What would you do as a DM if a cleric blatantly disobeys the code set by their deity?

If you're a player in my group, don't spoiler yourself :)

In the new campaign I'm creating, I'm having a bishop/archbishop NPC of Kelemvor as a potential BBEG as he seeks to become a lich using the ancient scripts he discovered.

If you haven't read about Kelemvor and his followers (which I do recommend), necromancy is THE biggest no-no in their religion and they have a dedicated knight class to fight undead. Practicing necromancy, let alone pursuing a lichdom, would be the biggest middle finger one can give to Kelemvor.

Warlock acquires their power by the pact they have signed, Wizard through their continuous learning, and Sorcerer (usually) being naturally born with it, and such. However, for the divine casters between Cleric and Paladin, IIRC their power comes from the faith and the oath they follow. While minor disobey may be recoverable, I can't imagine a blasphemy like this will go unanswered by Kelemvor himself.

Clearly, becoming a lich requires an incredibly potent spellcaster to begin with. However, if all of the bishop's power comes from their faith, how can the bishop avoid losing his power before the ritual is complete?

In your setting, how do your deities interact with the physical world and its inhabitants?

Additional details you could include:

  1. Are the gods natural or artificial? Simply, did they exist from the onset of realities creation or are they manifestations of collective belief in a higher power?
  2. Are they incorporeal or corporeal? Do they walk the land as men or drift as amorphous entities in the aether? If they possess bodies, can they cross breed with mortals to produce demigods? If so, what is the opinion of both gods and mortals of this?
  3. What happens when a god dies? Are the gods mortal (killable)? If not, are they outright invulnerable to harm or do they simply reform after a certain period has elapsed?
  4. Do the gods have holy places, relics or artifacts? How important are these items to the gods, such as can the god only interact via a medium? Like a sword, chalice or river?
  5. Do most people revere the divine, or are they reviled? Was it always this way, or did general opinion shift over time? If so, was there a singular event that caused the switch or was it a continuous series of actions or lack of actions that spurred?
  6. How are the gods' traits defined? Is it a reflection of the state of the world, is it a product of their worshippers' belief of who or what they are, are they sapient individuals that define their own identity as humans do?

Post a description of a deity from your setting, then reply to someone else’s Deity post and design a religion/mythology/set of shared beliefs based on their deity’s description.

Title. Don’t feel restricted in any way by the wording of the prompt; the religion can be as organized or disorganized as you want, it could be a loosely held set of beliefs and traditions spread across many tribes or peoples across a wide area where different interpretations are perfectly normal, or it could be a tightly controlled and vindictive cult which punished harshly even a single step out of line. It’s all up to you! Just please don’t make the deity descriptions too long.

In my experience, these are the best kind of prompts, since they get people reading each others’ posts more often. I’d like to get around to posting more of these types of interactive prompts in the future.

What are some deities associated with libraries? And what are the most famous libraries of the Golarion campaign setting (especially but not limited to libraries on the material plane)?

One of my players asked, "Is there a library god in Pathfinder? Or a library of Alexandria type myth/place?"

For the deities, I pointed him toward this list of deities and suggested searching for the word "knowledge" as an imprecise but fast way of finding some candidates. Obviously this will return lots of false positives because "library" is more specific than "knowledge," but I at least wanted to tell him how I'd begin to narrow the list down.

For the libraries themselves, I told him to check out Shyka’s Archives, the Fallen Fastness, the Great Library of Harmonious Scripture, and the Akashic Record (all mentioned in passing by Tabris at the end of Concordance of Rivals). I also suggested looking up the Immortal Ambulatory, the Arcanamirium, the Magaambya, the Acadamae, the White Grotto, the Esoteric Order of the Palatine Eye, the Pathfinder Society, and Axis to see if any of them sounded like they'd have the sort of library that'd work for whatever idea is sprouting in his head.

But I only know the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Paizo's lore because usually I just homebrew everything. (This is actually the first time I'll be using Golarion.) I also know that many of you have seemingly encyclopedic recollection of the campaign setting. So, what comes to mind for you all?

The Human’s Unusual Deity

Many millennia ago, quite by accident, a God was created.

This God saved the galaxy from an immense threat long since lost to history, and then vanished, their task complete.

For thousands of years afterwards, various groups have tried to re-summon this, or indeed any, God, slowly coming closer and closer to learning how this summoning came to pass. Some wished for one for knowledge, others for an all-powerful conqueror, and still others for a saviour, but no Gods ever came.

The esoteric conditions behind it were painstakingly narrowed down over the course of thousands of years of galactic history. It required many billions of people all believing in the same thing, in the same way, and a fervent desire for it the deity to be, or become, real.

However, Gods are always different things to different people, befitting of their many aspects.

For instance, a God of the oceans and seas brings bountiful schools of fish just as they can cause flooding and storms, or a God that deals with war can be a stalwart defender of one region, and a death bringer to another. Different people can believe more so in one or some aspects than others, and it’s rare than even a handful of people have the exact same beliefs and view their deities in the exact same way, which is required for the summoning.

