Google synopsis:
A highly skilled jewel thief, Frank (James Caan) longs to leave his dangerous trade and settle down with his girlfriend, Jessie (Tuesday Weld). Eager to make one last big score in order to begin living a legitimate life, Frank reluctantly associates with Leo (Robert Prosky), a powerful gangster. Unfortunately for Frank, Leo wants to keep him in his employ, resulting in a tense showdown when he finally tries to give up his criminal activities once and for all.
My thoughts:
Well, I'm not sure how much I really liked this one overall, but there are some hints at really quality cinema here. I liked the ideas presented here, but on the whole though, it falls pretty flat for me. (Flopping around like a fish may be more accurate...)
So yeah, this is a 'gritty' crime drama about a serial bank robber who wants to get out after getting in good with the big boss and scoring his first big heist. Obviously, things turn sour.
I probably wouldn't have had too much of a problem here, the story is intriguing, but all the characters just seemed super nieve and unbelievable. I mean, you really think this guy is going to just let you walk away? No, he's going to kill you and your whole dreamed up family. Oh, you want to randomly marry this creepy abusive stalker guy that just moments ago dragged you out of a bar and berated, abused and belittled you? Yikes! On top of this, all the male characters, except Jim Belushi's or Willie Nelson's characters, are just straight slime-bally, unsympathetic pieces of shit. Maybe it's just a different era thing...
Positives:
The music is definitely a highlight here, done by Tangerine Dream, but honestly, I feel like they've done better. It's still well above par though, and lifts the film up significantly.
The main bank heist is also really fun to watch. I just wish this was more of the movie!
The bad:
The editing is subpar, and there are some really strange jumps in locale, time and continuity.
The emotional impact of the film is sterile and void of impact. Really the whole 'I want to build a family and give up the game' thing feels super forced.
The special effects, especially around people getting shot are bad, and the acting at these parts are pitifully la

I'm also looking for quality update (HD versions specifically) for:
I've been a big fan of Michael Mann's work ever since I was a pre-teen/teenager, especially of stuff like Heat and Collateral. So, I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that his directorial debut, Thief, was in the collection. I finally got around to watching it today on HBO Max.
I honestly really loved this movie. James Caan's performance was really great, and he brought a real coolness to the role. I especially love his monologue to Tuesday Wald in the diner about his time in prison. Also liked Robert Prosky as Leo, especially in the scene where he basically tells Frank he permanently works for him and will destroy everything he cares for if he tries to leave. Which is quite a turn after seeing how open and affable he was before. But what a role surprised me was Willie Nelson as Okla. He was pretty good despite only appearing in about two scenes.
The movie also has a lot of style, which is one of Michael Mann's strengths as a director. A lot of the night time scenes remind me of stuff you'd later see in Heat or Collateral, or would influence movies like Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive. There's a lot of shots and sequences I loved, especially in the beginning where it showed Frank doing his work.
And the cherry on top of this sundae would be the score by Tangerine Dream. I'm a fan of synth/electronic scores, and the stuff that Tangerine Dream did here was mesmerizing and added to the mood and atmosphere of some scenes. I even listened to the score while writing this post, and makes me want to check out the scores they did for other movies.
I'm definitely picking up the Criterion of Thief and adding to my collection ASAP. This was an awesome movie, and a great debut from Mann.
The Keep was a 1983 supernatural horror movie directed by Michael Mann (of Heat, Collateral and Miami Vice fame). Which starred Gabriel Byrne, Ian McKellen, Scott Glenn, Jurgen Prochnow and Robert Prosky among others. Based on the book of the same name by F. Paul Wilson. It tells the story of a small detachment of German soldiers arriving in a small Romanian village in the Carpathian mountains during World War II. They take refuge in a citadel with silver crosses plastered all over. One night, two Germans steal one of the crosses where unbeknownst to them unleash something hidden behind the walls of this ancient citadel.
It had a very rough production whilst most of the filming took place at an abandoned quarry in Wales acting as the village during the autumn of 1982 lasting 13 weeks. Not even including 22 weeks worth of reshoots.
There's a lot of scenes that weren't in the film. Which would've had more character development and less errors than there were in the final film. As it was rumored to have been over three and a half hours long around 210 minutes. When Mann presented the cut to the Paramount execs in which they became completely upset. And it was cut down to two hours, yet it test screened very badly then was ultimately cut down to around 95 minutes.
Here's a list of scenes cut:

Go post NSFW jokes somewhere else. If I can't tell my kids this joke, then it is not a DAD JOKE.
If you feel it's appropriate to share NSFW jokes with your kids, that's on you. But a real, true dad joke should work for anyone's kid.
Mods... If you exist... Please, stop this madness. Rule #6 should simply not allow NSFW or (wtf) NSFL tags. Also, remember that MINORS browse this subreddit too? Why put that in rule #6, then allow NSFW???
Please consider changing rule #6. I love this sub, but the recent influx of NSFW tagged posts that get all the upvotes, just seem wrong when there are good solid DAD jokes being overlooked because of them.
Thank you,
A Dad.

