ELI5: Can someone explain to an American how succession works with the British Royal Family? We're raised to think Queens and Kings have children (princes and princesses), the oldest of whom inherit the throne. Yet Queen Elizabeth is married to a prince, and Charlotte is next in line to be queen?

The War for the British Succession 1901-1910

Timeline:

1840s - Queen Victoria, after marrying prince Albert of Saxe-Coberg & Gotha goes on to give birth to a daughter (Victoria), followed by a son (Albert, later Edward VII), followed by 7 more, which go on to marry into the Royal families of Europe, with the home of spreading British influence but also the blood dissorder known hemophilia - Victoria herself the source in this family. (In this alternate history, hemophilia will play a much bigger part in History)
1858 - Princes Victoria, eldest daughter marries the heir to the Prussian throne, the future Frederick III.

1859 - Princess Victoria gives birth to a son, the Future Wilhelm II.

1863 - The prince of Wales, Albert (Edward VIII) marries Alexandra of Denmark. They have two sons Albert Victor and George. All other children die very young from Hemophelia. Before his marriage Albert (Edward VIII) gives up his calim to the German duchy of Saxe-Coburg & Gotha.

1871 - Germany is unifed under after the Fracno Prussian war, making the king of Prussia the German Emporer.

1888 - After just months on the throne of the German Empire Frederick III dies, dealing a blow to the idea that Princess Victoria could influence Prussia/Germany to be more liberal. Her son, Willhelm II becomes German Emporer

1892 - The Prince of Wales' eldest son, Albert Victor dies, leaving George to be the second in line to the succession.

1893 - Alfred, second son and 4th child of Queen Victoria becomes Duke of Saxe-Coburg & Gotha, part of the new German Empire. After the Prince of Wales and his son, he is third in line to the throne. (OTL had him lower down due to Georges younger siblings)

1895 - The prince of Wales is assassinated by British redical communists. His carriage was bombed whilst leaving London to go shooting in the country. This causes a crack down on socialists in Great Britain, creating a more active working class and corresponding reactionary movement. This leaves the heir the the British thone as George, whose own children all died in infancy

May 1900 - Mayday worker protests in Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham and Glasgow are attacked by Police and British army units killing hundreds.

July 1900 - The Duke of Saxe-Coburg & Gotha dies and is succeded by his nephew, Charles Edward, son of Queen Victoria's 3rd son and 7th child, Prince Leopold.

Succession > Game of Thrones

"Prove me wrong" the sign would say if I bothered to do it in that meme format. But seriously, you guys are my people. Surely, you agree with me. The basis of comparison, I think is obvious: both are prestige dramas which largely focus on the wealthy and powerful battling each other for even more wealth and power; Both are HBO powerhouse soap operas with incredible casts and production values; both fit into a neatly cinematic 10-episode per season arc.

But the differences are night and day: the writing in Succession is far beyond anything Game of Thrones ever did, not even counting for the final season -- just the beat by beat dialogue in Succession is absolute gold and the story lines on are ripped from the headlines tabloid juiciness. Succession actually narrows the focus of the show on one family which does wonders for it: instead of being burdened by all this geeky lore we actually get to learn things about the characters and they develop into really interesting and complex people over time. And, maybe most importantly, Succession has a dark sense of humor at its heart. I know Game of Thrones had its laughs but Succession walks a line between comedy and drama like nothing I've ever seen before. It's really developed its own tone -- halfway between Veep-style farce and brooding, Madman-style prestige drama.

I know it's pointless to make these comparisons but this show deserves to occupy the place that Game of Thrones occupied in the public consciousness. It's got all the twisty plot elements that GoT had but, unlike GoT, it's never a chore to watch. It never has any wooden, expositional dialogue or extreme, disgusting violence just for the sake of its own brutality (unless you count Ken-W-A). It's just pure joy from start to finish.

Anyway, I wrote this when I realized that this is one of a very small number of shows I actually watch instead of just having it on while I'm looking at my phone.

If a British royal (e.g., Prince William) had an illegitimate child would the child have a place in line to the throne? How do you think the child would be treated

Say if had Prince William had a kid outside of marriage and then got married and has kids with a wife. will his previous kid become the queen, king eventually? or do they only count babies born into marriage as royals?. How do you also think the Queen and other royal family members or even the press would treat the child? or even more important how would they treat the mother of the child?. Would the mother of the child get support or custody?.

Germany should be able to put a Wittelsbach on the British throne

According to this video about who would be the modern day Jacobite King of Great Britain, the Houses of Stuart and Wittelsbach kind of merged into one entity.

In Kaiserreich, the German Empire is still a thing (of course), and the Kingdom of Bavaria is still a thing within the German Empire. I think that, if Germany defeats the Union of Britain, they should have an option to put Prince King Rupprecht of Bavaria on the throne of their newly created British puppet state.

Imagine that Magnus was successfully brought back to Terra to face censure. Assuming that his punishment was to be plugged into the Throne to manage the damage he did, would he be holding the rift shut entirely, or keeping it open so that the Emperor could take the field directly in the Webway war?

I'd love to know more about the lore surrounding this issue. My understanding is that the Burning of Prospero was due to a combination of Russ being manipulated by Horus into killing Magnus as opposed to capturing him, and Magnus deciding to resist at the last possible minute.

If he had in fact been brought back, it seems that common consensus is that his punishment would have been to take the Emperor's place on the Golden Throne β€” arguably his ultimate purpose anyways. First off, if anyone has any direct sources supporting this, that would be awesome, because I've never seen any.

Second, what would his "duties" have consisted of while sat on the Throne? Stabilizing the Webway entrance to allow the Emperor to rebuild the psychic wards that he broke? Holding it shut? Would he have had any involvement with the Astronomican?
