For those who donβt know, itβs trope, most common in horror movies, in which surviving characters that make it to the next installment have a high likelihood of being unceremoniously killed off quickly, sometimes off screen.
One of the most infamous examples comes the Alien franchise, particularly Alien 3, in which survivors Hicks and Newt from Aliens are gruesomely killed offscreen during the opening titles, leaving Ripley the sole survivor yet again.
This is kinda a series trope, as Dr. Shaw, the protagonist from Prometheus, is killed offscreen during the 10 year gap between that film and itsβ follow up film, Alien: Covenant.
What are some other examples of this? A Nightmare on Elm Street is particularly guilty of this, killing off a surviving character in three consecutive films.
Around 10 years ago, my late father bought me a Nintendo Dsi from Saudi Arabia. The Dsi had one of those rom cards on which the seller would download a bunch of games for kids, well-known ones, and more obscure ones.
I had that one game, an Olympic games one. I don't recall the name, but you played with teams of children multiple sports like cheerleading. A basic video game, and the most interesting part of it would be the 3d graphics I'd probably find shitty if I saw again today.
But one thing always stuck out to me with that game. If you went to "settings", there was an option called "sudden death" which you could enable or disable. I tried enabling it, disabling it, and playing with both settings... Nothing at all happened. Seemingly, this option just exists for no reason at all.
That's just a small thing that'll always stay in my mind as an unsolved mystery from childhood.

My best friends boyfriend passed away suddenly yestersay. He was 52. Was found collapsed in his home. He was on blood pressure meds and had a heart condition and was a recovering alcoholic. But, recently he was doing very well and looking at a bright future. But then this....so tonight I'm texting my son about "what's new" keeping our convo simple not to get wrapped up in his stupid comments. So I told him that her boyfriend died and she's devastated. His next comment is "well I don't know his status but you're going to see a lot of people drop dead. It's happening with the boosters. Did he have his booster? "
I didnt even bother answering. Can't people just die of natural causes anymore? A 52 year old with underlying conditions must have died from the vaccine...so frustrating and it actually makes me sad and disgusts me that he thinks like this....such a warped sense of thought.
Don't know if this is a spoiler for Smiling Friends considering it's in the actual title of the episode, but >!Charlie's death in the season finale actually caught me off guard with how abruptly it happened. Like, I knew the tree was going to fall on him and kill him, but not in the manner that it did. One second he's angrily chopping down the tree without looking where he's swinging the axe, and with only a single transitional frame at most, he's suddenly crushed into mush under said tree.!<
What are your examples of characters very suddenly dying without buildup?
