A list of puns related to "Scots Language"
And I donβt mean which language is most similar overall, I mean which language when listening to it, is most reminiscent of English
I'm not looking to get into a debate on language vs dialect here, and I'm going to call Scots a language for the duration of this post.
Does anyone have any experience with the Scots Language, and if so, how accurate are the Itchy Coo book translations.
This is their page for the Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone translation.
Of course some words were invented for the Harry Potter series, the Latin and Greek -esque words which were used for spells are left Intact, but some of the other words like Quidditch being replaced with Bizzumbaw (Broom Ball).
I'm Scottish myself, but Scots isn't a language that I speak or read - although I can follow the Harry Potter version pretty well due to familiarity with the story - I don't have much idea on the proper pronunciations. I know a few words, but nothing significant.
I know some pronunciations and phonetics from Scots were borrowed in what is now "Scottish Standard English", and that Scots is closely related to English, how closely is a different debate.

Hey folks, I thought this might be of interest to the gamers in the group. Currently Steam does not recognise Gaelic or Scots as language options. A game developer in Scotland is working on a game which features both.
They've started a petition to get Valve to recognise and provide support for both languages. Take a minute to sign up and help us see a different opportunity for videogames from Scotland in the future.

This doesn't have as much "controversial" drama as other threads(YET), but I just think that this is such an astonishing story that it's impossible to ignore. I've never written a large thread like this so let me know if anything's wrong...

TL;DR: An administrator that self-identifies as an INTP Brony has "translated" over 20,000 articles and edited over 200,000 into a horribly bastardized and mangled joke of the actual Scots language, primarily by writing English words in a Scottish accent(a la r/ScottishPeopleTwitter) and looking English words in an online Scots dictionary and picking the first result to replace the English word. The OP comments that "I think this person has possibly done more damage to the Scots language than anyone else in history".
Some users debate if Scots is a distinct language or not
A Scottish user believes that this isn't such a big deal
One user believes that writing in Scots is "just a bit cringey"

One interesting illustration of the apparent distinctness of Geordie is the fact that Australian media in the 1980s saw the need to subtitle and translate much of the speech of AC/DC singer and Newcastle native, Brian Johnson, into Standard Australian English.

The other day I had someone deduce I have Scots ancestry, (which I do, just a wee bit 5 generations back), based on my use of one word. And no, the word was not wee, hah, but I do like that I used it there quite serendipitously.
I am curious as to whether other Kiwis know or use the word, blether (or blather).
I assume Gaelic but was there a language before or during that time?
