Was buying some items off Craigslist from an elderly couple who happened to have some boxes of books for sale as well. I am curious what sales jobs are out there that would be a good fit for someone with a mechanical engineering background?

I am a 25M living in southwestern Ontario who currently works as a mechanical designer at an OEM company. I graduated with a bachelors in mechanical engineering in 2018. Like most, year two of the pandemic has gotten to me and I am looking for a change in my life, more specifically my career. Design work was something I fell into and honestly don’t mind, I enjoy the problem solving aspect of the work but the politics (may be my office in particular) and 40 hour weeks of SolidWorks have started to get to me. This has left me looking into possible other careers to explore, and after talking with friends I believe that sales may be the answer I am looking for. I believe that I have a well rounded personality and have strong social skills that would allow me to convey technical concepts to someone without technical background.

Now that being said I am not sure where to begin on finding either a product/service I want to sell or a company I want to work for. Ideally the position would be one that would allow me to use my mechanical background to solve a problem for the customer in a larger sense, like a project. I have dealt with sales people at my current job buying small automation equipment like motors, bearings, conveyors, sensors etc and I do not think this interests me. I think that I would like to be a part of a bigger solution or something a bit more hands on and not so transactional if that makes sense. For example, I have one friend with a mechanical engineering degree who went into HVAC sales. The company sells the HVAC for the entire building and hes a part of that sale, he then continues on as the project manager for that job. I love the idea of that, unfortunately I don’t think I have a driving passion for HVAC. Alternatively I have a friend who sells medical instruments for operations and will actually be in the operating room during surgery in case there is any support needed for the equipment. I want to know what other interesting sales roles are out there that would benefit from a mechanical engineering background.

TL;DR What kind of sales jobs are out there for someone with a mechanical engineering background.

Other careers related to Sales Engineering: My 21 year journey as a former SE

I have held a BUNCH of Sales Engineering related roles. A few weeks back, I made a big write up of my work journey in a post asking about careers related to Sales Engineering, I thought the sub might enjoy it. Mine is just one story among many, but here goes:

(TL;DR: read the bold for a role list and the TL;DR section at the bottom)

I have been in Enterprise Software since age 15, starting with IT help-desk in 1998. The majority of my early career was spent as an SE of some sort, but I have held a bunch of other fun roles since then. I started in ERP, then went to Marketing Automation, then to CRM work which was mostly Salesforce. I list the positions below but I have held many IC and Management positions related to pre-sales. I am currently a Salesforce Enterprise Architect which is a fantastic job as an individual contributor with extremely good compensation. I will do this until my kids go to college, then I will return to Management. My 5-10 year plan is to find a role as a Chief Customer Officer at a mid size company (500m-2B).

How did I get all these roles? I volunteered for anything cool or impactful. I made friends and cultivated relationships with people who had interesting jobs. I focused on making relationships OUTSIDE of my regular team. When I was young I would ask for coaching, and when I became more established I would just ask for their opinion on things because I respected their POV and valued their experience. Everyone loves talking about themselves.

My most successful ice breaker was "You seem to have an amazing career, I was wondering if you would take some time to tell me about how you got to where you are". I've never gotten a no to that one.

My Path

  1. Very early in my career I built and maintained demo environments for about 400 SEs worldwide. This was actually pretty fun. I got to work with Product Management, Product Development, Product Marketing, Sales, Sales Enablement and Presales. I also got to play with the Alpha and Beta releases of everything. It was also a very global role with lots of travel. This is a niche role now that most things are SaaS but there are still roles that do 100% demo environment setup out there. This required some basic Software Dev and IT experience but I loved it.
  2. I then spent 10ish years as an SE for a wide variety of products, simply volunteering any time we acquired a new company to go and learn their product suite and teach their people our processes.

Transition From Modeling/Design to Sales Engineering

I’m an EIT with 2.5 years of experience working in transportation design. Since starting at my current position, I’ve worked exclusively in the Bentley suite of products, specifically OpenRoads. I’ve gained a lot of experience early on and feel proficient with the software.

I like my office and am compensated well above average (I think) for my experience level. As well, from conversations with older coworkers, their compensation seem incredible. Some of the benefits are also top tier with no healthcare premiums and a great retirement package. However, some of the company policies have really jaded me, specifically our WFH policy. Nobody ever left the office, even in March 2020. Through covid and even natural disasters we’ve had to come into the office. I tested positive months ago, I was asymptomatic and had a moral dilemma of wanting to just not report it and go into the office as usual instead of draining my sick and vacation time. My thinking is if COVID didn’t do it, there will never be a catalyst for my firm to transition to any kind of hybrid setup. I’m not sure if I want to commit long term to that. I’ve vocalized to my manager that these policies (or lack there of) will ultimately hurt retention, but corporate seems set in their ways.

