Sudak Castle, Crimea [OC]. One of the largest castles I have visited. It's located on a cliff edge over the beautiful Black Sea. To get the whole castle in shot I had to hike pretty far away and merge three photos together. The highest tower is on a smooth rock outcrop and is reached by chain!

How did the Republic of Genoa came into possession of Sudak (coast of Crimea)?
All I have found is some nonsense about Monghke-khan ceding the city to Republic of Genoa in 1266, which is obviously wrong because Monghke died in 1259. Anyway, the territory was at the time controlled by the Mongols / Golden Horde..
Does anyone know how the Genoese gained this colony or is there perhaps some good resource on this?
