A list of puns related to "Spanish Mackerel"
I plan on using a small .7in one around 12-18in above a 1oz diamond jig connected together with 50lb mono. This lets me switch from my usual pompano/whiting rig to something for spanish mackerel/bluefish if there's a blitz.
I want to know if they would be put off by it, I'm using the smallest snap swivel possible so any advice would be appreciated!
From what I understand, both species are fast and acrobatic fish that primarily target small baitfish. They have extremely similar body plans (besides the teeth) and live in the same areas.
Bluefish could be compared to them, but they are a more cold-tolerant species and seem to target larger baitfish species. They also appear to grow much larger, and they fight a lot harder too.
I was just wondering if there were any major differences in their biology or behavior. Thanks!
Iβve caught a few last winter with cut pinfish and rapala twitch baits but thatβs about it.
Makes sense that fish like Whiting or Pompano would seek beach structure to find crustaceans or shelter. But what about pelagic fish like Bluefish or Spanish?
Should I be seeking out structure just as diligently if I'm targeting them or is broadening my search along the beach more important.
Thanks!
There has been a preliminary assessment that was done recently (yet to be peer reviewed) that shows stock for Spanish Mackerel have crashed. The last assessment from 2018 showed the stock was at 30-50% in 2016 however it was recommended for the quota to be maintained or reduced to boost levels to 60% of the unfished biomass.
The new survey changed the metric used to assess the levels and has come up with different biomass estimate of 17%.
I just wanted to see if anyone has any thoughts / opinions / insight.
My sources of information come from DAF media release and 2018 stock assessment
Edit- bad spelling and English :(
