I'm a native speaker of Cebuano, a language in the Philippines, and though Bisaya is in itself considered a language (as it should!), some linguists apparently think that Cebuano-Waray-Hiligaynon-etc. (the Visayan languages) form more of a dialect continuum than being a group of separate languages. Like dialects of Bisaya, the language.

I'd accept that for Hiligaynon, because as a Cebuano speaker I've had a full conversation with a Hiligaynon speaker without even realizing (it was pretty confusing but overall intelligible). Waray-Waray, on the other hand... I've had conversations with Waray people and the words are incredibly different. I think it's a totally different language from Cebuano and Hiligaynon. I'd accept Cebuano and Hiligaynon as dialects of each other, but Waray-Waray? I don't think so....

Why is it so different? Was there a different civilization/culture in Leyte before, separate from the nearby Visayan islands?

I'm from Southern Leyte, but I know that I speak Cebuano due to migration, so the question is still worth asking.

You must be based in the U.S., have valid work permission in the U.S., and attend one in-person training session, with all expenses paid by ACTFL.

Just wondering if anyone has the same experience me. Basically, I was never "taught" my native language - Hiligaynon. I'm not sure if there's even a course for it. Everything I know, I know through experience. I spoke in it all the time up until high school. I would exchange short notes and text messages in shorthand with fellow speakers and that's the most writing/reading I've encountered in my language.

For every other language I know and use, I was taught at school and had loads of resources to learn and practice with except actual people who are fluent in the language (not counting the teachers). English had the most use, so I was better at it first. Then Filipino when I moved to the capital.

Now I'm wondering if there's a course for my language (I'll be looking it up) and if it would be useful to actually know the formal grammar, spelling, etc...

I'm actually kinda scared of losing it since it's no longer the default language used at home and I have little hope that my son will learn it from me.

I noticed most of the time Philippine languages barely has any one word syllable aside from particles, pronouns and contractions.

So I was reading the wikipedia page for Hiligaynon (link), and in the grammar section it shows that verbs are inflected for real and unreal aspects. At first I thought they were referring to irrealis and realis moods, but then I realized that the chart they used already distinguished moods that would've been covered by irrealis mood. So what exactly are real and unreal aspects?

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
