[Request] Grooved Sphere - Rail riding morph ball

I would love to be able to be able to ride rails without the need of a platform or the gravity effected rail hook. My solution would be a morph ball that latches on to rails like a platform and gains incredible speed doing so!

If possible, I would like to make rail traversing in sphere mode as simple as hold forward: which ever direction you began moving, any turns and twists won't require pushing a new button to continue moving in the right direction. T junction coming up? Just hold the directional key you want to go and you will go that way!

Idea for a new motion system: X/Y Rails are long twisted induction motor shafts. Tool head contains inductors driving X and Y overlapping rails. Bismuth used to levitate tool & keep rails in fixed magnetic grooves. No contact friction between motion system components at ALL.

Input shaping tuning would be used to compensate for motion changes / jerk / accel, to automatically counteract motion perturbations / destabilization / disrupt the tight tolerance of fixed magnetic suspension to maintain highly accurate position centered on the rails, and maintaining a fixed nozzle z height and fixed tool orientation. Motion analysis for input shaping could even take into account forces from the electronics/filament tether. Or perhaps even better, a second motion system above the primary could be tasked with keeping the tether/filament tube close enough suspended above the tool, that maximum speeds could be achieved.

Another different idea I had:
A VERY large gantry on top, suspending a series of smaller gantries below (either subdivided in 1/2s or maybe a Fibonacci scale reduction, idk) for precise motion or something

Another idea:

No gantry at all. Ceiling consists of an array of electromagnets, that can be activated successively in patterns which move any number of tool heads, with a precomputed swarm path that avoids entangling horizontally arcing filament tubes/tethers...
or even just filament tubes. If you interspersed electrodes between the electromagnets, so each toolhead is constantly connected to 24v power, onboard bluetooth could be used to control extruders / hotend heaters / thermistors.

Then again maybe just having 3-6 robot arm print heads would be the best way to go all in all.

The Sole Survivor is not a Synth - Let's Talk About It.

Fallout 4 PSA: You are not a synth!

Hi! I’m just here to tell you that you aren’t a synth and explain in no uncertain terms why that is

the case. Honestly, the theory that Fallout 4’s player character, the Sole Survivor, is a synth? I expected that to die out years ago. But we’ve got some really large and impressive mods that have this faulty assumption baked into their story, so I’m here to set the record straight.

But before I do that, I’d like to discuss why this theory is so appealing to a large swath of the player base and, as such, refuses to die.

Skipping over the obvious benefit of role-playing the Terminator, quite a few people do not want to play as Nate or Nora. It...really is that simple. The story proceeds as if the SS is one, specific character. Probably has four in all Special stats. It does not care if you have 10 Intelligence with a maxed out Science perk, Justin Ayo will still decry your lack of scientific credentials. It does not matter if you are currently wearing power armor, Finn will still try to mug you and get wasted by Hancock. It does not matter if you just walk past Piper and the Mayor while they are having their argument, you will still have Story of the Century dropped into your quest log.

Don’t get me wrong, Fallout 4 is a game of choices. The game is filled with questions of your allegiance. Do you side with the iron men crewing the USS constitution or betray them to the scavengers? Do you help Bobbi No-Nose steal from Hancock to gratify her envy or do you reward her with a traitor’s death? The biggest of these is the Synth question; is honoring their inalienable rights a worthy trade-off for scientific progress? Are they too dangerous to be kept alive to begin with? Or are their rights a necessary sacrifice to build a brighter future?

But none of these decisions are the players.

These decisions are Nate’s or Nora’s.

If Fallout 4 was filled with dialogue checks, the four options you get constantly changing and switching up depending on your SPECIAL stat allocation and perks obtained, the general opinion of Fallout 4’s story would be much more positive. Because then these decisions would feel like the player’s decision.

But it’s the same dialogue every single time.

Going with the assumption that the Player Character is a synth is a rebellion against this idea that you’re a grieving parent searching for their child and nothing else. Against this set of rails you’ve been bolted to. That your character was prog

Help with drawers that are too wide for replacement side mount ball bearing sliders

I have two night stands that had bad rails, so I took out the drawers and ordered replacement rails. The replacement rails are 0.5" (1.25cm), while the old ones were 3/8" (1cm). I did not think to check the thickness as I assumed it was universal. Obviously, it has proven to be a very tight fit, and while I DID take one drawer, accurately as possible put in the slides, sunk screws across the length (though I forgot about the bottom reveal, so I would need to raise them slightly), I could push them in about 3/4 of the way (very hard to do and I know I would not normally want to do this) so that I could see how much the cabinet slide dug into the drawer.

The width of the back of the drawer is approx. 19 1/8" (48.6cm), while the chest drawer opening is approx. 20" (50.8cm). The needed clearance I have read about it 1" + 1/8", which this clearly fails to achieve. Am I not getting the right sliders? Do they make them less thick than 0.5" still, or was this some kind of specialized slider (the furniture is from 2009).

Here are the sliders side by side.

I figure I can 1) plane the side of the drawers, B) router/chisel grooves on the side of the drawers, or iii) find exact duplicates of the original sliders.

Please advise, and thank you in advance!!

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Divergence in Sound : The Curious Fork from Blood with The Missing Man and Bodies

As with any AFI release, we as fans are almost immediately and embarrassingly eager for the next record.

Following the release of Blood many of us were no doubt wondering what evolutionary step would come next? Critics felts songs like Aurelia and Above The Bridge were early indicators of what could follow. Obviously, no one could say for sure.

