Any birders in KW?

Hey I'm looking for like minded people in KW, I am into birding and wanted to see if any one would be interested to buddy up for birding hikes around KW.

Cheers

When a birder has a baby

I love birds, always been into feeding and watching the birds…. Hobby that started with my dad early as I can remember.

My wife and I had our first child at the hospital and we are in the family room getting ready to be sent home with our new little one. We are very exhausted from the past day of delivery and the first night with the new one in the hospital.

The nurse is giving us this final quick quiz about breast feeding before we check out. Asking my wife and I things like β€œWhat do you do if your feeding and the baby starts choking?” Or β€œHow do you burp the baby? How do you tell they are getting milk?”on and on.

We are very tired and the barrage of questions is starting to wear us down. The nurse finally asks us β€œwhat sound do swallows make?”

My tired, little brain short circuits and I find myself slightly frustrated she is asking such a vague and random question. In complete seriousness and with a dumbfounded look on my face I reply…..β€œIt obviously depends what species”

My family turns and stares at me like I’m a complete idiot and I slowly realize I am.

It clicks she was asking about what a baby swallowing milk sounds like.

Just a birder having a baby over here.

EDIT: Just wanted to thank you all for your kind words and congratulations. And of course thank you for the awards! This is such a kind, wonderful community to be a part of.

Wouldn’t the world be a better place if everyone was a Birder?

Hope all of you have a wonderful day. Thanks again.

[Offer] Christmas cards for backyard birders [US to US]

Update: Thanks everyone; I will work to get these out Friday! I went to my job networking group this morning, and it was a very exciting end of year meeting. I needed a nap this afternoon, so I will respond shortly.

β€”β€”

Hi, although I'm out of Christmas stamps and have moved on to forever flag stamps, I still have several boxes of holiday/Christmas cards from a FB Marketplace haul and a thrift shop find!

There are more than enough bird-themed cards featuring two backyard birds and a couple of wild fowl in the batch.

If you are a birder, please comment below with your favorite bird, be a member of RAoC, and PM your preferred mailing address. (I don't chat, so please PM.) I will add you to my list.

My favorite birds are Cardinals, cedar waxwings, those tiny winter birds that come through in January, purple house finches, jays, and the mean old mockingbird. This year, we had a grackle nest, a purple finch nest, a duck nest, and probably a couple I missed! Hoping there will be more to come in 2022.

I will continue to post holiday card offers through next week if time permits. Merry week before Christmas!

Local Birders?

I follow r/birding already but it is rare to encounter a birder from the local WNY area. I joined Buffalo Ornithological Society recently and participated in Saturday’s installment of the CBC thru Audobon but to be completely honest the crowd felt a bit… unwelcoming? Anyhow I’m 35 and work a 9-5 and I know a lot of birders I’ve met are retired/older, so I’ve struck out on meetup as I rarely have weekday mornings free. Anyone aware of other local birding groups?

Kind of a long shot, but: birders at the Swift Creek reservoir, what are you looking at?

Been noticing a lot of folks with cameras/binoculars on the single public landing off of Genito road... There's been a lot of migrating waterfowl there, but is there anything in particular us laypeople should be on a lookout for? (Other than the 4 bald eagles that went through the area a couple of days ago).

New birder!

Hi, friends! I'm a fairly new birder. I live in Ocala, Florida and have just been backyard watching. My house backs up to the forest, so I hear many different bird noises.

Anything you can recommend that will make my experience more robust? Bird guides? Any specific (affordable) binoculars? Bird feeders? Food type?

I was extremely relaxed and joyful watching these precious birds this morning and want to get into it.

Thanks for the guidance, Ani
