Joseph Wiseman would have turned 103 years old today. He played Dr. No and so he is the prototype for every Bond villain.

Joseph Wiseman's makeup as Dr. No?

I've read makeup was used to give him a more Chinese look as Dr. No but what exactly did they do? It looks like they put some prosthetic eyelids over his own (already fairly hooded) to make them even more hooded/Asian looking, but I feel like there's something else. I can't quite put my finger on it. His face looks and moves very tightly, very similar the method of tightly pulling back the hairline to "lift" the face (a technique used, for example, on Cate Blanchett in some 'younger' scenes in Benjamin Button.) Does anyone know exactly what they did for his makeup?

I have come up with a trade from every NBA team for CJ McCollum so I can gauge his trade value.

So in the most recent Post-game Thread I saw a lot of "TRADE CJ REEEEEEEEEEE"-comments, and I got curious. The trade machine is the most obvious way to satisfy this type of curiosity, but its results lack context, depth and logic. This is why I am coming to you, the reddit community, to ask the fans what trades make sense. To Portland fans: Which of these trades, if any, do you like? To all other fans: Do you like your proposed trade? If no, what would you change? Do you even want CJ on your team?

Some key info: McCollum is 29 years old, 6 ft 3, and is under contract until the 23/24 season. He will make 31m next year, 33m the year after, and 36m in the final year of his contract. CJ is a nice little ball player, but lacks a consistent 3-point shot and has been called both a chair and a traffic cone on defense. He is rather adept at creating his own shot, but these shots are not well-liked by advanced analytics (Nerds). This has led to a very up-and-down career so far. I recall a playoff series against the Nuggets 2 years ago where he was actually unstoppable and consistently killed them from mid-range. I also recall a playoff series against the Nuggets 0 years ago where he could get absolutely nothing going and consistently killed his team's offense from mid-range. In my humble opinion it would be fair to consider CJ the slightly worse in every way older sister of Bradley Beal (the girl you actually want but can't have). So what is the value of McCollum? In order to get to the (very shallow) bottom of this, I have gone into the NBA Trade Machine and mostly tried to make a trade work salary-wise, but kept in my mind that both teams (Side note: Mostly the non-Portland team, though. I'm pretty sure they're the sellers, most other teams are not buyers) would have to be willing to make the trade.

I consider these trades the framework for actual discussion, I know most of them are not realistic as currently constructed

IMPORTANT: About halfway through I realized I should look into the amount of years left on the contracts involved. Please correct me if I've missed some of these.

Now that that's out of the way, here we go:

  • ATL: Gallinari + Reddish (Possibly a pick). I have no idea what's happening with Reddish, but I feel like Atlanta (rightfully) prefers Huerter over him anyway.

  • BOS: Smart + Langford + T. Thompson. Only thing that works without including Brown, Tatum or Walker. Boston's not giving up Brown/Tatum, and Kemba + Dame is just pla

it rained today so i stayed in and redrafted the entire league onto 42 teams (using WS/48 for the starters and total minutes played for the benches).

i drew from a bucket paper slips numbered 1-42 for draft order of the first 5 rounds; and then for the bench draft, for some reason i decided it would be "fun" or "fair" to uhh... ok so what i did was i looked at who in real life was 42nd in the NBA in total minutes played, and the team that player went to in my league got the first pick in the 6th round. 41st got the second pick, 40th got the third and so on until i got to a player who was on a team that already had a pick, in which case i looked at who was 43rd in the real NBA in total minutes... (why?!)

also i did all this pretty much by eyeballing it so if i left an All-Star completely out of the league, whoopsies. for example, i forgot to include Oakland in the bench draft so i just gave them a bunch of guys named Cassius, Thon Maker, the guy Bill Simmons wanted the Celtics to draft, etc... but serves them right for learning absolutely nothing from the TMac debacle and drafting Mason Plumlee one spot ahead of Luka

why are there no NY or LA teams? because this is a visualization of another post i madehttps://www.reddit.com/r/nbadiscussion/comments/ngbc21/postlebron_leagues_i_should_probably_wait_til_the/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3and this is why teams only have a bench of 6 players. maybe if it rains again i will do one of the superteam league using some other random columns from bballref....

i noticed only 43.8% of you watching are subscribed so be sure to hit like and subscribe and turn on notifications, it really helps out the channel a ton. now that we got all that out of the way, here's the teams....

