Lord of Summer | NG | Life | |
Maleficent, High Lord of Winter | LE | Order | |
Baba Yaga, Lord of Secrets | LE | Arcana, Death | |
FΓ‘fnir, Lord of Greed | NE | Forge | A gold ring |
Finn McCool, Lord of Courage | LG | Knowledge, War | A salmon |
Ghillie Dhu, Lord of Hope | NG | Life, Nature | |
Lilith, Lord of Desire | CN | Tempest, Trickery | |
Little Red, Lord of Righteous Fury | CG | Grave, Tempest | A severed wolf's head |
Mab, Lord of Dreams | CG | Peace | |
The MorrΓgan, Lord of Fear | N | Grave, War | Three ravens |
NimuΓ«, Lord of Destiny | LN | Light, Knowledge | A greatsword |
Nyarlathotep, Lord of Madness | CE | Knowledge, Trickery | An inverted pyramid |
Pan, Lord of Indulgence | CN | Light | Panpipes |
Any suggestions for other lords, or how to improve the ones I have? I'd like to have at least one for each alignment and domain so am looking for a few more. I'm also not totally set on how I'm going to assign alignment and domains to the ones I have.
I'm not going to spend ages developing a huge amount of lore for each of them, at least until I know who prospective characters might worship, and if they come up with their own ideas then I'll probably allow it. It would just be good to have some ideas to hand :)
Edit: Love all the suggestions so far, keep them coming! I'll keep updating my table with ideas I definitely will add, but there's a good chance I'll add that have been suggested later.
I've also added a symbols column so I can start thinking about that as well. Again, I'm open to suggestions :)
My BFF's daughter is a huge Swifty stan, so my friend and I plotted and I crocheted her a Folklore blanket. My friend designed it by cutting and pasting elements of the sweater together, then I plotted a pattern out on an excel spreadsheet. I worked on in non stop for two weeks! I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out!
EDIT: This is the best I can do with the pattern:
It's a post in the thread below. :-)
I genuinely love Folklore with all of my heart. The lyrics were so near and dear to my heart upon first listen and I feel like it is an album to listen all the way through, in order, every single time, which is rare. I still feel that way! But a sudden sensation started to kick in at some point urging me to play a song from Evermore a while after it came out and then I became completely hooked listening to Evermore, out of order, and oftentimes not even all the way through ever since. Itβs like a magnetic pull, though, how Iβll be listening to Folklore,βand donβt get me wrong, itβs sad in its own rightβ and then Iβll suddenly be bawling my eyes out to Majorie, happiness, or Coney Island. Hell, even Dorothea. The lyrics are so compelling, emotive, and almost fairytale like; it really taps into my imagination, takes me to another world, and makes me feel deeply. Iβm not sure if thatβs just a preference or if there are many people out there who feel like Evermore is truly a standalone masterpiece.
I read a comment that said that many of Taylorβs recent accomplishments, in particular her domination of streaming, is related to folklore & how it βreset the trajectory of her career in a beautiful way.β
This got me thinking - what would things look like for Taylor had the sister albums never happened? I know the obvious answers - it got critics & the general public to take her more seriously as an artist & lyricist, thereβs a whole new branch of indie collaborators sheβs made inroads with, allowed her to find new inspiration in fiction, it turned her into a streaming force, etc. - but what are some more nuanced & specific takes/hypothetical βpredictionsβ about what would have happened from an artistic, personal, or public reception perspective?
Personally I was thinking about: What would TS8 look like? Would LoverFest have been rescheduled instead of canceled? How would the re-recordings fare? But feel free to take this hypothetical in any other direction you might be interested in!
Hello! This is a little post about the folklore and culture I was born and raised into. Feel free to incorporate any of this in your practice.
First character I want to talk about is Baba Dochia (babΔ-old woman). There are many legends about her, but I will talk about the one that is most common.
Dochia was a old bad woman, rich, that had a daughter (lasy, terrible as her mother that loved her) and a step daughter (nice, hardworking, hated by Dochia).
One freezing night, the lazy daughter wanted berries and Dochia sent the step daughter mid night in the freezing cold after berries. The girl went on her way on the mountain, with no warm clothes and got to a field where all the 12 months of the year were gathered, a nice worm place and summer like.
The months welcomed the girl and invited her to stay near the fireplace they were standing around. Asked what was she doing in that cold, the girl told them the story.
The warm months of the year decided to help her and gave her a huge bag of berries to return to her family.
The girl goes back to her house and Dochia starts asking her where did she get those sweet berries that were too good to be true at that time of year. The girl tells the old woman how she met the 12 people and baba Dochia wanted to convince herself, and get more berries from the people.
With nine warm clothes on her, she went outside, looking for the 12 months of the year. As she was getting closer, the weather got warmer so she got rid one by one of her nine old clothes she had on her.
Baba Dochia gets to the place where the 12 months were gathered and demands more berries. Because she was rude, the cold months made the place freezing cold again, and baba Dochia froze to death in that place.
