He walked in yelling βOFFICER KRUPKE!β Put down a credit card for his row. Feels like I stumbled into a private screening. Might be getting a Spike Lee running commentary with this movieβ¦
I may be in the minority here, but I'm personally a huge fan of Spike Lee's overtly political and satirical style of filmmaking wherein he often makes references to and comments directly on real world politicians, events, protests, etc in both symbolic and literal ways. He likes mentioning real people and and incidents by name, and he's at his best when he's commenting on contemporary racial issues in America (IMO). He has a unique vision that lends itself to making powerful political commentary in cinema while preserving his film's entertainment value.
Recently, however, I feel that Spike has lost his touch just a little bit. Da Five Bloods and Blackkklansman were really good movies in their own right, but I can't help but feel like Spike is trying hard to capture the magic that made his early movies so good (and he's falling a bit short).
Do you guys feel the same way? Were you ever a fan of Spike Lee and his style? Do you like his newer films even more?
I've seen Do The Right Thing several times as it's one of my favourite movies of all time, but it never once dawned upon me that Gus Fring is Buggin' Out. Like I literally cannot believe it's the same person I only found out because I randomly looked at the Wiki article for the movie and recognized the actor's real name. I suppose it's not just how different he looks physically now, but also the fact that Gus Fring and Buggin' Out (and Julian from School Daze) are such different characters. I think that is a testament to Esposito's skill as an actor.
