I attempted to translate van Swieten's report about the vampire rumours of 1755
I read the report, and did a rough translation (merely summarising those passages where van Swieten goes off on a tangent) into English, for fun.
Some people claim van Swieten was the the man on whom Stoker modeled his van Helsing character - that claim is almost certainly untrue. But van Swieten's text is one of many scientific and religious texts of the era, some of which (inadvertently) helped to familiarise educated circles (including authors) in Western Europe with the vampire myth, thus laying the foundation for the earliest vampire literature.