I'M NOT ABSOLUTELY OPPOSED TO THE IDEA (KEYWORD) OF TANKING ITSELF, BUT ASKING OUR YOUTH TO DO IT IS DISRESPECTFUL!!!

THE PISTONS' ISSUE HAS BEEN TALENT EVALUATION RATHER THAN DRAFT POSITIONING

Here's the thing, as much as any other Pistons fan, I am ready for us to draft a star! I love the players often mentioned as the top 5 for our team, but there are many ways to skin a cat! Many people seem to be upset because the Pistons almost never get top 5 picks despite their record, and so now, because we are supremely close to having one this year, it seems that the popularly growing reasoning for us "not drafting any superstars" is now directed towards our draft positions in years past. However, draft positioning has NOT been the problem for the Pistons!

Did all of the trauma posts, memes, videos, etc. about missing out on Paul George (#7 vs. #10), Kemba, Klay, Khawi, and Jimmy (#8 vs. #9, #11, #15, and #30), McCullum and Giannis (#8 vs. #10 and #15), Devin Booker (#8 vs. #13), and Donovan Mitchell (#12 vs. #15) all of a sudden go out of the window!? These are superstars that the Pistons could have had without having top 4 lottery positioning in the past few years!!

WE HAVE A POTENTIALLY ELITE TALENT EVALUATOR IN TROY WEAVER

Fast forward to now and the Pistons seem to potentially have an elite talent evaluator running the show along with a coach who knows how to pull more potential out of young guys than other coaches in some cases. Sure, the Pistons passed on these superstars but tell me this, do you believe that TROY WEAVER would miss out on these same guys? Not only has Troy Weaver had a hand in OKC drafting Westbrook; which people called a huge reach from where they drafted him, but he also had a hand in their team drafting Harden and Ibaka.

This year's draft class is one of the most highly touted in years! Last year, in what was considered a weak draft class he has already found 2 gems who are also 1st Team All-Rookie candidates in Saddiq Bey and Isaiah "Beef Stew" Stewart. People scoffed at the selection of Beef Stew with the #16 pick that he maneuvered his way back into the draft for, but yet, he had the eye to see that this young Pistons star (amongst the fans that is) could really play some ball and we're all now anxious to see how his career plays out. Saddiq Bey somehow dropped to #19 and he grabbed him. Saddiq, Weaver's 3rd 1st round pick, is looking like he could be the best player of the bunch and a potential player that other teams' fans are talking about their teams passing on in the same manner that Pistons fans talk about the Pistons passing

Official /r/nba Power Rankings #8 (04.12.2021)

26/30 rankers reporting this week. /R/NBA's Power Rankings are published every two weeks which is a bit different from most rankings. Other than that we rank the teams the same way as our competition. If write ups are left blank the team rep decided not to submit. We encourage any user to fill in the blanks in the comment section. Rankings were supposed to be completed prior to Today's games.

# Team Ξ” Record Comment
1 Jazz -- 40-13 Despite producing 3 of their 4 worst games this year for 3P% in the past week, the Utah Jazz were still able to complete their latest 5 game stretch with a winning record and a margin of victory of +13.8 points. Donovan Mitchell has been getting buckets with 120 points in his last 3 contests and Utah’s home win streak is now up to 24 consecutive games. Of their final 19 opponents, only 5 (including the injured Lakers twice) currently have a W-L record over .500. Utah’s quest to secure the number one seed is well on track and with playoffs just around the corner, the team will start to really refine their game plan going forward and ensure that their stars are well rested and prepared for the games that really matter.
2 Suns +2 37-15 I'm ready for the playoffs to start now.
3 Nets -1 36-17 The Nets role players definitely play worse when Harden isn't on the floor and dictating the tempo of the floor. However, it helps having good passing big men in LMA and Blake to ease the load off Kyrie and KD. KD's handle has been a little rusty coming back, just like it was early in the season but Nets fans should expect it to improve as he gets back in the rhythm. His shooting touch is still the best in the league from that mid-range area and we'll see how the Nets fare without their lead playmaker for a few more games as Harden's hamstring heals.
4 Clippers +1 37-18 Rondo was an amazing pickup. While most people will meme that he won't do anything in the regular season, the real power he provides is his BBIQ. We just needed a passer who can control the flow of the offense, and with all the offensive weapons we have, Rondo is perfect for that, and Jackson is starting to ramp up as well. Unfortunately, Ibaka is still out and PatBev might miss some playoff games, so the lineup is a little messed up, but the Clippers look

