A list of puns related to "Brownie (folklore)"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brownie_(folklore)
The closest links between the two are that they work for the household and leave forever if presented with clothes.
Historically brownies work in secret and don't like to be seen by the household. Their presence is associated with prosperity of the household. They take offerings of (generally) food but don't accept payment or clothes, and will leave the house forever if they feel insulted or taken advantage of. They can also turn malicious if angered.
A frownie
folklore has to be her best lyricist moment because itβs full on poetry
Lots of people know about stuff like the Wendigo or Bigfoot, but what's your favorite obscure monster from foklore?
One of my favorites is the Nucklavee from Scotland, which is kind of like a centaur, only it has no skin. Its "breath was thought to wilt crops and sicken livestock, and the creature was held responsible for droughts and epidemics on land despite being predominantly a sea-dweller ".
There's some really interesting stuff out there. What other monsters are there that you think people might not have heard of?
Hallo!
I recently have been reading about all kinds of folklore and the unexplained, and it's no surprise that Native American, Scandinavian and Japanese tales are widespread.
I'm Dutch myself (posting in English to reach a wider audience), and was wondering if there's any Dutch (or West-European, by extend) folklore of that kind. Scary stories, urban legends, cryptids.. They're all equally interesting, so if any of you know any stories or know where I can find them I'd love to hear about it!
Edit: I read through all your comments, and they were super helpfull, thank you! I have plenty to read about now :)
Anyone got any sweet Mormon folklore? Like japanese bombers had pic of hawaii temple or a mormon boy had inspiration to invent tv. Or George A Smith's relative seeing big foot. That sort of stuff. I love hearing good stories of an uncle possibly seeing one of the 3 nephites and then the dude vanished lol
In honor of evermore, tell us your favorite song from the album and we will guess what your favorite song on folklore is. If you'd rather tell us your favorite song from folklore and we guess your favorite song from evermore, that works too.
Edit: since this is getting really repetitive, you can also comment your favorite LYRICS from folklore and we'll guess your favorite SONG from evermore, or vice versa.
Good evening r/Alberta! Can anyone point me in a good direction to find books on folklore and mythologies of all indigenous peoples in Alberta?
Special brownie points if there are any such books focusing on folklore and mythological tales from Waiporous or Kananaskis!
Ev bekçisi / Ev iyesi  - in Turkish folklore, an evil spirit, a brownie, in the guise of a snake or an ugly black man with a lower lip hanging down to the belly, burning big eyes and long matted hair.
In Turkish mythology, an evil spirit the spirit of the master of the house.Β It is shown to people in the guise of a snake or an ugly black man with a lower lip hanging down to the belly, big eyes burning like coal, matted hair going down to the toes.Β The house in whichΒ Ev BekΓ§isi livedΒ Β , the owners tried to sell.Β According to legends,Β Ev bekΓ§isiΒ Β also live in abandoned buildings.βββββββ βββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ βββββββ βββββββ βββββββ ββββββ
When aΒ house is being builtΒ inΒ Giresun (A Turkish city on the Black Sea coast), onions, garlic, and coal are hung on the beam (tura), on the doors and at the corners of the walls.Β Then the residents can already be calm from the intrigues of theΒ brownieΒ Β .βββββββ βββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ βββββββ βββββββ βββββββ ββββββ
Ev bekΓ§isiΒ usually turns into a large snake or black moor;Β his lower lip hangs down on his neck, his hair is black, his eyes burn like coals.Β He himself is black, and whoever sees him faints from fear.Β Otherwise, this is an invisible spirit: he lives in an abandoned, empty house, and you can only hear how they open and close the doors, walk the stairs, and make noise.Β The house is shaking as if from an earthquake.Β OrΒ climbΒ into latrines or dirty places, and when they open the door, they quietly leave.Β These are the "lower" spirits (syufli).Β They also live in ruined houses;Β if someone happens to be there, urinate, and so on, his arms, legs or tongue will be taken away.Β This is what the people say: "It was theΒ genie whoΒ Β hit them!"Β ("Cin ΓarpmΔ±Ε!")βββββββ βββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ ββββββ βββββββ βββββββ βββββββ ββββββ
Once a certain Osman-bey, whose family lived in the estate (Γ§iftlik) in the summer, stayed in the city ofΒ KarahisarΒ and, since it was already late, decided to spend the night in the house alone.Β At fourΒ o'clockΒ he walked around the house and, shutting the door tightly, lay down on the bed.Β About an hour later, the doors began to open and close with a noise.Β He thought they were thieves, and, taking a revolver, fired.Β Everything was quiet in the house.Β βMy God, my God!

