What has been preventing us from having the subpixels in cameras and screens having the spectral sensitivity/emission curve matching the equivalent color sensing cells in the human eye?

A separate question would be the same thing, but about the dynamic range, the range of brightness from darkest to brightest and number of levels of brightness differentiable in-between. The main question I'm curious here is about color detection/reproduction, the correct ratio between the subpixels, for each frequency of the EM spectrum compared to what would be perceived in person under the exact same lighting conditions; so if you won't be covering both equally (or at all) despite being capable of, then please prioritize the color question.

Help me debunk this statement about chromatic aberration and spectral sensitivity of the human eye

Hi,

I have this text I need to dissect. Please help me criticise/debunk/shred this text into pieces. I really need citations for this though, so we can demonstrate how false these claims are. Thank you in advance! :)

As an amateur, I find the text problematic because it:

  • creates a causational relationship between (and even equates) chromatic aberration and the spectral sensitivity of the human eye – which are two very different phenomena
  • proposes that chromatic aberration (which is a property of a lens) causes a so-called "relative myopia" and "relative farsightedness" – terms I cannot seem to find online.
  • proposes that chromatic aberration actually happens in the eye – but would not that result in us seeing blurred colourful fringes and haloes around objects, just like you can see in a photograph taken by a camera that strongly exhibits chromatic aberration? I can't find a study to support my point though.
  • states that the human eye is most sensitive to the yellow-green wavelength range because this range is most predominant in the Sun's spectrum – but isn't it because the weighted function of the spectral sensitivity of our cones simply lies around 555 nm? Maybe these studies might help, I am not sure [1,2]. They also vaguely state that this yellow-green range has "the most favourable effect on humans" which is confusing, what does that mean? "Favourable" during the night certainly is light devoid of blue and green wavelengths that suppress melatonin secretion, so "favourable" is debatable without being specific.

The text:

When designing lighting, the chromaticity of the light used must be carefully considered. Due to the predominant yellow-green component in sunlight, the human eye is most sensitive to the yellow-green wavelength range and this light also has the most favourable effect on humans. On the contrary, red or blue light of the same intensity is much more difficult to perceive. In the eye, light with a high proportion of blue wavelengths falls in front of the retina, causing so-called relative myopia; on the contrary, light with a high ratio of red wavelengths falls behind the retina and causes relative farsightedness. This phenomenon is also called chromatic aberration (also a chromatic defect or colour defect) and it is necessary to keep in mind when designing the lighting systems or electronic displays.

Color Theory: Why do we use RGB if it doesnt match with spectral sensitivity peaks?

I've been studying color theory for 2 years now, but I'm a little confused about the RGB color model. I know that RGB is the objectively best color model (that uses 3 primaries). I learned that this was because you have three cones in your eyes, the S M and L cones, and each one was sensitive to a different wavelength, corresponding to the wavelengths for blue, green, and red respectively. I learned that because they corresponded to those wavelengths, they'd give us the brightest colors and largest gamut.

...However, I've recently come across the spectral sensitivity chart, which is... making my head hurt. (imagine chidi anagonye from the good place seeing the dot in the 'i'. That's my mood.) In case you aren't aware, this chart visually shows the wavelengths that each cone is receptive to. Here are some examples:

https://preview.redd.it/qyp9y5edg4r51.png?width=287&format=png&auto=webp&s=b5b545e797151234558944eee34926f48330944a

https://preview.redd.it/sp1f9hbfg4r51.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=a1c83fde29d4bd4a0531188bad03deccc83c3cef

What confuses me is that yes, the S cone has the highest sensitivity for blue/violet, and yes, the M cone has the highest sensitivity for green. But the L cone's peak sensitivity is around yellow or yellow/green, not red. Every article I've read about spectral sensitivity confirms this observation.

This discovery is unraveling my knowledge of color theory. Why do people keep saying that the L cone sees red the best? Why do color theory articles perpetuate that lie? Couldn't people just say "blue and red are on the farthest ends of the visible color spectrum, and green is in the middle"? Since it appears that a cone's peak sensitivity doesn't matter to the RGB color model, why can't we use violet instead of blue, since violet is closer to the end of the visible light spectrum, therefore allowing a larger color range/gamut? If the cones' peak sensitivity doesn't really matter to make an ideal color model (otherwise we'd be using blue, green, and yellow-green as primaries), is there any point to using a color model with just 3 colors anymore, since the cones /apparently/ don't really matter? sdafhsdkjfhaskldfhsd? askdfhlasdkjfsdfasf????

