This January 13th, Prime Minister Alim Khalil asked President Rafid Abadin to hold a snap election. Only hours after the initial announcement, the President announced that he would call for a snap election as asked. Many see this as a political power grab by the current majority party Awami League in the aftermath of recent expansions of the BITCH Act of 2017, which was met with widespread support by the public.
Awami League has been losing ground to the New Jatiya Party in recent elections, now only holding a slight majority with 194 out of 350 seats. The New Jatiya party has released many statements indicating that they believe that they will soon assume the majority in parliament. When asked for comment however, Opposition Leader Omar Munshi stated that the snap election was "politically charged [and] an attempt to deprive legitimately elected officials of their term" and "An affront to democracy".
Speaker of Parliament Julia Nahmud could not be reached for comment.
The elections will be held on February 16th of this year.
A teenage cricketer by the name Emmon has created t20 domestic history in Bangladesh by scoring a ton of just 42 balls of a decent bowling attack. This knock is quite great, considering the fact that this kid has broken the great Tamim Iqbal record of 50 balls. He hit 9 fours & 7 sixes, mostly straight. Something that Bangladesh would celebrate. Good luck to this boy to make it to the Bangladesh team in the near future. A very healthy sign for Bangladesh cricket, going forward.