I'm a huge mythology nerd and I've honestly found Irish folklore absolutely fascinating! It's dark, complex, and just captivating. There are so many cool gods and figures and the stories are epic! Honestly, after living here for a while and actually being able to see the amazing landscape/environment in person, it's no wonder that the ancient peoples were so inspired.
I know that most countries are usually kind of out of touch with their native mythology/folklore but I feel like Ireland has something really special that deserves so much more hype.
EDIT: @shanebtops has shared an AMAZING list of reliable and accurate resources in the comments, please check it out if you'd like to read more on the subject :)
I heard about the Karoo Mermaid last week for the first time and thought that was pretty cool. Looking for more interesting stuff like that.
Edit: I have so many responses to read! It's gonna be a great Saturday. Thank you SO much.
I've been thinking about this but are their any demons in the Megaten games that are whole original creations? All I can think of is the jack frost versions (demonhee-ho , black frost, etc.) But I feel like there might be more.
Hey r/Games!
Ghostlore is an isometric action RPG inspired by popular 90s games such as Diablo. It features:
βΆΒ Southeast Asian monsters, like
π§ββοΈ Jiangshi - Chinese hopping zombiesΒ
πΏ Rakshasa -Β shapeshifters like the D&D monster of the same name
π Pontianak - female ghosts who live inΒ banana trees
βΆΒ Detailed item and character customization
βΆΒ Unique skills and multiclass system
βΆ Crafting and food system
βΆ Tetris-like glyph system
βΆ Procedurally generated maps
If you're from Southeast Asia, a lot of these elements should be familiar to you! If you're not, come find out about our rich culture, which is extremely underrepresented in games. Or just come for the pure hack and slash fun π
The main dev (u/Ateo88) has been working on it for over 3 years now, and I recently started helping out as we prepare for launch. There's an old browser based demo (link below), but an updated demo will be out on Steam soon, and Early Access in March. Localization is planned and it's PC only for now, though we hope to port to Mac and Switch in future.
Please consider wishlisting the game as that helps us a lot π Happy to answer any questions below!

My BFF's daughter is a huge Swifty stan, so my friend and I plotted and I crocheted her a Folklore blanket. My friend designed it by cutting and pasting elements of the sweater together, then I plotted a pattern out on an excel spreadsheet. I worked on in non stop for two weeks! I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out!
EDIT: This is the best I can do with the pattern:
It's a post in the thread below. :-)
I'm a DM currently working on designing a new campaign that will be set in a Feywild-esque world based on various fairytales, folklore, and mythologies. For example, the first adventure is going to be an alternate take on Hansel & Gretel.
When it comes to religion, I'm making it so that the gods themselves are not known, so most people worship one of the archfey lords, who are based on characters from various stories and are patrons of certain emotions or values. They answer to one or both of the High Lords of Summer and Winter. Any of these can be used by warlocks, clerics, or paladins as the source of their power.
Here's what I've got so far.
Archfey | Alignment | Suggested Domains | Symbol |
---|---|---|---|
Titania, High Lord of Summer | NG | Life | |
Maleficent, High Lord of Winter | LE | Order | |
Baba Yaga, Lord of Secrets | LE | Arcana, Death | |
FΓ‘fnir, Lord of Greed | NE | Forge | A gold ring |
Finn McCool, Lord of Courage | LG | Knowledge, War | A salmon |
Ghillie Dhu, Lord of Hope | NG | Life, Nature | |
Lilith, Lord of Desire | CN | Tempest, Trickery | |
Little Red, Lord of Righteous Fury | CG | Grave, Tempest | A severed wolf's head |
Mab, Lord of Dreams | CG | Peace | |
The MorrΓgan, Lord of Fear | N | Grave, War | Three ravens |
NimuΓ«, Lord of Destiny | LN | Light, Knowledge | A greatsword |
Nyarlathotep, Lord of Madness | CE | Knowledge, Trickery | An inverted pyramid |
Pan, Lord of Indulgence | CN | Light | Panpipes |
Any suggestions for other lords, or how to improve the ones I have? I'd like to have at least one for each alignment and domain so am looking for a few more. I'm also not totally set on how I'm going to assign alignment and domains to the ones I have.
I'm not going to spend ages developing a huge amount of lore for each of them, at least until I know who prospective characters might worship, and if they come up with their own ideas then I'll probably allow it. It would just be good to have some ideas to hand :)
Edit: Love all the suggestions so far, keep them coming! I'll keep updating my table with ideas I definitely will add, but there's a good chance I'll add that have been suggested later.
I've also added a symbols column so I can start thinking about that as well. Again, I'm open to suggestions :)
