Algebraic Geometry : Trouble with proof that open affine subsets form a basis

I'm reading through hartshorne's algebraic geometry, and I can't understand the proof of proposition I.4.3 : " On any variety Y, there is a base for the topology consisting of open affine subsets. ".

The part I'm struggling with is this sentence :

Furthermore, Y - Y ∩ H is a closed subset of A - H, which is affine by (4.2), hence Y - Y ∩ H is affine.

(context : Y is a quasi-affine variety of A and H a hypersurface containing cl(Y)-Y)

which seems to take for granted that a closed subset of an affine variety is an affine variety.(and hence irreducible), but this is clearly false (take a finite subset of A^(1) for example). Can anyone tell me what I got wrong ? Thank you !

[Grad level]Given an affine basis and subsequent representation of any point in affine hull via a matrix multiplication and addition operation

Hello,

In a finite dimensional vector space, we have the following definitions:

flat: set S such that if x and y are in S, then lambda x + (1-lambda)y also belong to S for any real lambda.

r-flat: an r-dimensional flat, A

affine basis for r-flat A: ordered set (a0,...,ar) such that every point of A can be uniquely represented barycentrically using set (a0,...,ar)

barycentric representation: Any point lambda_0 a0 + ... + lambda_r ar, where lambda_0 + ... + lambda_r = 1.

I am trying to see the implication of the following theorem:

https://imgur.com/a/7xzOVsw

Essentially, the theorem says that given an affine basis, (a0,...,ar), the barycentric coordinates (lambda_0,...,lambda_r) of any point of A can be obtained via matrix multiplication with the coordinates of the point in the standard basis followed by a constant vector addition. That is,

Lambda coordinates of x in A = (lambda_0,...,lambda_r)^t = a specific (r+1) component vector + a specific (r+1 x n) matrix multiplied by a nx1 vector of coordinates of x in the standard usual basis.

What do these lambda coordinates mean if we perform the above operation for x NOT in A but some other point in R^n ?

My thoughts are that if we use an x that is NOT in A, then the resulting lambda's will NOT sum upto 1. Is there a way this can be proved?

The basis of my mod: Affinity

At the moment, the two extra dimensions we have in Minecraft are incredibly barren. The Nether was only created as a means of transportation, given that one block in the Nether translates to eight blocks in the Overworld. And when the End was created, it served as an "end" to the game, requiring the Nether to add a few more mobs and the Nether Fortress to make the progression include the Nether.

The Nether introduced a new mechanic - potion making, and allowed us to strengthen ourselves and weaken our enemies. When the outer end islands were introduced in 1.9, they added more ways to explore with the Elytra, and the Shulker Boxes. But the all-encompassing theme of Minecraft is freedom. The ability to change and remake whatever you come across. Not just in the game, but through mods, commands, functions and community-made content.

So I decided to stay true to Minecraft's theme, and add a swathe of new content allowing you not only to change the world, but to change yourself, primarily by means of Affinities. What Affinity you have defines how a mob will react to certain elements (such as fire, air or water). The new dimensions, where one is based upon each element, are highly interrelated while still retaining their own theme, unique loot and high replayability.

Once you have significantly explored a dimension, you will have gathered resources that allow you to change your Affinity from the default air Affinity to something that will allow you to traverse and survive the dimension more easily. Ideally, when you have mastered all the elements and all the unique playing styles and strategies each dimension offers, you will essentially become a god, called an Omniaffine.

MNMD Starter Due Diligence

Alright so you've obviously heard the craze by now about psych stocks and I'm sure a lot of it has been gain porn and fat stacks. If MNMD's poor up-listing performance today didn't turn you off, here is some DD that will hopefully give you a better idea of what the company does. Plenty of people seem to think that MNMD is going to be selling tabs of acid and caps of mush to folks, but that's just not it. Take a look at whats below if you're interested.

