I want you to be honest with me, you didn't expect to see Wagner in a Riccardo Muti week, right? Muti has a weird reputation in the opera community, he's often regarded as the Verdi guy or the Italian opera guy. While it's true that Muti has invested a lot of his life reviving and respecting Italian composers, his repertoire is very wide and he excels at almost anything. His Mozart is amazing, his Tchaikovsky is brilliant, his Beethoven is respectable and so on. His Wagner is no exception, in fact, he was the one that made everything happen for Der Ring to return to La Scala after more than 20 years.
This production is not too special and the singers, in my opinion, are not that good, bar Waltraud Meier; but, the focus on this is Muti's exciting conducting of Wagner's music. As Donizetti last week, this recording is somewhat rare. While Muti conducted his few amount of Wagner operas in his career, there weren't many recordings, so it's a good chance to see it today.
