Driving In Snow Tips

I'm surprised nothing like this has been posted before. But let's just jump into it.

Automatic DO NOT DRIVE

  • If you don't have winter tires.
    • Self explanatory.
  • Sport / show vehicles.
    • These vehicles are not even made for normal driving. Seeing videos of people taking low ass lambos out into the snow is just asking to get stuck.
  • If you can honestly self assess and say you panic under pressure, aren't good at driving patiently, or find it difficult to maintain space between other cars.
    • Note, I'm not gatekeeping driving to "good drivers" only. Even if you know you're not a great driver, as long as you can keep those three aspects in control you can do it cautiously.
    • Even if you're a "good driver" but you cannot help yourself in these three aspects, too bad. Don't drive in the snow.

Winter Tires ARE NOT Magic

Some of you non-real winter drivers have this fairy tale belief that if you just stick winter tires on your car you can just drive normally at the speed limit now and you'll be fine. WRONG. So wrong.

On bad roads you should be driving 15 to 20 km below normal speed. On good ones you can do around 5 to 10 km less. This is with winter tires. This is not me being a conservative wuss, this is growing up in southern Alberta where the roads are way wider, everyone has big winter tires and 4wd, born driving in snow and people STILL adhere to these rules. Mother nature will always win.

Winter tires do not magically enable you to suddenly brake on ice, or take turns at high speeds.

General Driving Tips

These tips will apply to almost all situations. I'll list further terrain and road differences below.

Preparation

  • Plug in your car if you can. This is important for colder nights, especially electric cars. You guys aren't used to it here, but it will help older/weaker cars (or even electric cars) start up if the night was particularly cold (start thinking about it past -10 C).
  • Brush all snow off your car. It's easy to think "I just have to clear snow off the windows and I'm good." Nope. You must clear all snow off all windows, head/tail lights AND any snow that is resting at least half an inch. Doesn't matter where it is.
    • People often talk about the snow falling off and pummeling other cars, which is true.
    • Visibility is honestly a bigger issue. People underestimate how much a little square of snow on that back window can screw up your blind spots. Or how a sudden brake can shift snow to now

Russell went on a 6.5 hour Periscope binge. Here's what he said/revealed:

So Russell was on Periscope for the better part of six and a half hours last night. We know he loves to hear himself talk, but to be on until 3 AM answering questions from fans and sharing stories is pretty cool. He had some pretty interesting stuff to say and I'm going to try and list everything he talked about as accurately as possible. I'm throwing in a bunch of stuff where Russell is being Russell, so bear with me:

  • Danielle's vote off in HvV was going to be Rupert until he switched his vote at tribal. He said despite what was shown before tribal, he was still planning to vote for Rupert. He also said the editing before hand was manipulated to show that he was playing Parvati and Danielle against each other when it was Danielle who came back after the challenge freaking out that it was her going home (even though it was going to be Rupert). He said that she was getting super paranoid for no reason and went running around talking to everyone. He wasn't targeting Danielle until he thought for sure if she went back to camp that night she'd blow his game up, so when everything started to unfold at tribal he decided then and there he couldn't let her stay. He told Jerri, Rupert and Colby to vote Danielle, which is what we saw.
  • Claims to have talked with Jefra (S28) quite a bit following her season and that her boyfriend discovered their convos on her phone and got really upset. Said it wasn't long after that she was engaged (lol).
  • He said Erik's jury speech in Samoa was edited out of order. Erik apparently went first, but they showed him last to obviously sell to the audience that each juror was convinced to vote Natalie and thus justify Russell's loss.
  • He thinks Angie (S25) and Cydney (S32) are the two hottest women to ever play.
  • Evel Dick Donato (BB8+BB13), Holly Hoffman (S21), Ryan Opray (S7) and Kyle Jason (S32) all logged in and had some back and forth with Russell for a little bit. Cool to see.
  • He is rooting for Cirie and Troyzan in particular to do well on S34.
  • He wasn't asked to return for S34 and said the last time he was asked to return was for BvW but wouldn't.
  • Said that he put a hit out on Sandra for S34 (lol). Added that whenever him and Sandra meet up in Florida for charity stuff they are actually pretty friendly and cordial. But when it comes to Survivor, forget about it. He said if she wins a third time he will bow down and call her the greatest Survivor ever. As critical as he is of her g

What contract will Malik Monk command in free agency? He is an UFA after the season and it is likely the Lakers cannot offer more than the tax MLE (6.2m/year).

Monk is 23 years old and currently on a minimum contract.

Over his last 12 games, he's averaging 17/4/3 on 52/49/88 (68 TS%) in 31 mpg.

Over the season he is averaging 12/3/2 on 48/41/84 (61 TS%) in 26 mpg.

Due to Monk signing a 1-year deal, LA does not hold his Bird rights. It is likely the Lakers can only offer him up to the tax MLE (6.2m).

Source

> What may help the Lakers: The 2022 offseason projects to be the tightest in recent memory. Only four teams project to have substantial cap space: the Orlando Magic, San Antonio Spurs, Memphis Grizzlies and Pistons. Those franchises may not prioritize Monk, but much of the league will have the non-taxpayer mid-level exception (NTMLE) at about $10.1 million. The Lakers might have to use their own NTMLE to pay Monk, but that produces another problem.

