I just read Dewey's Ethics of Democracy and was pleasantly surprised by how much I agreed with most of his views, and how it seemed to me to be a good basis to build a demsoc political phylosophy upon.
I wondered if others felt the same, and if you guys have criticisms of his work, or think of other things I could read in the same vein.
title. I would like to research and look into pragmatic philosophy for a paper in order to tie it into stoics (basically Seneca) and Iβve read Dewey is the most well-known pragmatist.
I know this is a long shot, but I'm wondering if anyone has access to resources/articles by Tom Bratter, the monster that founded JDA. I'm writing about it and trying to show some of the batshit insanity that occurred there... I remember when the school still existed, they had lots of articles Bratter wrote on their website. I've been able to find some links, but a lot of them are "Request access" and I haven't been approved. So just thought I'd check. Thanks :)
Hi friends, I will soon be starting a PhD-position on the rationality of group opinion formation processes. It's a mixture of formal social epistemology and social psychology, and I'm quite excited about it.
In preparation, I'm trying to get some (very) broad background reading in. The topics I will be researching (e.g. polarisation, opinion fragmentation, democratic deliberation, etc.) have been talked about again and again from many different perspectives, and I'm just trying to get a feeling for what's out there.
This lands me with John Dewey. I know nothing about Dewey. I have, however, a hunch (possibly due to my undergraduate forays into Rorty) that there might be some good stuff for me in Dewey's work. The question is: where to start? If I can read one of Dewey's books, which one should I read, given my interests?

Hi everyone. My name is Ciara (pronounced like Keira Knightley, but the Knightley is silent) and I am a survivor of the troubled teen industry. I was at Open Sky and the John Dewey Academy in 2014-2015. I'm very grateful to have found this subreddit, it's been so validating of my experiences. Up until recently I only thought of them as "whack," and to finally acknowledge them as what they were really wereβtraumatizing and abusiveβhas been helping me heal.
An incredible article came out about JDA earlier this year (https://thenewsstation.com/jda-john-dewey-academy-boarding-school-from-hell/) detailing some of the horrific practices. The current principal responded that "new Dewey" is nothing like that.... which I think is totally untrue. I want to write an article about my time there, and challenge the headmaster's idea that the school is currently devoid of any abuse. From what I know, they still have punishments like "sitting the chair" which involve sleep deprivation and isolation, and are in no world "therapeutic." I'd really like to talk to more recent students to hear what it's been like, as I was there about 7 years ago. If anyone would be willing to talk with me please reach out. <3
I might have a seminar on John Dewy this upcoming semester so I was curious to hear hear everyone's opinion of John Dewy! What were his basic ideas? I know he is famous in the educational sphere, but did he have any non-education related works/ideas? Thanks!