TL;DR: Can someone please explain why RGB is the best color model without using the "each cone in your eye corresponds to red, green, or blue" argument? Can someone explain why we don't use purple instead of blue then?

Hello! As the tile says I'm looking for a photodiode with (more or less) constant relative spectral sensitivity. It should be from ~600nm) or less) to ~1200nm (or higher). The price isn't that important, not more than 70 euros/piece would be good. If you need any more information, just ask in the comments. If you guys have an idea if it's possible to get a constant graph with a filter or sth it would be okay aswell.

Prism lens for spectral sensitivity function?

Is anyone aware of a lens that is only a prism to cast a spectrum across the sensor of a camera body?

I'd like to be able to measure the spectral sensitivity functions of camera sensors without investing in an expensive programmable light source.

I am aware of the limitations of this method regarding the definition of the bounds of the projected spectrum, but I think I can accurately create a "best fit" dimensional algorithm to determine which vertical/horizonal array corresponds to which frequency. I only want to be accurate to the 10th nanometer, so I'm not concerned about the sensor bucket array distorting the readings.

I'm developing software to simulate analog film (full simulation, not LUT) and need to be able to profile the sensor accurately, and especially without the characteristics of any given lens on the camera, which excludes more rudimentary profiling like a ColorChecker.

So, if anyone knows if such a thing exists, that would be very helpful to avoid getting an extremely expensive programmable light and spectral photometer setup!

Thanks!

German Space Surveillance Resources

Germany, through its "Deutsches Zentrum fΓΌr Luft- und Raumfahrt" (DLR) German Aerospace Center, is responsible for hosting the European Union Space Surveillance and Tracking Service (EU SST) database and generating an EU SST Catalogue of space objects. While a critical role, as of July 2020, Germany also has a Weltraumkommando der Bundeswehr (WRKdoBw) Space Command managing its own formidable space surveillance resources.

Radar Space Surveillance Resources:

The Fraunhofer Institute for High Frequency Physics and Radar Techniques (Fraunhofer-Institut fΓΌr Hochfrequenzphysik und Radartechnik, FHR), is the developer of two space surveillance radars, TIRA (Tracking and Imaging Radar) and GESTRA (German Experimental Space Surveillance and Tracking Radar) for the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fΓΌr Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR).

TIRA operates at two transmission frequencies, 1.333 GHz L-band and 16.7 GHz Ku-band. It has a huge 34 m aperture, 240 ton, gimbaled Cassegrain dish antenna that would look quite at home on the Death Star, and yet is capable of swinging 24 deg/sec in azimuth and 6 deg/sec in elevation, an agility necessary for tracking objects in LEO.

The narrow-band coherent pulsed (30 Hz PRF) L-band radar is used for precise tracking (3 m positional accuracy at 1000 km) for orbit determination and is capable of detecting a 2 cm sphere at 1000 km. It can operate on its own or provide the tracking required by the wideband Ku-band Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) portion which is capable of better than 20 cm resolution imagery of LEO objects. . A future upgrade is to increase the imaging radar frequency for higher resolution. Sample TIRA ISAR images of the Tiangong-1 space station shortly before reentry are at https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/2018-04-01-173152.jpg and https://cbsnews1.cbsistatic.com/hub/i/2018/03/31/03fef570-f0ab-4816-9da7-3df1b2f163bb/tiangong-ap-18088394762534.jpg .

GESTRA ( https://directory.eoportal.org/web/eoportal/satellite-missions/g/gestra ) is a quasi-monostatic (transmitter and receiver are in separate 18 m x 4 m x 4 m transportable shelters at least 100 m apart to avoid receiver saturation) pulsed phased array L-band (~1.3 GHz) radar for detection and tracking of objects between 300 and 3000 km in altitude. [Excerpt] [Execution Hour] Nurgle and The Emperor playing 100D chess with a Ship Captain, a Plaguebearer, and a Fury Pilot, all to end or save a single Ship.