Psych Sector Quick Overview

At the moment, there are (I think) 28 publicly traded companies in the sector. They are pretty much all penny stocks, except for Compass and Mind Med. This is a nascent sector and most likely an extended play given the time it takes for the drugs to come to market. Basically the sector can be divided into three main groups: 1) Drug Developers, 2) Clinic companies, and 3) Recreational Companies. Many companies blend these different categories but the one we are looking at today is predominantly in the drug development space. The drugs they are working on can be classified into two distinct categories: 1) Classical psychedelic compounds (Psilocybin, LSD, DMT, etc.) and 2) Novel psychedelic compounds (Derivatives and Novel Formulations). MindMed is focused on developing a blend of these two. There's an incredible wealth of research that has gone into these substances and how they are presumed to be far more effective than traditional therapy options in treating a variety of psychological disorders and ailments. In fact, Ketamine is already being used in assisted therapy in many places around the world. The sector had quite the run last fall and early into the new year. Looking like there might be another run based on a couple of big-name catalysts in the coming weeks. Because of the volatility and anecdotal hype, plenty of people have likened the sector to weed. But anyone who has felt the benefits of these drugs knows it's not the same. Sure, most of the companies are going to fail, and many don't have a lot to offer at all. However, MindMed is one of the biggest names, with the biggest backers and the most expansive drug pipelines, so it's nice to think they are in a league of their own.

Mind Medicine:

To get us started, their mission statement: β€œMindMed’s mission is to discovery, development, and deploy psychedelic inspired medicines and therapies intended to treat diseases in the areas of psychiatry, neurology, addiction, **

Dispelling FOMO Panic: Porom LD (Efficient but Imperfect)

Introduction

Hey folks, this is Drusain. I don’t often write character evaluations, but I enjoy discussing characters that maybe you haven’t played before, and I want to explain the character concept, the kit’s strengths and weaknesses, and try to help you decide whether or not you’d like to play the character. I’m coming from the perspective of a GL player who has played Porom very often. I reviewed Porom and her EX+ a month its release ( https://www.reddit.com/r/DissidiaFFOO/comments/fxadsc/dispelling_fomo_panic_porom_edition/ ), and now I’d like to review Porom with her LD weapon this time, again a few weeks ahead of time of her release.

The reason I like to do these weeks ahead of time is because I want to help you avoid falling into blind hype, FOMO fallacies, and more or less to offer a reasonable reality check about the kit before you make choose to invest or not. Part of the reality check is that we have over 140 character kits now, and very, very few people can honestly say that they fully understand or even know much about every kit in the game. And that’s fine! This is a no-judgment zone and you’re a busy person. Here, I just want to give you the opportunity, as someone who has run Porom very often since her original debut, a little guidance about her kit and how the LD changes her. Hopefully I can offer you a reasonable evaluation of what to expect if you choose to play her.

I understand that this is very long. That’s okay! This is why I wanted to put this out so early. I don’t expect you to read this in one sitting. I even do my best to section things off so you can choose what you want to read and what you might not. If you’re unsatisfied with advice about Porom’s LD outside of people telling you that β€œit’s really good” or β€œit’s a must-pull,” this is hopefully the resource you’re looking for. Porom LD definitely has made her more popular, but I want to let you know why she’s more popular, and also give you plenty of reasons for you to decide that maybe her LD isn’t for you. Not every kit is enjoyable for everyone.

Even better for you, if you don’t want to read thousands of words of text, I’ve uploaded a video that’s really just an audio version of this if you prefer that. The link is at https://youtu.be/CBVkpYqCLn4 and should be ad-free with timestamps for each section.

  • What are the applications of RepreseΠΏtation Theory?

  • What's a good starter book for Numerical AΠΏalysis?

  • What can I do to prepare for college/grad school/getting a job?

The Sunbreakers: A mostly definitive essay

This is my sixth and final attempt writing this up. Originally, it started as another β€œsmall story” similar to my post about Jagi, which you can find here. However, in my research, things just sort of… spiralled out of control. Some 3:00 a.m. theorycrafting led to a second draft. A few restless hours of sleep and some delirious post-wake up ramblings led to a third, fourth, and fifth draft. Roughly 72 hours after my original attempt, I currently sit at my kitchen table writing up the sixth, final, and definitive edition of this post. What started as a post about five blue Titan armor pieces released with The Taken King became a sprawling mess of not just rabbit holes, but entire goddamn warrens, tunnels, and rabbit civilizations

. Without further ado, I present Sunbreakers: A Definitive Treatise

Sunbreakers: The Titans before Titans.