On March from 1st to 9th we celebrate the nine pieces of clothing baba Dochia had on her, the celebration being called Babele (the old women). You basically choose a number from 1 to 9 or you use a formula I forgot to choose your 'old woman'. And the legend says that how your chosen day is going, so will be your whole year.
Another spring celebration is the MΔrΘiΘor. On 1st of March usually men give this small gifts to women in their lives, a white and red string tied around a figure of good luck, or simply a small jewellery. In some places in Romania men receive from women this mΔrΘiΘor too.
You wear this jewellery like whole month (it might be a date for it too, but idk) then take the white and red string and tie around a chosen three, so
... keep reading on reddit β‘First, he pins much of the blame for the affair on both Betty and the other woman (βshe said James get in letβs driveβ as if she enticed him and βyour favorite song was playingβ¦ plus I saw you dance with himβ as in she made him so upset he cheated on her).
And it wasnβt even a case of him making a mistake or not thinking about her! He says βthose days turned into nightsβ and βslept next to her but I dreamt of you all summer longβ. The former shows that he repeatedly did this and the latter shows that he was thinking about her the whole time.
He says βIβm only 17, I donβt know anythingβ but based on the last lyric, he clearly knew that this was cheating and could hurt Betty.
And Iβm so mad at Betty for taking him back. Like girl he didnβt even come clean to you first you had to confront him.
God I just fucking hate James so much. Anyone else feel this way?
I know there are plenty out there. I know The Exorcist, The Mothman Prophecies & The Exorcism of Emily Rose were based on true events. Can you name any others? What were some of your favorites?
The giant spider is one of the most omnipresent monsters in present-day fantasy and gaming but I can't think of any antecedent before Shelob in The Hobbit.
Greek myth has Arachne and there are trickster spider figures in African and American indigenous stories (and apparently one giant people-eating spider in Seneca stories.) But I can't find anything that Tolkien would have been building from when creating what is now a bread-and-butter fantasy monster.
Itβs turning into a nightmare to try and get one to drop. Starstone, Ezra, named world bosses, mythical unicorns and leprechauns donβt drop it. I canβt seem to find a good spot for it and I am poor and canβt afford the 15k gold they are asking for in chat. Anyone have any good spots to try and farm for this thing?
Friends! I was perusing the classes with Taylorβs music today, and I noticed that Mariana has a 20 minute focus flow class from 1/6 that includes my tears ricochet!!!
Please discuss!
Here are examples of books that I found were AMAZING and give me the fairytale/magical feels: Spinning Silver, Into the Heartless Wood, Uprooted, Sorcery of Thorns, A Court of Thorns and Roses, The Language of Thorns, A Forbidden Wish, Lunar Chronicles and Heartless
Books I read and liked (just not amazing): Spin the Dawn, A Curse so Dark and Lonely, An Enchantment of Ravens, and Gilded
Unfortunately I couldnβt get into: Bear and the Nightingale (I had high hopes but did not enjoy), Wintersong, Cruel Beauty, and The Wrath and Dawn
Books I think I may read next (TBR): Echo North, The Darkest Parts of the Forest, Stardust, and Once Upon a Broken Heart
Iβm looking for more recommendations or opinions of my TBR list :)
Iβve been wanting to do this forever because I am a huge Beatles and Gaylor fan but I thought I was the only one who believes both in Gaylor and McLennon (more on that later) but Iβm on break from grad school and bored because omicron and some of y'all showed interest in it so I guess why the hell not.
Before we begin I need to give a little bit of background. If you are not a Beatles fan please just bear with me hereβ¦ and also go listen to Rubber Soul, if you like folklore, you will like it, I promise. Also, Iβm not here to debate John Lennonβs shitty behavior, that is not the focus of this post. If thatβs what you want to talk about please go somewhere else. This is just for fun.
Everyone knows The Beatles. But the reasons for their breakup are still subject of debate. For years, Yoko Ono was blamed for the breakup of a band made up of four grown-ass men, despite the fact that none of the men themselves actually blamed here. Last year, Peter Jacksonβs Get Back documentary (available on Disney plus), made with footage from the Get Back sessions in early 1969, captured The Beatles in their last days as a band, trying to recapture the magic after the tense White Album sessions of 1968. I highly recommend watching the documentary. It is clear that, even though there is tension, the band clearly still loved each other, and wanted to make music together.
There was no one reason for the breakup, in fact, it was a number of factors, beginning with the death of their manager Brian Epstein, who was gay. Epstein died of an overdose in 1967. He had struggled with drug addiction and his sexuality. It is also well-known that he and John Lennon had gone on holiday together in 1963, to Barcelona. Pete Shotton, childhood friend of Lennon, confirms that Epstein and Lennon hooked up on this holiday.
But what I really want to focus on here is the Lennon/McCartney relationship. And I will be telling it through the lens of folklore. I highly recommend the One Sweet Dream podcast which covers the Lennon/McCartney relationship and the breakup as it covers way more than I can talk about here and I would likely bore most of you.
It is well known that Taylor is friends with Stella McCartney, Paul McCartneyβs daughter. She also did an interview with [Sir Paul]