All of this being said, I’m not sure I even want to work in roadway design forever, or even civil engineering design. I like the idea of traveling for work and also having the capability to work remotely. I’ve seen job postings for sales positions with Bentley that have piqued my interest. It seems this position would value somebody in my situation who has modeling experience but wants to transition out of design/project management. Is there anyone here who works in civil software sales? Or has made a similar transition? Any advice or input is appreciated. Thanks for listening to my rant.

32 year old female wanting to break into engineering after 4 years in sales

I’ve been in financial technology sales for 4 years - I enjoy the dialogue that comes along with speaking to CFOs, Controllers and Treasurers but our comp plan is changing and I need an out. I’ve worked with engineers and data scientists over the years to give them β€œinsight” into our platform from a user experience perspective and ways to improve our data. With the comp change coming I see a lucrative/stable career in engineering but am overwhelmed at figuring out how to transition or what the best path forward. I’d like to be out of sales in 8-12 months. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Graduating in May, how do I get into sales engineering?

I am a senior in ME with a minor in international business. I honestly have never thought about sales engineering until 2 months ago after I realized how bored I am in engineering. I have worked 3 internships so far and I can say I am very bored. It doesn't seem challenging to me. Maybe I have just had shitty internships. During 3/4 years of my college experience, I worked full time as an operations manager at FedEx (I was 18 when hired). I loved the pressure and the competitive factor it brought however while it was challenging physically it didn't challenge me mentally.

Anyways, I decided to pursue sales engineering because of a couple of factors. Money competition and I know I am not the next Elon Musk so I'll be a pretty average engineer.. I just don't know how to do it. I had 4 interviews totaling 9 hours with a company for a sales eng rep job starting in June 2022. After the final round, they said I didn't have the skills in sales because I had no experience in sales.

I will sell my left nut to get a base salary and commission in something that's tech-related. What steps can I take to get into a sales eng role with no experience? Or gain the credentials to qualify for a sales engineering role? Thanks in advance!

Conceptualizing the Pre-Sales Engineering Role

I may have an opportunity to build out a pre-sales engineering team at a startup. I have a couple years of SE experience with one company, so I understand what my specific roles and responsibilities are.

But, in approaching this "blank slate" opportunity, I'm trying to conceptualize pre-sales engineering from a more.. essentialist perspective. Here are some ideas so far, would be interested in getting feedback:

  1. Accelerate the sales cycle - core function of the SE, with particular focus on needs assessment, product presentation and objection handling.
  2. Conserve cycles of platform and delivery engineers - serve as single touchpoint for customer technical matters, filter and prioritize questions/requests to non-sales engineers.
  3. Act as customer advocate with internal stakeholders - represent customer concerns in internal engineering/product discussions

What am I missing here?

Can I enter the field of Sales Engineering with Biomedical focus if I hold a Bachelors in Biology and substantial experience as a Salesperson?

I'm graduating in Winter 2022 with a B.A in Biology. I started off with wanting to become a physician, but I realized way too late in the game that the sacrifices I would have to make come at far too great of a cost. I've always wanted to join the field of Biotechnology/Bioengineering, but I was dead set on becoming a physician. It may have been due to the influence of my family, but I don't really know.

After rejecting my original plan, I was at a loss when it came to what I wanted to do. I started working a while back at a local electronics repair shop as both a technician and a salesperson. After working for a while, I realized that I not only had a knack for sales , but I also enjoyed it a lot.

That got me thinking: What if I choose a career in the Biotechnology/Bioengineering field where I am a salesperson? The two closest things I could think of were "Sales Engineering."

That brings me to my main question: Can I become a Sales Engineer focusing on Biology if I have decent experience working as a salesman? If it's not possible to jump straight to Sales Engineering, would it be possible to do so after working as a Medical Sales Representative?

Banned from New World Due to Advertising my Engineering Tools for Sale

Yesterday I spent a while trying to sell my Orichalcum tools, I was reported multiple times simply because I had TTV in my name, they tried recruiting people to report me so that I would "Appeal my ban on steam". I worked hard to get 150 Engineering and 200 Mining, I put tools up for sale on the Market, and then proceeded to sell a specific set of tools in Global chat because they had Luck/Yield on them, which made them valuable.