Potential Rest Of Season Value:

Jalen Mcdaniels (11.3% rostered ESPN)

  • One of the players on the hornets who have stepped up big time due to injuries on the team
  • Just broke out this week, prior to this week he had only played in 23 games and averaged only 10.5 minutes
  • Now looks to be like a pivotal part of the hornets rotation after starting the past two games in place of Bismack Biyombo
  • Fits much better for the hornets small ball playstyle
  • In his last three games as a starter he is averaging 30 minutes a game, 16 points, 5 rbs, 3.3 asts, 1.3 stls, and 1 block a game
  • Had usage rates of 18.6%, 17.9%, and 16.7%
  • Will play a huge role for the hornets while, Ball, Hayward, Washington, and Monk are out
  • Will make an argument to still get minutes even when some of those guys come back
  • Brings a unique and helpful stat profile

Malachi Flynn (22.85% rostered ESPN)

  • With Lowry out for a little longer and Vanvleet missing games as well, Flynn has stepped into a much larger role for the raptors
  • Will likely remain the backup PG for the raptors even when Lowry and Vanvleet are full health as the raptors traded both Terrance Davis and Norman Powell at the deadline
  • Over his last 5 games he is averaging 34 mins, 14.4 points, 6.4 assists, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.8 steals
  • Had a season high 20 points on Saturday
  • His usage rate has been over 15% in all 5 games with an 18.8% average
  • Not the most efficient scorer but he makes up for it with his other peripheral stats
  • Was the raptors first round pick in the 2020 draft, so he will get a good chance from the raptors to grow and keep producing the rest of the season

Fantasy Basketball Simulator Tool (Playoffs Prediction Model)

Hey all, I wanted to share a project I've been working on for a while, which is to build a model for simulating game stats for fantasy basketball. Here's are some examples of the model being used.

Example 1: Matchup Simulation

Assume we have the following teams in a weekly matchup.

  • Team 1: "Ja Morant", "Malachi Flynn", "Myles Turner", "Joe Ingles", "Nicolas Batum", "Duncan Robinson", "Cory Joseph", "James Harden", "Kevin Huerter", "Patrick Williams", "Kyle Lowry", "Kevin Love", "Khris Middleton"
  • Team 2: "D'Angelo Russell", "Dillon Brooks", "Bradley Beal", "Norman Powell", "Keldon Johnson", "Larry Nance Jr.", "James Wiseman", "Rudy Gobert", "Karl-Anthony Towns", "Jonas Valanciunas", "Paul Millsap", "Clint Capela", "Donte DiVincenzo"

The model then simulates 10,000 H2H matchups between the two teams, tracking weekly category wins as well as overall matchup wins. The model arrives at the following results:

Win Rate of Team 1 vs Team 2:

Category Win Rate
Overall 0.2309
Points 0.0001
3s 0.9628
Rebounds 0.0
Assists 1.0
Steals 0.4344
Blocks 0.0146
Turnovers 0.5089
Ft % 0.8971
Fg % 0.0793

This information is quite useful as it shows which categories are most contested in a given matchup and which categories decide the overall outcome. In this given matchup, both Team 1 and Team 2 should prioritize streaming/trading for players who are strong in turnovers, steals, and percentages. On the other hand, they should ignore points, 3s, rebounds, assists, and blocks as those categories are relatively set in stone.

Example 2: Playoff Simulation

This can be extended to analyze all matchups in a given playoff bracket. I ran this model on my current fantasy league playoff schedule with the following results (1000 bracket simulations):

Team Win Rate Runner-Up Rate
Seed 1 0.692 0.203
Seed 2 0.073 0.355
Seed 3 0.188 0.318
Seed 4 0.024 0.018
Seed 5 0.020 0.043
Seed 6 0.003 0.063

Example 3: Trade Simulation

Perhaps the most helpful use of the model is to simulate how a trade improves/hurts a team relative to your specific league. Here is what that looks like. The chart shows the win rates of both team 1 and team 2 against the rest of their league before and after a given trade (post-trade denoted with *). This is more useful than simply comparing z-score rankings as the model takes into account league-specific circumstances like p

DAD JOKES ARE NOT DIRTY.