Who were the Sunbreakers? A simple question with a not-so-simple answer. The Sunbreakers are an order of Titans, β€œborn of a darker time, when Light was an untamed weapon. The Sunbreakers brought honor to the wild, never seeking the safety of the City”^(1). They are constantly referred to as mercenaries^(2,3,4) or barbarians^(5). As their name implies, the Sunbreakers utilize solar Light, manifesting it in the form of a hammer. Sunbreakers seem to predate other Titan orders, and do not seem to have evolved past their Dark Age roots.

Although they are referred to as mercenaries, I don’t think they fall into the realm of either definition of mercenary, the adjective form being β€œa person or their behavior primarily concerned with making money at the expense of ethics”; or the noun β€œa professional soldier hired to serve in a foreign army.”^(6) Instead, I believe they are called mercenaries in an almost derogatory way- whereas the other Titan orders have straightforward principles, the Sunbreakers are mysterious, aloof, and ironically cold. The Sunbreakers fought out, in the wilds, away from the City, on distant battlefields, β€œbound by an oath” which is never fully explained.^(7) By contrast, the other orders- Stoneborn, First Pillars, Pilgrim Guard- are built around defensive actions, around protection, and, most importantly, around people. Stoneborn protected the Walls^(8), First Pillars were self-sacrificing warriors who prided themselves on β€œlast full measures”^(9), and the Pilgrim Guard escorted convoys of civilians through the Dark Ages

The Life of Ted Kaczynski (the Unabomber) & Preventing The Fascist Creep

Hey all, I'm working on topic ideas for a podcast episode on the life of Ted Kaczynski (the Unabomber) that aims to be a harsh critique of him and the eco-fascists he has inspired. If you have anything you'd like to add just let me know. You can also comment directly on the google doc:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HgZpVe0XrMOv_ofwSRS3T-qVQ8NgVjZ-CW2Q1UuCnxs/

Intro

Ted Kaczynski is the Unabomber, a homegrown terrorist who over the course of 17 years planted or mailed at least 16 bombs. He killed 3 people and wounded 24. He wasn’t a religious fundamentalist, but he was a fundamentalist. His enemy was, essentially, modern society. He grew up in Chicago, attended Harvard, but he wound up living alone in a remote cabin in the Montana woods. He was arrested in 1996 after one of the most notorious and longest manhunts in history, and he was sentenced to life in prison.

Some key life moments

Separation From Parents As A Baby

A week in the hospital as a baby where he wasn't allowed to see his parents at all for nurses being understaffed and not wanting parents to be in the way. And taking a long time to trust his parents again and be receptive to them.

Loneliness After Being Moved Forward A Year At School

Being moved forward a year at school and then getting into university another year early on top of that, so struggling to make friends at school.

Psych Experiments For The CIA

Being part of Harvard psychology experiments with professors who worked with the CIA, where the professors' objective was to humiliate the student for the philosophy they held as most important to them.

Sex Change Plans & First Desire To Kill (A Psychiatrist)

Confusion about whether he wanted a sex change operation, in order to explore desires for women which he hadn't had the space to learn to understand. Which when he changed his mind, turned into hateful resentment for a society that he felt had made him confused and depressed.

Then a desire to carefully plan his murders and pick targets he thought some people would intellectually admire him for picking, as in his eyes the evilest people deserving of fighting a guerrilla war against. Could be seen as a way of getting the validation he didn’t get from friends as a child on his own terms, for being special and intelligent enough to have discovered all these connections and go after the worst offenders.

Sayyid/Syed/ ... etc are descendants of the prophet. Although I understand there are fake sayyids ( especially in the Ottoman region ):

>In the Ottoman Empire, tax breaks for "the People of the House" encouraged many people to buy certificates of descent or forge genealogies; the phenomenon of teseyyΓΌd – falsely claiming noble ancestry – spread across ethnic, class, and religious boundaries. In the 17th century, an Ottoman bureaucrat estimated that there were 300,000 impostors. In 18th-century Anatolia, nearly all upper-class urban people claimed descent from Muhammad.[120]

There have been studies done where Sayyids are found to be more ethnically closer to arabs than to the natives.