We always hear about the Emperor and the Chaos Gods playing 100D chess with each other, but we rarely ever see it, so I thought that this would be a great opportunity to actually seeeven one aspect of that 100D Chess in action. __ Context: It’s the Gothic War, also known as the 12th Black Crusade, The Macharius, a Ship within Battlefleet Gothic, and it’s captain, Leoton Semper, took out a ship that was a sister ship to The Virulent, now after meeting The Macharius in battle, and even engaging in some boarding actions to exact revenge upon The Macharius, and failing to destroy it, the Captain of the Virulent, Sirl, has one final trick up his sleeve.

Zane is a Fury Pilot on the Macharius.

>The master of the Virulent turned away from the auspex screen, pleased to see the distant shapes of the Imperial fleet falling away to the rear of his vessel. Accompanying the Virulent were the Pluton, the Pagan Voyager and a handful of surviving escort vessels. The Heathen Promise limped off on a different course heading, offering itselfβ€”Sirl was delighted to seeβ€”as an obvious, alternative target for the wrath of any pursuing enemy ships. Ahead of the fleeing Chaos ships was open space, and the promise of escape into the warp. > >It had been Sirl’s intention to launch a second wave of boarding craft at the Macharius, but, before he could do so, he was beaten off by the marauding beams of the Drachenfels’ deadly accurate lance turrets. Sirl was a loyal servant of the true powers of the warp, but he was no rage-possessed Khornate madman. He had served Grandfather Nurgle for centuries, and fully intended to serve him for centuries more yet. The ways of the Grandfather were slow and methodical, differing from those of the other Chaos powers, but in the end, all things fell to decay and corruption. The Macharius and the Virulent would cross paths again, he knew, and, when they did so, he would have his revenge. >Β  >After all, he mused to himself, had he not already taken steps to ensure that it would be so? >Β  >The Chaos thing shuffled through the darkness, leaving the lights and shouts of the enemy search parties behind it. There had been others like it amongst the boarding assault, it knew, others bearing the captain-champion’s plague gifts, but somehow it sensed that it was the only one to survive this far. >Β  >The cold, metal vaults and passageways of the enemy ship were unfamiliar to it, not at all like those of its own vessel, where the ri

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

IXPE Launch Campaign Thread

r/SpaceX Discusses and Megathreads

#Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) exploits the polarization state of light from astrophysical sources to provide insight into our understanding of X-ray production in objects such as neutron stars and pulsar wind nebulae, as well as stellar and supermassive black holes. Launch has been set for December 9, 2021. Technical and science objectives include:

  • improving polarization sensitivity by two orders of magnitude over the X-ray polarimeter aboard the Orbiting Solar Observatory OSO-8 (scientists see HEASARC: Observatories),
  • providing simultaneous spectral, spatial, and temporal measurements,
  • determining the geometry and the emission mechanism of Active Galactic Nuclei and microquasars,
  • finding the magnetic field configuration in magnetars and determining the magnitude of the field,
  • finding the mechanism for X ray production in pulsars (both isolated and accreting) and the geometry,
  • determining how particles are accelerated in Pulsar Wind Nebulae.

The cost of IXPE will be $188 million, which includes the cost of the launch vehicle and operations and data analysis after launch. The Principal Investigator is Dr. Martin Weisskopf of NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville, AL. Ball Aerospace, Broomfield Colorado, is providing the spacecraft and the services of mission integration. The X-ray polarization detectors will be provided by the Italian Space Agency, Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI). Dr. Brian Ramsey is leading the effort to produce the grazing-incidence X-ray mirrors at NASA/MSFC.

270 Mixing Secrets

I've just finished reading Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio by Mike Senior and it was an incredible read. Highly recommended for everyone. I know that not everybody's going to read it though, and I have made notes while reading it (though I highly recommend it, if only for the amusing prose if not for the huge amount of info that this guide omits), so I thought I'd share the wisdom. This is a bit long, but it might be valuable to some of you.

So here are 270 mixing "secrets" from the book:

How to listen

* Mix at low volume. Listen at different volumes.

* Cut low ends on everything except bass and kick.

* Use spectrum analysis to evaluate the low end.

* Take plenty of rest.

* Switch monitors frequently.

* Compare to good mixes. ALL THE TIME.

* Compare to good mixes - plural. You should have a reference for each aspect of your mix.

