i know, a very weird question. i thought the answer was yes until, i played a few commander rounds with my brother. i played a removal spell that said something on the lines of destroy target creature and I tried to target his legendary creature but he said something like It had to specifically say a legendary creature or permanent to destroy it. his reasoning was it has a super type of Legendary so it wasnβt just a creature therefore it canβt be destroyed by that removal spell. is this a rule?
We all want the Nephilim to be Legendary or a Legendary [[Uncle Istvan]], but what's your personal pick for promotion? What non-legendary creature card's flavor, effects, or lore make you wish it could be your Commander?
My pick is [[Docent of Perfection]]. Started playing around Innistrad so [[Delver of Secrets]] has a place, for better or worse, in my heart. I think it's a shame they're not legendary as the final chapter to Delver's story. Card wise I think it is decently powerful and would make a unique transforming commander. Has a lot of directions to take a deck too; Wizard tribal, Flying tribal, spellslinger, tokens. Putting all 3 stages of Delver in the deck and trying to get them all transformed together would make for a fun mini-game. [[Abberant Researcher]] just to get all three on fetcher.
So that's my choice, What's yours?
Can be from any perspective. It sounds the coolest, it has lore significance, etc. Personally, I've always loved Kozilek, Butcher of Truth, if sounds so appropriate to what Eldrazi do. I would love to hear yours!
Hi everyone, Iβm LΓΊthien! This might be an odd question, but Iβm going to have a pretty huge surgery in the coming months to help my legs, and Iβll be at the hospital or at my parentsβ house for a while recovering afterwards. I play Commander because I love the idea of having creatures that can lead a game help you win.
I get pretty attached to my cards and I like having my decks nearby so I can go through my cards and think, βYeah, I have Ghired here and all of my other creatures, theyβve got my back!β
I have two Commanders β [[Ghired, Conclave Exile]] and [[Galea, Kindler of Hope]], as well as cards like [[Narset, Enlightened Master]] and [[Riku of Two Reflections]] hanging out in my deck box because they make me feel cool and strong. I was wondering if there were any other βcoolβ Planeswalkers or legendary creatures that you would recommend taking with me to the hospital to have around β bonus points if theyβre disabled, because that would be so cool! Iβm look to make up a collection of random cards that make me feel strong so I can have them in the coming months, so there doesnβt need to be any synergy or anything like that. They wonβt go into my decks, theyβll just be hanging around keeping me company!

If you could have any non-legendary creature as your commander, which would you choose? I've always been intrigued about what other people would do in this scenario, since there are exponentially more options compared to just legends. What type of deck would you run? Is there something this creature can do that can't be found in the myriad of legendary options in EDH?
I think I'd run [[Priest of Forgotten Gods]] aristocrats, just because I love it as a sacrifice outlet. I'd just run a ton of death triggers and small sacrifice fodder.
Disclaimer: I know someone posted something like this over a year ago, but there have been so many creatures since then, so some answers may have changed.
Something that I think would be super cool to see would be for a set to come out where one of the Planeswalker cards is a surprise reveal that a previously seen random legendary creature actually had a planeswalker spark.
The closest to this I think they have done in the past is with first Venser and then Samut. Future Sight had [[Venser, Shaper Savant]], and then Scars of Mirrodin gave us [[Venser, the Sojourner]]. In Amonkhet, we first see [[Samut, Voice of Dissent]]. In the next set, Hour of Devastation, her spark ignites and she has the new card [[Samut, the Tested]].
However, I want something a bit more unexpected. I want a character that had little spotlight or lore just showing up on a completely different plane with the new card type. Imagine seeing a character for the first time in years, and now they are a planeswalker. For the audience it is (at least at first) a mystery as to how their spark ignited.
Let's say a new set comes out on Alara for example. Imagine one of the planeswalker cards for the set is someone random, like [[Svella, Ice Shaper]] or [[Kopala, Warden of Waves]]. Or we finally get to go back to Lorwyn, and one of the planewalkers to be featured is [[Najeela, the Blade-Blossom]] or [[Zedruu the Greathearted]]. How did this character's spark ignite? Why have they traveled to this plane?
This is partially inspired by a character like [[Tamiyo, the Moon Sage]]. The first time we saw her on Innistrad, it was a surprise to see a Moonfolk on Innistrad. Which is the point; planeswalkers can show up anywhere, and they are aliens to the worlds they visit. Wrenn being on Innistrad recently is similar, as she is only visiting Innistrad to find a new tree companion, and is otherwise unconnected to the plot of the plane, at least so far.
So who would you love to see go from legendary creature to surprise planeswaker? How did their spark ignite? And what planes would they choose to visit, and why? What is [[Selvala, Heart of the Wilds]] doing on Pyrulea? How did [[Danitha Capashen, Paragon]] end up on Muraganda? What scheming is [[Rona, Disciple of Gix]] up to on Belenon?
I know loot is decided after the death of the legendary, but I would rather it spawn before and be in use. Supermutants who drop a quad ffr minigun should be using it on you before you take it from their bodies. Because why wouldnt he be using it? Would make things a bit more interesting.
And yes I want the rad roach who would drop the two shot fatman to use it also. Nothing in this game is rational. Entertain me.
I know it doesn't effect gameplay, but I do think it's a signpost of what WoTC cares about.