Thomas showed that "self-identified Syeds had no less genetic diversity than those non-Syeds from the same regions, suggesting that there is no biological basis to the belief that self-identified Syeds in this part of the world share a recent common ancestry. However, self-identified men belonging to the β€˜Islamic honorific lineages’ (Syeds, Hashemites, Quraysh and Ansari) show a greater genetic affinity to Arab populationsβ€”despite the geographic distance – than do their neighbouring populations from South Asia.[111]

Silver, It's Alloys, And Why They Are Important.

https://www.totalmateria.com/page.aspx?ID=CheckArticle&LN=EN&site=ktn&NM=239

"Silver and silver alloys are most often associated with beautiful tableware, jewelry and coins. However, more than half or world silver demands are from growing industrial requirements. It is difficult to imagine development in electronics without silver and silver alloys. Silver alloys intended for industrial application should be generally characterized by high electrical conductivityas well as high mechanical and functional properties, stable also at elevated temperature.

Silver is another unique member of the metals family - the "whitest" of all metals. In its pure form this moon-colored metal is highly lustrous, and can be polished to a mirror finish.

Silver was known and used by primitive man. The ancient Hebrews called it by a name meaning pale. The Greeks knew it by a name meaning shining. American Indians called it "tears of the moon". The chemical symbol for silver, Ag, comes from its Latin name, argentinum.

Like gold, silver is considered a precious metal, and is extremely malleable and ductile. It is harder than gold, but softer than copper. Silver can be hammered into sheets so thin that it would take 100,000 of them to make a stack an inch high. Silver has a specific gravity of 10.5, and a melting point of 1760Β°F (960Β°C) - almost 200Β°F below that of gold.

The highest purity of silver commercially attainable is 99.95% (nominally considered 100%), but because of its softness and susceptibility to damage, silver is rarely used in pure form.

Many silver alloy compositions are known. Some of these are used for jewelry and flatware, while others are used in brazing compositions and as electrical conductors.

Pure silver is very soft and ductile but can be hardened by alloying. Copper is the favorite hardener and normally is employed in the production of sterling silver, which must contain a minimum of 92.5% silver, and also in the production of coin silver. Silver-copper eutectic and modifications containing other elements such as zinc, tin, cadmium, phosphorus, or lithium are widely used for brazing purposes, where strong joints having relatively good corrosion resistance are required.

Where higher strengths at elevated temperature are required, silver-copper-palladium alloys and other silver-palladium alloys are suitable. The addition of a small amount of silver to copper raises the recrystallizing temperature without adverse effect upon the electric

The History of Multipliers & Boosts

The idea for this was sparked by a recent conversation, but essentially I decided to take a look and track the history of how Captain Ability and Special Ability multipliers and boosts have changed and affected the meta throughout the years. Similar to the last one of these I did, I'll be working off the JP dates and characters.

So without further ado, let's get right into it:

2014

With the game just starting out, Bandai's idea of a meta was pretty basic and barebones, as you'd expect, since they were testing things out and deciding on how they wanted to progress in the coming years:

#Captain Abilities

  • In terms of Captain Abilities, the gold standard at this point in time was 2x boosts, often alongside something else:

  • 2x with 2x HP: This was usually to a specific typing like STR, DEX, QCK etc, and seen in characters such as Story Ashura Zoro, RR Vista, RR Jozu etc, and was generally the preferred Captain Ability to have, as it offered unparalled tankiness to slowly whittle a boss down over time, as back then bosses didn't normally do anything nasty if you stalled them out

  • 2x with 2x RCV: Initially introduced as the counterpart to the above, this was again usually limited to a specific typing, and seen in characters like RR PSY Bonney, RR QCK Capone etc - due to being heavily reliant on the RNG of RCV orbs, this sort of Captain Ability quickly fell out of favour and wouldn't be seen again for quite a while

  • 2.5x Captain Abilities did exist at this point in time, although they were generally limited to a single class, and came with nothing else, essentially trading in stability/bonuses for extra damage, a mechanic that Bandai logically took to the next level with...