Because of this issue, it’s long been considered impossible to fulfill these conditions, as the unknown number of billions of people all have to believe the same thing, in the same way. The scientific community has since shelved the idea, believing the occurrence to be a one-time thing that would likely never again be replicated.

But one species did so, and they did so completely by accident.

Humanity had been one of the smoother species to integrate. Their love of new experiences and wide assortment of skills they’re able to learn and master made them spread far and wide. Soon everywhere from the glittering council worlds to backwater pirate dens had at least a few families of humans living among them. Their ability to survive in almost any climate led to them exploding in population, and soon they were regularly in the top few listings whenever population surveys were conducted.

And it was here we began to see the early stages of the manifestation.

Human civilisation had a long history, and through the various empires that rose and fell an untold number of Gods had worshipers. But one entity endured even as the Humans broke through into the vast reaches of the wide

What was your first sign from a deity reaching out to you?

For those of you who work with deities, what was your first sign from a deity reaching out to you? Mine was twice with Aphrodite (once in a dream, once with a statue turning its back to me).

Long backstory for those interested: I was first getting into Paganism and was at a metaphysical shop checking out the statues. I picked up one of Aphrodite and read the description that said "love goddess". I made a comment out loud that I was "looking for something more than just a love goddess". I picked up Freya and noticed her description said "love and war goddess". I went home and did more research on those two and decided I would get Freya the next day. That night I had a dream where Aphrodite seemed to be doing sort of a humble brag "I am Aphrodite Areia. I am more than just a love goddess". I googled that name when I woke up and my mind was blown at that fact that Aphrodite Areia was in fact a real name in history (the warlike version of Aphrodite that was eventually overshadowed by the more popular Aphrodite Ourania). Keep in mind I grew up in a small town in Mississippi. I never came across Greek mythology in school and never read it, so it wasn't being dug up from old memories. So I purchased both statues and set up alters for both.

I came across a perfume bottle shaped like a golden apple in my fragrance collection ( Fleur Defendue Lolita Lempicka perfume). I saw on the description booklet for Freya that apples was one of the things she was associated with, so I left the golden apple bottle at her alter. I woke up and saw that the Aphrodite statue had turned around so that her back was to me. I know I didn't do that, and nobody else did because I live alone. I started frantically reading up on Aphrodite to see what I could've done to offend her, and came across to golden apple story with Aphrodite, Helen, and Paris. I apologized to her for my ignorance and put the apple on her alter (and explained to Freya that it meant more to Aphrodite, so that I'd give it to her if she didn't mind). I never got any negative feedback from Freya on that thank goodness. But Aphrodite and I have been close ever since. She's my favorite because she is the most responsive of the deities I follow.

If YOU were a priest character existing in the setting, which deity would you follow and why.

Before getting into my choice, I'd like to clarify the prompt. This is not asking what deity you would chose for the mechanical bonuses provided, or what you think would be fun to role-play as. This is asking what deity you would personally like to worship if you were a priest who lived in the game's setting. Your choice should be based off your own personal feelings, beliefs, and/or philosophy.

Now that that's out of the way, let me give my pick; Berath. This is due to my own personal understanding of the deity, and what is demanded of Berath's followers.

Berath's dislikes: people who mess with the Cycle and by extension souls, people who acts with unnecessary cruelty, and people who are passionate(interpreted as people who acts based on emotional impulse), weapons other than great swords and maces.

Berath's likes: people who kill people who mess with the Cycle and by extension souls, people who act rationally and don't allow emotion to impact their decisions, by who are stoic and know not to run their mouth, greatsword and maces.

That's a pretty short and undemanding list in my eyes. The amount of relative freedom granted to followers of the seemingly foreboding god of the cycle of life and death is appealing compared to other deities. Even when compared to a "good" god like Eothas who demands that his followers be honest and kind-even if it is to their detriment-I would much rather serve Berath. For me Berath's dispassionate attitude towards life and death is just good sense, compared to the bleeding heart philosophy of Eothas, the seething hatred of Skaen, the burning wrath of Magran, or whatever the hell Wael's deal is. If I were to live by the rules of any deity, Berath's rules are clear-cut, and simple to follow. The Cycle is a far more compelling phenomenon to serve the maintenance of than that which any other deity is centered around. If nothing else, self-interest in your rebirth ought to be sufficient motivation to venerate Berath. There is no defying Berath, but servitude is your own choice. One I would recommend making. If you encounter the Pallid Knight, do not flee her or you will merely be led by the Usher into your grave. I'd like to end on this quote, and I hope you can see the appeal of serving The Twinned God.

"*Berath is the god that makes life end in death, and it is also the god that makes death end in life. Berath...deserves our prayers, for it has given us the promise of life's eternal renewal".- from "Many Faces of B

What are some ways a deity might show displeasure?

A god's influence on the material plane and how they can affect it is very vague in D&D. I'd love to see ways that you guys have had a deity show they're not happy with a PC's actions without just smiting them. Any ideas?
