Let's get South Yorkshire moving

Even before the pandemic, South Yorkshire had been left behind. We’ve seen industry and business without sufficient investment, public services ravaged by austerity, and workers on some of the lowest wages in the UK.
I’m Lewis Dagnall and I’m standing for mayor because I want to get South Yorkshire moving.
Passengers before Profit
I will make this election a referendum on fixing the dysfunctional transport system which holds our region back. Expensive, fragmented and unreliable public transport offers little alternative to congested, polluting road traffic. It’s time to recreate a fully integrated, publicly-owned bus and tram system that will provide access to jobs, health and education services, and leisure time anywhere in South Yorkshire.
Taking back control
The root of the problem is privatisation. Our mass transit system, once the best in the country, was forcibly sold off in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The private companies that have taken over operate on the worst model of extractive capitalism – cutting routes, suppressing wages and raising ticket prices, before complaining of declining passenger numbers and high staff turnover. Companies pay out dividends then refuse to invest in a modern fleet and demand public money to meet even minimum standards.
Directing private bus companies to follow a public network through franchising is an important step forward – but it should be the first in putting passengers before profit; we can do far more to take back control of our transport system.
- Immediately begin the process of bus franchising – the legal mechanism allowing the mayor to mandate a network in the public interest.
- Appoint a publicly-owned bus company to take up this franchise.
- Bring Supertram back under a public operator in 2024 and integrate trams and buses into a unified network.
- Run the publicly-owned bus and tram operators with a co-operative management structure, which sees worker- and passenger-nominated directors making key decisions.
Putting people first
By bringing the transport system into direct public ownership, we can put people first. Rather than paying out profits to shareholders, people in South Yorkshire will have a direct say over how they’ll be reinvested into services. Let’s end the vicious cycle of cuts, rising fares and drastica

Detectives investigating the 2007 disappearance of Andrew Gosden have made two arrests.
Assisted by officers from the Metropolitan Police, we detained two London men on Wednesday 8 December.
A 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of kidnap, human trafficking and the possession of indecent images of children, and a 38-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of kidnap and human trafficking. Both have now been released under investigation while enquiries continue.
Andrew Gosden, who would be 28 now, disappeared on 14 September 2007. The then 14-year-old boarded a train from Doncaster to London, with CCTV cameras capturing him when he arrived at Kings Cross station. That was the last known sighting of Andrew, and since then no information about his movements has been corroborated by police.
Senior investigating officer, Detective Inspector Andy Knowles said: “Our priority at this time is supporting Andrew’s family while we work through this new line of enquiry in the investigation. We are in close contact with them and they ask that their privacy is respected as our investigation continues.
“We have made numerous appeals over the years to find out where Andrew is and what happened to him when he disappeared. I would encourage anyone with any information they have not yet reported to come forward."

The bike I want is a Specialized mountain bike. It costs £850 almost 1000€. It is a very nice bike.
However I have this question. In my hometown it’s not that common for bikes to be stolen. I don’t know if that’s the case in the UK though.