* Edit snippets out of the reference tracks, so you can switch quickly to the correct spot.

* Build a reference library, labeled by mix aspect.

How to prepare

* Before mixing, export stems, including midi. Mix in a separate project.

* When possible, do sub-mixes.

* Tracks should have meaningful names and colors.

* Use markers to mark different sections.

* Color sections and ranges of interest if your DAW allows for that.

* Before starting, listen to each track solo. Mark points of interest (problems to hide, gems to bring forward).

* For each track, define the frequency ranges that it would live in.

* Break vocal tracks, lead guitars, bass guitar etc. to different tracks by section as needed. (Multing)

Timing/pitch fixes

* Find the most rythmically tight track, straighten it out as much as possible, make it groove, then use it as a reference for all the other instruments, introducing them one by one, starting with the most rhythmically important, with a focus on maintaining groovitude.

* To judge if an attack is in time, you have to start listening two bars before it hits.

* Double-tracked instruments need their timing adjusted each track soloed at a time.

* Pay special attention to when notes (especially bass notes) end.

* To avoid obvious timing edits, make them:

- On silence.

- On noise.

- Pre-masked.

- Masked by another track (e.g. snare hit).

- In-phase.

* Once timing corrections are done on each track separately, re-listen to the whole arrangement, and move tracks slightly back or forwards to get the exact groove feel you're looking for.

On comping

When I was a single man, I had loads of free time.

Now that I listen to albums, I hardly ever leave the house.

Girlfriend got me good. Never been more proud of her.

Said if she ever hosts a gender reveal party, when it comes time to pop the balloon she'll spray everyone with water.

Gender is fluid.

My 4 year oldest favourit joke, which he very proudly memorized and told all his teachers.

Two muffins are in an oven, one muffin looks at the other and says "is it just me, or is it hot in here?"

Then the other muffin says "AHH, TALKING MUFFIN!!!"

Dropped my best ever dad joke & no one was around to hear it

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

I said "hey look, an escaPEA"

No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!

Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies πŸ˜‚

The modular 256 active element (each module with an individual patch antenna) transmit and receive arrays are mounted on round 2.8 m dia. 3-axis platforms mechanically steered

This Week At Bungie 8/05/2021

Source: https://www.bungie.net/en/News/Article/50519

This week at Bungie, we start shaking up the sandbox.

Welcome to the TWAB. We’ve got a lot to cover today so I’m going to skip the small talk and get into it.

Yesterday, Assistant Game Director and mustache enthusiast Joe Blackburn went out on Twitter and talked about some our upcoming plans regarding Destiny 2 PVP.

>Ahead of the showcase this month, I wanted to take a little time to talk about Destiny PVP. > >β€” Joe Blackburn (@joegoroth) August 4, 2021

Please give the whole thread a read, but for the tl:dr crew, the main thing we want everyone to know is that we have a plan, it's going to take some time, and we are excited about the future of creating a more consistent delivery of PVP content each year.

##The Best of Your Ability

Our teams have been hard at work putting together a lot of changes for next Season. We decided to break out upcoming sandbox changes into three parts. This week we are covering abilities. Next week we will talk about armor and mods, and then we will touch on weapons during the final week before the end of the Season. Here is Combat Gameplay Designer Eric Smith to give you the rundown on how your Guardian’s abilities will be evolving next Season.

> >Eric Smith: Hey, Guardians.Β  We’ve been hard at work on an abilities balance patch for Season 15, but before we get into the balance changes, here’s some info about a quality-of-life change debuting in Season 15:Β  > >###Separate Melee ActionsΒ  > >Have you ever tried to throw a knife at an approaching Screeb, only to instead lunge forward and slap the Screeb in its gross exploding face? Have you ever accidentally wasted your hard-earned melee charge on a sad, lone Dreg? If so, there’s hope. Introducing… separate melee actions!Β Β  > > > > > >Starting next Season, you’ll be able to bind your charged melee attack and your uncharged melee attack to separate inputs, giving you greater control of when you use your abilities. This is an opt-in feature, and these new actions will be unbound by default. When you go to customize your controls, you’ll see the following new entries in the action list:Β Β  > > > > > >Auto-melee is the new name for the melee action that you’re used to. Your melee is context-sensitive and its behavior will change based on your equipped
