TIL: In 1958 Great Lakes freighter Carl D. Bradley sank with the loss of 33 lives. Over the objections of witnesses who survived the sinking, the Coast Guard concluded the ship did not break in two, shielding its owners from liability. In 1997 the shipwreck was discovered in 2 sections 90 feet apart

On November 10th, 1975, the Edmund Fitzgerald lake freighter sank to the bottom of Lake Superior in a large storm. I have made a MOC of her in memory.

[WP] On November 11th, 2676, a downright ancient lake freighter pulled into port in Sandusky. Her dirty smoke stacks and ancient design contrasted heavily with the modern nuclear freighters, and she drew quite a spectacle. Another thing that brought attention was her name: SS Edmund Fitzgerald.

So I decided to build a couple of Great Lakes Freighters... I'm pretty happy with the detailing so far, but I'm on the fence when it comes to the superstructure of both ships...

My first attempt at a large grid ship that didn't look like a tortoise. Was going for the iron ore freighters on the Great Lakes for inspiration. After finding that she entirely looked like a dong, and the bridge was cramped I expanded it and increased the sides a bit. Now it looks even worse π

The freighter in this picture is called the Arthur M. Anderson. This freighter was the last to have radio contact with the Edmund Fitzgerald which sank on November 10, 1975 in Lake Superior. The Fitzgerald was made famous in song by Gordon Lightfoot in 1976. I took this pic in 2016 on Lake St Clair.

Lake Freighters and looking for employment as a first timer.
I live in Chicago but I've been spending most of the pandemic helping my family out in Vermont. I'm about to move back to the city and wanted to look into work on the lakes, but don't have any licensing. I've gotten conflicting answers just googling but I'm happy to do hard work. Things would be different if I had to spend a year on licensing and certification. How possible is it to find an entry level job in great lakes shipping, and what do you need to do it?

This was my Great Grandpaβs board, he was a sailor on the Great Lakes for over 40 years, from the 1920βs to 1960βs. He eventually made his way up to Captain and took command of one of the largest freighters on the waters at that time (a $6,000,000 ship in 1961!).