Flavor text being omitted from the face of cards in Arena was my first ever minor gripe when the client was first shown to the public but I eventually got over it as it could still be found in-game. There are plenty of cards in paper without flavor text, but there has always been some practical reasoning as to why. Theoretically, in a digital client where flavor text is essentially meta-data, every card could (I would argue maybe eve should) have it.
Flavor (the broad concept, not just the text) has always been the driving force behind Magic's charisma. Cutting these corners can't possibly save them that much effort/energy, so why skip it?
This set could've given us our first ever planeswalker with flavor text

How do you all at higher levels get boss DNA, legendary creatures and stuff from Gyrosphere battles? I am at level 40 and I still don't get anything... I tried the gyrosphere once and at this level, I found neither of those two... I don't have VIP
For Legendary I suppose it'd definitely make sense since it'll take ages to get that 1 missing final tier, plus... what would you do with the duplicate final tier creature?
What about Rare creatures though? Would you suggest merge 3 the penultimate tier creatures to quickly unlock the habitat?
Hey all! I finally published Volume 3 of my Strixhaven Supplemental series. Included are new creatures and magic items with inspiration taken directly from different Strixhaven and C21 MTG cards.
Also included are a number of legendary creatures you're welcome to use as bosses at the end of side-quests. The CR for these creatures ranges from 3 to 21 and includes both Extus and the Blood Avatar. Several of these creatures use experimental and unique combat mechanics that should pose a challenge to even veteran players. I hope you all enjoy! Happy New Year!
For example, [[Forsaken Monument]] could be a really good colorless commander, built in anthem, turbo Mana, and life gain all at once.
Or maybe [[Endless Ranks of the Dead]] for a zombie tribal deck. [[Burning Sands]] for a brutal creature hate deck. [[Defense of the Heart]] for constant massive creature tutoring.
I keep finding myself stuck with slower creatures that die to precise pounce or cunning rampage despite being able to reduce damage or dodge. What are some good Legendary creatures to counter hard-hitting cunning creatures such as Alloraptor and Velociraptor? Iβm at 2700 at Lockdown, so Iβm at a point in the game where Legendaries are common on teams.
With the popularity of the tribe always been surprised we don't have a a angels matter commander. Demons, hydras, sphinx, dragons all have theirs and so do zombies, merfolk, elves, goblins.
Maybe it's a white thing? I'd like to see angel matters in Boros or Naya
Besides your regular cards that are sometimes allowed to play as your commander (Nephilim cycle, fate reforged clan-specific Mythic cycle, the cycle of 3-color mythics from shards of alara), I think there is untapped potential for non-legendary commanders.
My personal picks for fun deck ideas include [[Etherium Sculptor]] for some cheap artifact shenanigans, [[Murkfiend Liege]] for some reliable simic creature heavy playstyles, and [[Master of Cruelties]] to make the rest of the table groan.
After a session my players enjoyed a lot, but was a bit frustrating for me, I want to check if I did things correctly.
I was running a monster (Gnoll Vampire from RotFM) modified to have legendary actions and resistances. The plan was to have a hit and run monster that would threaten the squishier party members.
Then the moon druid wild shapes into a giant constrictor snake, uses his constrict attack, and grapples/restrains the vampire. At this point, the "move" legendary action becomes useless - his speed is zero. Come his turn, the vampire has to choose between multi attack at disadvantage, or using his action to break the grapple (spoiler - he tried to break and failed).
This goes on for 2-3 turns, but with attacks on him at advantage, he dies pretty quickly without really putting anyone in danger.
Kudos to them for thinking of it, but - did I miss something rules wise, or are grappling attacks just that powerful?
Or vise versa. I think its crazy that there is more than one hellkite tyrant flying around.
Edit : by should be legendary I meant for lore. Like there shouldn't be more than one of them but since the creature isn't legendary that means there is more than one.
First and foremost, a little warning, I entered the Magic: The Gathering world only a few days before Strixhaven released, so Iβm fairly new. If it sounds like I donβt know what Iβm talking about, I donβt.
I do know, though, that not every Legendary creature isnβt meant to be a Commander. I understand that the deans of Strixhaven ([[Plargg/Augusta]], [[Valentin/Lisette]], [[Kianne/Imbraham]], [[Uvilda/Nassari]] and [[Shaile/Embrose]] are better in Standard, but Iβve been using them as Commanders with varying degrees of success.
I want to know if anyone has any similar stories, and what they are.
Note this is after some testing with her in the 99 of a siona deck where she did very well and more recently in two games on spelltable with her as the leader and am looking forward to tuning the deck further and replacing some of the proxies and stand ins.
She has the same obvious issues as any go wide commander in that board wipes destroy her but there are enough ways in white to give her phasing, bounce her out, or give her indestructible to work around this issue. producing 3 tokens per attack and growing very quickly can allow her to pivot from a go wide style to a pseudo Voltron.
while what card draw is still nothing great between clamp, tome, mentor of the meek, and the white monarch options I was competitive if not blown away by my card draw.
Its a bit slow to get going as white ramp is still bad so the deck sort of durdles for a bit longer then i think a aggro deck would like but hey your white board wipe and then set up.
Has anyone else found what appears to be an unpopular commander that just clicks or is this card more popular then i think?