Keep in mind, my son is 4 years old, so everything is an original to him.
I had to work late into the evening yesterday, and he was just going to bed when I got home. I had left home for the office nearly 14 hours prior, had a long day, lots of meetings, traffic, etc.
When I walked through the door, I was exhausted, run down, and starving. My wife hugged me and asked how my day was, and I replied, "Done. It was a good day, but has got me exhausted. I just want to grab a bite and go to bed. I'm hungry."
From my son's bedroom, I hear him shout, "Hi Hungry! Nice to meet you!"
Not only did it make me laugh, but I completely forgot about how hungry and tired I was. I went to his bedroom, and we laughed together about it. It was exactly what I needed.
Edit: Thanks for all the awards, kind strangers! I'll let my son know y'all enjoyed his joke too!
I heard parents named their children lance a lot.

Was trying to recall an older male actor active from at least the 80s through even the 2000s maybe? I can see his face but I have no idea what his name is and canβt recall what movie he was in. I feel like he might have been in some movies I watched as a kid in the 80s/90s.
In the same vein as Wilford Brimley or Ed Asner, but not those two. Older male, white hair, grandfatherly. Shorter and a little stout.
Who it is NOT:
Wilford Brimley
Ed Asner
Jason Robards
Burgess Meredith
Christopher Plummer
Hume Cronyn
Richard Attenborough
George Burns
I canβt for the life of me figure it out.
SOLVED! ANSWER: ROBERT PROSKY.
Old Neeeeiiiiighvy

I Thank ye kind Matey for the booty! I be truly overwhelmed! Thank you!
Holy cow! Thank you everyone for the upvotes and awards! I wasnβt expecting this!
He should have a good vowel movement. His next diaper change could spell disaster though.
Solved!
LAST EDIT- Thanks to u/hubgat for the answer- the actor is Martin Mull and heβs the principal in Sabrina the Teenage Witch but also other famous things.
THANK YOU REDDIT AND HAVE A WONDERFUL AND SAFE WEEKEND.
Saw a dude that reminded me of this actor and I cannot figure out who it is.
The closest I came to searching images was he sort of looks like Richard Attenborough as John Hammond from Jurassic park.
The actor usually seems to play an angry/impatient/better-than-you kind of dude.
Probably on TV shows but could also be in movies.
Edit: In similar posts, Donald Sutherland and Rob Reiner were suggested - these are close but still NOT the person I'm thinking of.
Edit 2: I explained this to my husband and he said he could picture him saying "No, no, no - I said..." like in a slow, deliberate way. (not John Malkovich though). When he said this, I could also picture the actor saying that, but I'm not sure how much that helps over text and without inflection. But neither of us can come up with the person still.
Edit 3: Rade Serbedzija is about the closest in looks that we've come so far.
Edit 4: in case it helps- I feel like heβs semi-recent, like maybe in 90s-2000s stuff. And his beard is well-manicured, and straight.
Edit 5: It seems like we can picture the actor in a scene with kids, where he is an authority figure of some sort. (Not Mr. Feeny)
Edit 6: I can picture him having a sort of pretentious tone- like impatient and rolling his eyes (but through his voice) towards others.
Edit 7: The more I think about it, I'm quite certain he's a TV actor, and that he's more in the 2000-2010 range of shows. Possibly a peppery beard versus full white, and shorter in length. Not a signature voice, but one that does seem arrogant or exasperated.
Edit 8: Possibly using "old" is a misleading term. From my age-perspective, I was thinking "old" but I should have been more clear. Someone who, in the series I'm picturing (I think), is around mid-50's-60's in age. Average build/height
Edit 9: were pretty sure heβs more of a side character. Not a main character. Possibly a professor??
Here's who it is NOT:

Brian Cox
Jonathan Banks
Colin Fox
Terence Stamp
Malcolm McDowell
David Ogden Stiers