I was mass reported because of trying to sell tools to people in Global chat (there is no trade chat yet). Every MMO allows you to advertise the sale of your weapons/goods through a chat. The majority of people used Global to advertise, I joined in and was banned. They PM'd me several times harassing me and making fun of me because of having TTV in my name. I didn't care what they had to say, I just wanted to sell my tools. But they banded together to punish me.

I recall there being a post on Reddit about "Ignore the posts regarding bans because most of them are cheaters". I somewhat agreed with this statement before this happened, and now I realize mass-reporting is becoming a trend to screw people over. It happens during wars as well to get rid of opposing players. Any help would be appreciated, I submitted my appeal at 4am, its 1:23 PM now and no response.

If they don't unban me I quit. I put a lot of effort into this character.

TL;DR

I was banned for using Global as trade chat, people hated me for having TTV in my name.

Best sales engineering workshops/demo courses - especially in SF

Hey!

I’ve talked to my work about moving into a more sales engineering role and their one concern is that I haven’t given technical demos before. they’re willing to spend some money on professional development training. If I Google stuff, obviously I get some hits, but I was wondering if anyone could recommend some short classes or weekend intensives where I could learn demo skills. I’m based in SF so an in person local workshop is preferred, but online is also great.

Leaving graduate design engineering role for technical sales engineer role

I've only been in this job for 9 months with this boat manufacturer. I enjoy design work - however I don't see growth within the company as the engineering team is tiny. We are essentially 3D designers and not really "engineering" new products. We don't have a lot of resources to play with either

I have been interviewed for the mentioned sales engineering role as I was referred to them by my university's racing team. I feel it is an attractive opportunity with a pay increase and some more challenges. However, I'm not sure what to do: It does come with a pay increase in an interesting industry but I'm not sure if this will pigeonhole me forever into a non-technical role. Plus, I would potentially be leaving part way through a project.

If people have gone through something similar early in their career I would love to hear it!

> Indian police have arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with an app that shared photos of more than 100 Muslim women saying they were on "Sale".

> In July last year, an app and website called "Sulli Deals" created profiles of more than 80 Muslim women - using photos they uploaded online - and described them as "Deals of the day".

> When news of the Bulli Bai app broke, poet Nabiya Khan who was targeted in the Sulli deals case, tweeted that the Delhi Police had yet to take action on her complaint in 2021.Police in at least three states have opened an investigation into the Bulli Bai app based on complaints by women who were targeted.

> The list of women on the Bulli Bai app included a Bollywood actor and the 65-year-old mother of a disappeared Indian student.

> Quratulain Rehbar, a Kashmiri journalist, who had reported on the Sulli deals last year, said it felt disgusting to be named in the app this time.

> She told ANI news agency that the new app was created because the makers of Sulli deals hadn't been punished yet.

~200K OTE turned into 120K after I signed... only 4 years of experience, but I want out. Engineering background, want to stay in sales/strategy. Next step???

So I got my current gig with 3 years work experience. Advertised as a blended AE/BDR role of a technical product. Own full sales cycle. It required an engineering degree (Electrical, chemical, or mechanical) and wanted 1-3 years work experience. Advertised pay range was 70k base/140k OTE at the low end to 85k base/160k OTE at the high end. I got the offer, negotiated, and finished with a package of 92k base/184k OTE. With 401k match, my base is ~98k, and OTE (supposedly) at 196k. I was pretty happy with this.

They took a while to tell us our comp structures after we were hired, and when they finally did (only a couple of months in but still), it turned out that the 195k wasn't an OTE at all but rather a CAP. Instead, my real OTE, based on territory and opps available, would be closer to 120k.

I signed back when I was living in Silicon Valley and working out of San Francisco. My last company was in AI SaaS. Nothing fancy, but AI SaaS nonetheless. I made 80k OTE (met quota) straight out of college, and then 120k OTE 4 months after i initially got hired since I got promoted real quick (also met quota.) I've been over-quota my whole career until this job.

Seeing as how I was already OTE'ing 120k 4 months into my first job FOUR YEARS ago, I feel I'm totally getting ripped off getting only 120k now. For more background, they hired 2 more people in my position along me at the same time, and it seemed the company wasn't sure how much opps we were actually going to be able to close. Truthfully, if I magically closed 2M in sales from now til New Year's Eve, I would get my 200k but that's not going to happen as the opps just aren't there. I would have never signed for 120k.

