Singers whose voices you love but whose singing you hate? And vice-versa?

As a singer and opera freak, I came to the realization many years ago that there were singers whose voices I loved, but whose singing IMO wasn't technically up to par. I also realized that there were singers whose voices I hated, but whose singing I technically admired.

Singers whose voices I love but whose singing I hate: Jessye Norman, Renata Tebaldi, Anna Moffo, Placido Domingo, Tito Gobbi, Grace Bumbry as soprano, Jon Vickers, Aprile Millo

Singers whose singing I love but whose voices I hate: Marilyn Horne, John Alexander, Roberta Peters, June Anderson, Boris Christoff, Sherrill Milnes, Frederica von Stade, James McCracken

Singers whose voices and singing I hate: Renee Fleming, Anna Netrebko, Ermanno Mauro, Adelaide Negri, Hildegarde Behrens, Bernd Aldenhoff, Jess Thomas

Singers whose voices and singing I love: Kirsten Flagstad, Leontyne Price, Luciano Pavarotti, Renato Bruson, Leonard Warren, Carlo Bergonzi, Lauritz Melchior, Pilar Lorengar, Edita Gruberova, Jose Carreras pre 1983, Shirley Verrett, Eileen Farrell, Alfredo Kraus

Singers I never really got despite great voices and great singing: Kiri Te Kanawa, Mirella Freni, Mariella Devia

Singers I love despite questionable singing and/or voices: Leonie Rysanek, Teresa Stratas, Martha Moedl, Gwyneth Jones

Opera Of the day week 27: A Celebration of Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires

For many opera fans, in the USA at least, the name Teatro Colon de Buenos Aires brings images of Maria Callas as Turandot, but not much else. This is a shame because the company has enjoyed a rich history of 165 years. The current theater opened in 1908 and has continuously operated at a high level for all of that history.

In their annals, you will find artists of the caliber of Arturo Toscanini, Luisa Tetrazzini, Enrico Caruso, Conchita Supervia, Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein, Renata Tebaldi, Leontyne Price, PlÑcido Domingo, José Carreras, Luciano Pavarotti, Lily Pons, Regine Crespin, Fritz Wunderlich, Birgit Nilsson, Deborah Voigt, Victoria de los Ángeles, Reri Grist, Montserrat Caballé (you must listen to her debut as Liu), Kiri Te Kanawa, Sena Jurinac (who got to sing the Marschallin there instead of her usual role of Octavian), Pilar Lorengar, Gabriel Bacquier, Richard Tucker and Beverly Sills. We are not talking about a minor theater but one of the most important theaters in the world, on par with Covent Garden and the Met.

This week I have chosen to pay hommage to the la Scala of the Southern hemisphere and hopefully bring attention to this theater and inspire you guys to seek recordings from their archives wherever you buy/download your operas from.

For this Hommage, I have selected the following operas:

  1. Monday 1/21/22: Rusalka (Dvorak) with Anna Maria Martinez, Dmitry Golovnin and Elizabeth Cannis conducted by Julian Kuerti
  2. Tuesday 1/25/22: Don Pasquale (Donizetti) with Nicola Uliveri, Dario Solari, Jaquelina Livieri and Santiago Ballerini conducted by Srba Dicic
  3. Wednesday 1/26/22: Ariadne Auf Naxos (Strauss) with Carla Filipcic Holm, Jennifer Holloway, Ekaterina Lekhina and Gustavo Lopez Manzitti conducted by Alejo Perez
  4. Thursday 1/27/22: Norma (Bellini) with Anna Pirozzi, Annalisa Stroppa, Hector Sandoval conducted by Renato Palumbo
  5. Friday 1/28/22: L'Italiana in Algeri (Rossini) with Florencia machado, Santiago Ballerini and Ricardo Seuel conducted by Antonello Allemandi
  6. Saturday 1/29/22 Tales of Hoffman (Offenbach) with Ramon Vargas, Sophie Koch Rachel Gilmore, Ruben Amoretti and about a million more people conducted by Enrique Arturo Diemecke
  7. Sunday 1/30/22: La Boheme (Puccini) with Mariana ortiz, Jaquelina Livieri, Atalla Ayan and Fabian Veloz conducted by Joseph Colaneri

Note: All operas will have Spanish subtitles only

Hope you guys tune in.

Which great opera singers are overrated in your opinion?

Which great singers do you think are overrated?

I have a few examples

  • Nicolai Gedda: Likeable fellow, could sing a high D, and a lot of repertoire, but the timbre is very ugly, and his voice got 'old' pretty quick.
  • Renata Tebaldi: Huge voice, nice timbre, but she can't act with her voice at all. It's never really interesting.
  • Jon Vickers: Intellectual and interesting human being, but he was basically a baritone. On video recordings, he over-acts a lot.
  • Giacomo Lauri-Volpi: Briliant high notes, nice timbre. But he had no homogenity in his voice except any of his recordings except a few good examples between 1928 and 1933. Crowd pleaser.
  • Fritz Wunderlich: nice timbre, almost one of the most beautiful voices. But I don't find any emotions or vocal acting, shading and so forth.
  • Giulietta Simionato: I understand why people like her, and she is certainly exciting, but compared to Stignani, Barbieri and other mezzos of her generation, I think she is a bit lacking.

What's your picks?

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Just because it's a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke

Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT NSFW, THIS IS ABOUT LONG JOKES, BLONDE JOKES, SEXUAL JOKES, KNOCK KNOCK JOKES, POLITICAL JOKES, ETC BEING POSTED IN A DAD JOKE SUB

Try telling these sexual jokes that get posted here, to your kid and see how your spouse likes it.. if that goes well, Try telling one of your friends kid about your sex life being like Coca cola, first it was normal, than light and now zero , and see if the parents are OK with you telling their kid the "dad joke"

I'm not even referencing the NSFW, I'm saying Dad jokes are corny, and sometimes painful, not sexual

So check out r/jokes for all types of jokes

r/unclejokes for dirty jokes

r/3amjokes for real weird and alot of OC

r/cleandadjokes If your really sick of seeing not dad jokes in r/dadjokes

Punchline !

Edit: this is not a post about NSFW , This is about jokes, knock knock jokes, blonde jokes, political jokes etc being posted in a dad joke sub

Edit 2: don't touch the thermostat
