Per Wikipedia, Dean confirmed that it was in the works around the time of the reunion, but seeing as how that was nearly 7 years ago and theres been no progress heard, will it ever come?
I've seen some really nice Shinolas pop up around here recently, and every person who posts a picture of their watch has felt the need to qualify it with something like 'I know Shinola is not very popular around here' or something like that. So I thought I'd give a defense of Shinola and get a discussion going! My argument is as follows.
- Value is relative.
Probably the most common complaint levied at Shinola is that they make overpriced watches. Used this way, I don't think this term makes very much sense. When I think of something as 'overpriced', I'm thinking that a particular store has priced an item too high relative to its peers, or that some item with multiple available directly comparable products is out of step with its competitors. If I go to the store to buy bath towels, and I'm comparing a few brands of 100% cotton bath towels in the same size, made from organic cotton, etc. and there is no real difference between them other than the brand, I would expect the prices to be in the same ballpark. If one brand cost 30% more than the others, I would consider it overpriced. However, a comparison can't be made if for example the more expensive brand was the only one made from organic cotton, or was made with ethical labor, etc. In that case, the analysis shifts from one of comparable pricing to one of personal value. Even if the one brand cost 300% more than the others, supporting ethical labor practices might be worth that premium to me. It's not just about material cost, it's about how much any particular attribute is worth to the customer.
On that note, I agree that Shinola watches are expensive relative to the materials cost. But...what kind of criticism is that to levy only at Shinola? You can find an ETA movement automatic for $500, $5,000, and everything in between. Sometimes people pay more for something because it's exclusive, or it's a status symbol, or simply because they like it and are willing to pay the price. A Louis Vuitton bag does not cost anything close to its sales price to manufacture, but people buy it because they like it. It's not any more complicated or difficult to make than any other bag. I don't personally aspire to own a Rolex, but I don't begrudge anybody who buys one. A stainless steel Submariner is not worth $12,000 to me, but it's not 'overpriced', I just don't put $12,000 worth of value on owning one.
