New Generation Small Arms (NGSA)

The M3 Rifle and its derivative M4 SAW and M5 carbine have served the US Armed Forces well since adoption. However, developments in small arms have shown that the technology is slowly becoming out of date. Futuristic and ambitious programs such as SPIW have proven to be disappointing. What has been promising however has been a design by one Eugene Stoner. The revolutionary use of composites and plastics and its design, its clean lines and light weight have impressed ordnance and trials units, as well as the simplicity, in terms of moving parts, of its operating mechanism.

Each branch of the armed forces has sent representatives to conduct joint trials for adoption of a new service rifle under the New Generation Small Arms (NGSA) program, focusing mainly on three different designs by the innovative designer Eugene Stoner, namely the AR-10, AR-18 and Stoner 63. After extensive troops trials, the final conclusion was that all the designs proposed had merit, but that a compromise between existing designs would be the best way forward for the general military. As such, the DoD has requested that Armalite and Stoner mate the AR-18’s magnificent short-stroke gas piston system with the elegant lines and innovative manufacturing of the AR-10. The new compromise proposal, designated XM18, will weigh approximately 7.3lb empty, a saving of approximately 1lb from the previous M3. A number of features will be requested to be included, namely

• A chrome-lined chamber for ease of maintenance and corrosion resistance

• A modified ambidextrous charging handle set in the rear of the upper receiver

• A side-mounted carrying handle

• A railed top receiver for mounting optical sighting systems

• A forward assist system

• Magazine interchangeability with the M3 family

In addition to the standard 20” barrel M18 rifle, there will also be the M19 SAW variant with a bipod, foregrip and heavier profile barrel, and mostly issued with 30rd magazines (though the magazines will be compatible across all members of the family) the M20 with a shorter 15.7” barrel for airborne and air assault units, and an even shorter-barreled M21 Compact Carbine with a 12-inch barrel. The weapons are expected to begin fielding in 1963, with re-arming of the combat forces complete by 1967, and of the entire armed forces by 1971

I saw a handful of sidewalks buckled today. Canada broke two national heat records this week, both in the village of Lytton, BC; 46C on Sunday and 47.5C on Monday. Hottest temps ever recorded in Canada.

Veterinarians are reporting huge numbers of pets being admitted for heatstroke and related medical emergencies.

Climate experts estimated that under normal conditions, weather this hot would happen once in almost 5,000 years, and it is happening now for a week straight.

Many homes have no AC, including nursing and elderly care homes.

I'm in southern BC, Canada, and if you haven't heard, we just had a storm that broke 100+-year records for amount of rain in 24 hours. This resulted in multiple cities being cut off from all road access to the rest of the province (including Vancouver, with over 2 million people, and Victoria, the capital), and at least two cities/towns having to be fully evacuated on very short notice (Merritt and Princeton).

During all of this, I was working from home and lost power and cable Internet at my house. Normally no big deal; I have enough battery power to last at least a full work day, and fuel to recharge them -- but then the cellular network also went down.

I drove to campus, and on the way, all of the surrounding areas also lost power and I got the "switching to generator power" alerts from the datacentre (apparently SMS still worked once I got out of my neighbourhood). The campus is a former military installation that has its own electrical circuit from the utility; it's usually up when all the surrounding areas are dark, so while we have generators, it's rare for them to be in use outside of planned maintenance and disaster drills.

Our fibre connections to the outside world stayed up, and I was able to get back online. From there I carried on and helped keep an eye on things. Aside from connection speed between us and our alternate city backup dropping to a third of normal, and one low-lying building getting partly flooded, we were surprisingly unaffected.

I watched as the news and reddit reported the main highway being swamped by a brand new river and waterfall (which then began rapidly eroding it), and then the backup road out of town became a lake. (This morning, another part of the backup route was severed by a newly formed sinkhole.) Some banks started having problems with payment and deposit/withdrawal processing; they were being cagey about it, but early reports were that a mudslide had taken out a major fibre line.

This morning I got more details about that fibre cut, and here it is, the reason for my post:

It wasn't just one fibre line, but five separate ones, running along at least three widely geographically separated paths (with hundreds of miles between them) that were severed by separate but close to simultaneous landslides. The areas around the cuts are still too unstable to access and repair, so it will be a while.