So now I want to quit but I'm faced with:

CONS
- only 4 years work experience total
- only 1 mayyyyybe 2 years "closing" experience
- deal sizes in the 6-digits but not 7-digits yet
- just young and green in general

PROS
- over-quota all 4 years
- experience in SaaS
- background in engineering (though not software), degree from MIT
- few engagements here and there for street cred (speaker at industry conferences, hackathons, etc)

Ideally: I'd like to stay in sales, definitely in tech, with a cool product in AI, ML or IOT, though flexible on product. I'd also like to join either a huge company like Google, or a rising start-up where I could get not only RSUs but also the opportunity to move UP in the sales org. I had a little bit of exposure to strategy at my old BD

How to break into sales engineering?

Hi, folks. My apologies if this question has been asked here before - I'm sure it has, but my search of the phrase didn't yield any results. I'm currently a tier 3 field technician with 3.5 years of IT technical support and server administration under my belt. I have a bachelor's degree in ICT and prior to my IT experience, I worked in retail sales for 5 years. I'm just wondering how to get my foot in the door w/sales engineering.

I think it would be a good career fit because I really enjoy interfacing with clients - building and maintaining those relationships is something I really enjoy in my current role and would like to do more of that. I love the technical side as well, but field/desktop support isn't what I want to do forever and server administration is great but I like the idea of designing solutions for different customers and projects. TL:DR; I like variety.

Just not entirely sure how to go about getting into this field. I've been looking at job openings, but many ask for established technical sales experience, which is not something I have. Do you guys have any advice?

Thank you in advance!

Career Shift to Sales Engineering

Good day everyone. I am currently working as an Environmental Engineer for a Japanese company. Before I took this job, I had a JO for a Sales Engineer. Now, I am thinking of the what-ifs that may have happened if I took it.

For those in the Sales Engineer job, is there financial improvement that comes with it versus the conventional engineering career path? How is your career progression? I took the Environmental Engineer JO because of the potential career growth that comes with it but my personality is more inclined in dealing with people than in engineering.

If ever I can no longer swallow what I am doing as an Environmental Engineer, I am planning to shift to Sales Engineering and re-contact the Executives of the company that hired me and send a unsolicited job application hahaha since I have their emails. I would appreciate your insights and experiences. Thank you.

Sales to Sales Engineering?

I’ve seen some posts on sales burnout but wanted to gather some more specific thoughts from the larger set of minds we have here.

I’ve been in B2B sales since 2012. Started as an SDR at a start up, led that team, became an SDR at another startup, then led that team, then moved into an AE role at a F500 company (last 5 years).

I’ve been in this role where I sell both to existing customers and new customers and more recently have been focusing on up-selling existing enterprise customers the last two years.

Last year I made ~$200k and expect to again this year.

Problem is I’m pretty over having a quota and having to constantly be worried about hitting it. One of my issues is you’re only as good as your last month/quarter/year and I feel as if there is more to be desired out of a role than just prospecting, discovery, negotiation, close.

I’m curious to hear if anyone here has gone from Sales to Sales Engineering and what they think are the pros/cons.

The way I see it is unless you blow out your number as an AE, the SE role typically is paid pretty similarly. Perhaps less autonomy but the pro is no quota and you don’t have to prospect.

Also considering moving into sales management as I see it fulfilling the part of me that wants to do more than just selling but I understand there’s a quota still and first line management isn’t easy.

Would love to hear some experiences and thoughts.

Can I get into Sales Engineering with a B.A in Biology?

I'm graduating in Winter 2022 with a B.A in Biology. I started off with wanting to become a physician, but I realized way too late in the game that the sacrifices I would have to make come at far too great of a cost. I've always wanted to join the field of Bioengineering/Biotechnology, but I was dead set on being a doctor.

After rejecting my original plan, I was at a loss when it came to what I wanted to do. Recently, right around September I started working at a local electronics repair shop as both a technician and a salesperson. After working for a while, I realized that I not only had a knack for sales, but I also enjoyed it a lot.

What do you think of transitioning from technical sales (solutions/sales engineering) to a less technical customer success role?

I wasn't considering this role at all, but I have been hit with some offers to join startup customer success teams and the pay is incredible. I come from a technical solutions/sales engineer background so I feel like a less technical role would not look good and I would reach the point of no return.

What has been your experience with these teams or customer success roles within your organization? Why do they pay so much? What is it like to work in this position at a startup?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