  • 3x Captain Abilities: Yes, they did exist all the way back here, but they were balanced by being heavily conditional and limited. For example RR DEX Apoo boosted DEX by 3x only when your HP was full, and RR INT Drake boosted INT by 3x only when your HP was below 30%, and at this point in time there weren't too many ways to easily reduce/recover your health, making this even more of a gamble. This was of course taken to the extreme with the game's first legend, V1 WB, who offered an incredible, unbeaten rainbow 3x boost, but only when your HP was below 30%

  • This year also saw the introduction of V1 Rayleigh, who offered another new style of boost, being the chain multiplier increase. This style of Captain Ability would not be seen again for quite a few years, and honest

SANJI, THE HIDDEN PROTAGONIST OF ONE PIECE

Hi guys, today I want to share with you some thoughts and observations about why I think Sanji is the closest member in the crew to be a protagonist after Luffy. Oda has always treated Sanji differently from the other members of the crew, to the point of giving him such depth that it can be compared with that of Luffy. Before downvoting or express your disappointment, just know two things:

Β· I’m going to list the points that I remember, so there might be even more.

Β· These are THOUGHTS and OBSERVATIONS so, feel free to say what you think (comments like β€œyou’re a Sanji tard” will be ignored).

Β· English is not my mother language, so there will probably be errors.

All these arguments would fit better on a video with the images, but I’m not a youtuber so you’ll have to stick with this. Enough talking, let’s begin:

Β· Luffy and Sanji, who are they: Although Oda is a great writer who tries to give space to everyone in his work, it is clear that some characters are more in-depth than others and we can see this even in the crew. The characters of the east blue are the most cared for by Oda and I invite you to watch Mr Morj’s video which delves into the matter better. So, the basis is these 5 characters. At first glance, it may seem that Sanji is the least touched character and the one with less affinity with Luffy (Zoro is the first companion and future best swordsman, Nami is the indispensable navigator and first woman of the crew, the one who will draw the map of the world and Usopp is the best friend, a cunning and brave warrior, but with the character of a coward), yet it is just the opposite. Luffy and Sanji are not united by a clear bond, which can be seen from the outside (in fact, since the Baratie we see them arguing). They are united by the way they behave, by what they believe. But let's start from the beginning, that is, from the Baratie restaurant. Luffy asks Sanji to join the crew when he sees him helping to feed Gin who was starving. So the first thing Luffy notices is Sanji's willingness to help those in need (and this is often seen in the manga). Luffy and Sanji (and possibly Franky) are the only two members of the crew who unconditionally lend themselves to helping those in need, even risking their lives. Sanji is often criticized for thinking only of women, but it is evident that this is not true and that that is just his obsession. Sanji has repeatedly seen crew members and non-crew members being saved, not caring about impositio

Would you consider me an anarchist?

Hi, posted on here a few times. I consider myself an anarcho-communist/anarcho-syndicalist/anarchist without adjectives, but online i have seen many a anarchist takes that tend to be insurrectionary / individualist leaning, that would exclude me from the label anarchist (I'm honestly a broad libertarian socialist in terms of an immediate goal of organizing society, if i lived in a council communist world i would see it as a major improvement that could be further improved upon). These anarchist takes are like "steal anything from anyone because morality is a spook" sort of shit to "anyone who believes in 'anarcho-police' isn't an anarchist" (which, i maybe projecting here, seems to reference some kind of community defense force which I'm in favor of, more on that later). So if i could gauge what this community thinks of my positions it would be helpful.

My positions are as follows:

  • I obviously believe in worker ownership of the means of production (ideally moneyless but it depends on the material conditions of each community what economic system they use) and the dissolution of the state replaced with a federated system of general assemblies and worker councils. Any individual and community can secede from the federations providing they manage themselves in a non hierarchical way (if a community wants to re-establish slavery the other communities have the right and duty to put and end to it)
  • I believe in large scale formal organisation with the usual delegates / imperative mandate sort of system to aid decision making and coordination between various communities and industries (opposed to insurrectionary anarchist if i understand it correctly). If a decision requires many communities approval (like building a massive road system or redesigning the electrical grid) the highest level of federation would decide with all power coming from the smaller communities
  • I believe a future anarchist society should have a "constitution" (more of like a program that states the intentions of the larger federation of communities) which would basically state "everyone is allowed (we all agree to affirm) liberty and autonomy of the individual insofar as the decisions made by the individual only affect the individual, any decision that tangibly affects another individual must be done with the consent of that individual, only those affected by a decision should decide." or something like that.
  • I believe in community defense, replacing police (of what liberals think t

Could be seen as a way of getting the validation he didn’t get from friends as a child on his own terms, for being special and intelligent enough to have discovered all these connections and go after the worst offender