Signal The Missing Man, an ep that opens rather "classically AFI" with Trash Bat while still feeling advanced in its way; toms as quick chorus interludes; choppy, techy verse parts... the songs feels like a band well-honed in their sound while throwing new tricks in the mix.

Then comes the rest of the ep. It is AFI surely, but a different veneer is present. Break Angels and Back Into the Sun play with arrangements that the band had never worked with to this point. Angels is icy and attractive while Sun is a steady, driving anthem that sustains its momentum rather than flying off the epic rails like some of us might hope. Get Dark and Missing Man arguably feel a little more familiar structurally, and yet even then, the band is utilizing new sonic tools β€” fuzzy, almost lo-fi thuds for the rhythm section in Dark and the contrasting electronic elements to the acoustics in Man.

All this to say, The Missing Man ep suggested an emerging AFI that would produce a recognizable album with no shortage of unsuspected flair and nuance.

Then a fair amount of time passed. The timeline of where/when Bodies was written, recorded, revised(?) is known to the band and a few others (though I would guess more than of you know exact dates).

Bodies finally releases. Based on reactions, it seems quite divisive in the community. Suffice it to say the record is a departure, which is not to say it is wholly unfamiliar. Twisted Tongues, Far Too Near, On Your Back, and even No Eyes, retain the vibes of what one could/would characterize as "AFI".

The second clutch of songs I would consider departures in tone, approach, or arrangement. Escape from LA, Begging for Trouble, Looking Tragic β€” each having an AFI feel while conversely feeling like other bands/other sounds. LA is layered with tech and fuzz but has Davey's vocal barb intact; Trouble has the big chorus guitar swell a la Crash Love era AFI ; Tragic has Jade's trademark tone.

The last group is the most genre pushing/bending by far; sonic curveballs that neither Missing Man or Blood hinted at. *Dulceria, Back from the Flesh, Death of t

I have discovered a bridge at the edge of the mountains, where the footprints only ever go halfway across. [FINAL]

(Part 1)

β€œIt’s not much farther”, Kalaela tells me as we pass into the forest.

We’ve been walking for about twenty minutes since leaving the little cave, and her mood improved when I offered her some food I’d brought with me. Nothing special, just some store-bought cookies… But she enjoyed them so much I actually felt a little bad telling her that I didn’t have any more to give her.

I’m also not really sure what to expect of this β€˜hideout’ she mentioned. I’m kind of picturing a Robin-Hood-esque, roughed up campsite strung up between some trees. A band of merry men, all with antlers hanging out in the woods...

The truth however, is quite different.

β€œDamn”, is all I can say when I first lay eyes on it. On the β€˜hideout’.

β€œHere we are”, says Kalaela, and she spreads her arms.

Before us and nestled in the trees are a series of narrow wooden houses. They lean into and against each other at unusual angles, but aside from this they look remarkably stable, and indeed, very liveable.

What I’m seeing is less a basecamp and more an intricate little village. The inhabitants are antlered, sure, but that’s about all I got correct with my prediction. They are of all ages, and they stare at me as we pass them by. There are modest market stalls here, stone wells surrounded by leaves at their bases, and signposts grown into the trees.

β€œKalaela”, comes a gruff voice to our right. Kalela stops and I do likewise, watching as a tall and wide-set man puts down his tools and walks right over to us. He’s massive, and his antlers go out further and wider than Kalaela’s do. β€œYou’re back early”.

β€œHey, I did what I was supposed to, Lurdae”, she retorts, pointing up at him. β€œDelena’s heading out to cover the watch right now, and look, you see what I did? I brought back a boy from the other side! Safely! I saved him!”

The man she called Lurdae looks down to me and raises an eyebrow.

β€œβ€¦Good” he says, after a beat. β€œThe machinefolk have no respect for natural life. Every death in this valley is a stain on the spirits’ own land”.

β€œIt’s uh, good to meet you”, I say to him. β€œMy name is Stan”.

β€œHm”, he replies. β€œStan. It’s been a long time since a human has crossed over the bridge. You chose a less than opportune time to pass”.

Behind him are a group of antlered children. I can’t hear what they’re saying, but one of them points to me, and the others gawk and stare.

Hello, this is a follow up post on a contribution i posted earlier this week.

Link to the old post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/watercooling/comments/ruohc9/my_try_to_get_better_airflow_in_the_system_and/

So my original plan was to build a frame only for the top to fit more fans for more cooling efficiency but i decided to do both top and botten to give it a better look and also more efficiency. I try to show you how i did build the contruction and how i did improve the airpressure for the radiators. For those who want a more detailed background info on my original temp "problem" feel free to read my other post.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I started with making a little sketch for the parts to show off how i wanted them to look like

https://preview.redd.it/ssuhf1vgix981.png?width=1536&format=png&auto=webp&s=217c62d9da569bca34fd19bc49510d2704c55f45

I know, pretty basic and not even clean but i only needed the side view of the wood that would make up the frame. I wanted to keep the 45 degree cutout on the bottom because i needed ventilation anyway and i already liked the design so ....

I designed it so that the glass would overlap like 5mm or so into the frame bot for the top and the bottom.

https://preview.redd.it/ctrqbs5jix981.jpg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2e8fc697286052a5ea151670d75468c1839178a5

The wood i used was a section of an prefabricated oakwoodtable i found leaying around in my company. Therefore i didnt have to plane it and it was straight already and had the right wood moisture level.

https://preview.redd.it/pvzpuh3kix981.png?width=2245&format=png&auto=webp&s=2513f5e6e53ee982df8ea308bffa714a4bf08839