Go post NSFW jokes somewhere else. If I can't tell my kids this joke, then it is not a DAD JOKE.

If you feel it's appropriate to share NSFW jokes with your kids, that's on you. But a real, true dad joke should work for anyone's kid.

Mods... If you exist... Please, stop this madness. Rule #6 should simply not allow NSFW or (wtf) NSFL tags. Also, remember that MINORS browse this subreddit too? Why put that in rule #6, then allow NSFW???

Please consider changing rule #6. I love this sub, but the recent influx of NSFW tagged posts that get all the upvotes, just seem wrong when there are good solid DAD jokes being overlooked because of them.

Thank you,

A Dad.

I am currently in the hospital. I had a back operation yesterday. The surgical nurse came in my room and started asking questions about my back. She asked me if I had any falls during the last year. I responded just one. It was after summer.

She laughed and said in 20 years of doing this she never was told that joke.

My son accidentally handed me a dad joke on a platter and it was glorious.

This happened a few years ago when my son was 6ish. When my kids hurt themselves and it doesn’t look serious I always do the β€œwe might have to amputate that bruised hand” shtick with them. I’ve done it enough that they now roll their eyes.

So, my son got hit lightly in the face with a rubber ball. It wasn’t a hard hit and I could tell he was more upset by the shock of it rather than the pain. So I say β€œlooks like we will have to amputate your nose.” To which he replies β€œthen how will I smell?” And I say β€œterrible!”

It was my greatest dad joke ever. I felt like I could retire after that.

Best game from every NBA team starters + 6th and 7th man this season

Today is one day rest from the NBA so I thought someone would find interesting to see some highlights of their favourite players.

I chose minimum of 30 games played (over whole season, not only for team player currently plays for). I probably made some errors in lineups for few teams, or missed some game that was better than one I listed, but here are the stats :

Atlanta Hawks:

PG Trae Young: vs Nuggets - 35 pts, 6 reb, 15 ast, 10/19 fg, 4/7 3pt, 11/13 ft in 36 minutes. Highlights

SG Kevin Huerter: vs Pacers - 23 pts, 9 reb, 3 ast, 2 stl, 8/12 fg, 5/7 3pt in 40 minutes. Highlights

SF Bogdan Bogdanovic: vs Spurs - 28 pts, 5 reb, 5 ast, 2 blk, 12/17 fg, 4/5 3pt in 45 minutes. Highlights

PF John Collins: vs Warriors - 38 pts, 12 reb, 2 ast, 14/19 fg, 4/5 3pt, 6/7 ft in 34 minutes. Highlights

C Clint Capela: vs Pistons - 27 pts, 26 reb, 2 ast, 5 blk, 10/18 fg, 7/12 ft in 39 minutes. Highlights

6M Danilo Gallinari: vs Celtics - 38 pts, 6 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl, 13/16 fg, 10/12 3pt in 33 minutes. Highlights

7M Lou Williams: vs Cavaliers - 30 pts, 2 reb, 10 ast, 10/22 fg, 2/5 3p, 8/8 ft in 32 minutes. Highlights

Boston Celtics:

PG Kemba Walker: vs Pacers - 32 pts, 3 reb, 6 ast, 10/19 fg, 4/10 3pt, 8/8 ft in 33 minutes. Highlights

SG Marcus Smart: vs Timberwolves - 24 pts, 6 reb, 8 ast, 2 stl, 7/12 fg, 4/8 3pt, 6/7 ft in 41 minutes. Highlights

SF Jaylen Brown: vs Grizzlies - 42 pts, 5 reb, 4 ast, 15/21 fg, 7/10 3pt, 5/6 ft in 29 minutes. Highlights

PF Jayson Tatum: vs Spurs - 60 pts, 8 reb, 5 ast, 20/37 fg, 5/7 3pt, 15/17 ft in 45 minutes. Highlights
