Advice on career path. Is becoming a civil engineer focusing on hydraulic or environmental engineering the right choice?

Hello there,

I am a 28 year old Dutch person with a degree in English and I have been thinking of a drastic turn of the rudder, to speak, by perhaps going down the road of civil engineering. Considering the rising sea levels due to environmental decay I think hydraulic and environmental engineers will be very necessary in the future. Building dams and holding the sea at bay is something that the Netherlands is well-known for and I thought that maybe I should capitalise on my country's expertise by going down this road.

My big concern, however, is that it will be a rather large investment of time, effort and resources. It will take about 6 years to complete and I will be around 35 at completion if I were to start as soon as possible. I would be without much experience competing with people much younger than I am or people with much more experience. Do any of you have any similar experience? Do you think starting at this age would be a considerable handicap?

engineering company cherry picker hydraulic line busted and covered my car in hydraulic oil

NYC here, parked legally on a side street when an architecture and engineering firm and their rental cherry picker covered my car in hydraulic oil droplets from it being aerosolized in the air when a line burst under high pressure. Other cars got it much worse with the boom reaching over them and dripping a lot of fluid onto their cars. I have video of the boom gushing oil and pictures of it on my car and others. I would just like for either party to cover the cost of getting the car clean again, I understand its not corrosive (not positive on hydraulic oil type used in this one) but the car was clean beforehand. Who do I contact and how do I go about this

The murder of Simonetta Ferrero. How hydraulic engineering and acoustic can finally explain this murder after 50 years.

Dear Friends,

I’m surprised in realizing that the mysterious murder of Simonetta Ferrero, on July 24, 1971, who was stabbed 40 times in a toilet of the UniversitΓ  Cattolica of Milan (Italy), in a Saturday morning around 11.30, and without any sign of rape or robbery on her, is getting a wide attention abroad, , as I was convinced that this case might be interesting just for Italian readers, who knew it for 50 years.

However, for your information here is a very detailed analysis on the case

https://www.academia.edu/45147459/La_soluzione_del_delitto_della_Cattolica_del_24_luglio_1971_Come_lingegneria_idraulica_e_lacustica_spiegano_uno_dei_pi%C3%B9_misteriosi_delitti_della_storia_criminale_italiana

(The solution of the β€œmurder of Cattolica” of July 24, 1971. How Hydraulic engineering and acoustic explain one of the most mysterious murders in the Italian criminal history)

- in Italian but I’m now summarizing for you in English what it is written in those 18 pages, and if you want you can quickly use a Google translator, and get the full translation from Italian to English.

Please, I would like to preface this, by saying that I deeply analyzed, as a criminologist – for many years after 1998 – this strange murder, and I was able to discuss it many times with the prosecutor who directed the investigation in 1971, Ugo Paolillo. I could examine directly the records of police, the photos taken in that toilet and on the body of Simonetta Ferrero (by the way, you find always in Internet websites that she was 26 year old, but she was born on April 2, 1946, NOT 1945 as you always find everywhere. So she was 25 y.o., not 26).

What you don’t’ know is that Paolillo was suspecting that the killer of Simonetta was one of the 4 workers/carpenters who were resurfacing the pavement below the toilet , and were using jackhammers, at the moment when Simonetta was stabbed. However, Paolillo was unable to find a strong evidence to support an indictment against them, and in addition police officers who worked with him were convinced that the killer was a sexual maniac (although no sign at all of sexual offense was find on her body and on her clothes).

My investigation, during these years, came to the same conclusions of Paolillo, mainly for

[University: Engineering: Hydraulics] Calculating discharge through a pipe as the head of water on the inlet changes.

I could do with some help calculating the discharge rate from a reservoir and factoring in how that flow will decrease as the head of water decreases.

The information I have is:

Maximum height of water in the reservoir is: 10.52m

Diameter of the pipe: 0.3m

length of the pipe: 450m

fall of piper from the reservoir to discharge: 14m

Pipe material: cement lined iron ductile

Help would be greatly appreciated.