> If a team uses its NTMLE, it locks in a hard cap for the season. That would limit the Lakers to a total payroll of about $152 million. The Lakers will climb well above that total if Russell Westbrook opts into his final year at $47.1 million, as expected. With Monk at $10.1 million, the team would easily reach an illegal $165 million. While the equation would shift if Westbrook opts out, that's a significant long shot.

> Instead, the Lakers should be limited to their taxpayer mid-level exception at about $6.2 million, which would not trigger a hard cap.

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Official /r/nba Power Rankings #4 (12.13.2021) - Christmas is Coming

28/30 rankers reporting this week. /R/NBA's Power Rankings are published every two weeks which is a bit different from most rankings. Other than that we rank the teams the same way as our competition. If write ups are left blank the team rep decided not to submit. We encourage any user to fill in the blanks in the comment section.

# Team Ξ” Record Comment
1 Suns +1 21-4 The Phoenix Suns have lost just one game in the last 45 days and it was on the second night of a back to back. This year's Suns team is a better, deeper, and more dynamic version of last year's Finals team. The team has been sensational, carried by Devin Booker, who after a slow start due to a short offseason and a late COVID battle which resulted in missing the majority of the preseason, was averaging 25/5/4 on 48/47/84 shooting over his last 14 games before leaving hurt against the Warriors. The losses will come sooner or later but this team should have silenced any doubters that last year's run was any sort of fluke.
2 Warriors -1 21-5 Curry has been trying to break the record every night since the Spurs game. He's averaging 5 makes on 15 attempts. Not great. The Portland game was maybe the least interesting game I have watched in some time. Warriors are playing a few middle of the pack Eastern Conference teams on this road trip. If they don't come out of their slump IND, NYK, BOS and TOR will be tough. Get well soon Klay.
3 Jazz +2 19-7 What a fantastic run for the Utah Jazz. After a rough patch in the middle of the season the Jazz have won 10 of their last 12 games (7 consecutive) with losses by just a single point. After slumping early, the team has regained their 3-point percentage proficiency to shoot 42.2% on 43 3PA per game in the last month of basketball. On the season as a whole Utah’s relative ORTG stands at +8.8. 2nd all-time out of 1555 teams trailing only the 04-05 Nash led Suns. Their net rating of +11.4 would be top 5 all-time too if maintained over the course of a season eclipsed only by two Championship Jordan’s Bulls teams, the Warriors and the KD-Steph Dubs from 2017.
4 Nets -1 19-8 In our last 3 wins, the Nets have held opposing teams to 40 points in the 4th quarter. Just last year, you would've thought that stat meant per game but t

Smurf Girl is related to Brent Hanson who murdered brother, Clyde Hanson, his sister-in-law, Jessica, and her unborn child in South Dakota in December of 2021. Brent was a Bethelite, he sexually abused Veronica, but the JWs ignored her when she told them. Brent and Clyde were both into witchcraft. Brent liked to torture baby bunnies; he would post videos on Facebook. The cruelty of this family was laughed off by her dad, "that is what junkyard families do". They own Hanson Salvage in Milbank, SD. Her aunt found a bunch of rabbit corpses rotting under Brent's bed. Brent's behavior is normal in the Ortonville Congregation of thirty-five publishers. There have been multiple publishers from this Hall who have been imprisoned for pedophilia or for raping mentally disabled patients.

Smurf Girl's grandfather joined the Watchtower mafia because he reasoned if you can’t beat them, join them.

New Survivor Fan Ranks All Seasons Post Binge

Greetings Survivor Reddit. Just joined this subreddit today. I was introduced to this magnificent series over the Pandemic and wasted little time binging all 41 seasons. Honestly I’m not sure why it took me 28 years into my life to finally watch Survivor but it was well worth the wait. I started off on Cagayan on Netflix last May and was hooked right off the bat. Next, I watched Pearl Islands and Cook Islands before deciding that I was going to do a proper 6-month binge of the show from season 1. At that point I began taking notes of the seasons and giving a numerical score which formed my initial list. The rankings are according to how much I enjoyed the seasons but I tried not to hold it against the seasons where I already knew the winner ahead of time due to spoilers (those seasons are denoted with an asterisk * ).

As a general note about my philosophy in Survivor, the winner is always worthy as the entire point of the game is to reach the finals and convince the jury to give you the votes. However, sometimes I might find a winner underwhelming due to an unsatisfactory narrative arc or not receiving proper attention by the edit. I personally feel like the most recent seasons have been too Advantage and Idol heavy. I would say I prefer a good storyline to a flashy move at tribal.

Feel free to comment and criticize my list as I am sure plenty of people will disagree. I am sure long-time fans will have way more knowledge and insight than me. From what I understand from other rankings I have seen online my rankings for Borneo and Fiji are probably sacrilegious. Without further ado here are my rankings of all 41 seasons of survivor:

  1. Cagayan (season 28) 9.6

While I admit this season might have a slight advantage since I watched it first, I still feel confident placing it first. Cagayan has a great cast with consistent entertainment all the way through; from the brains tribe debacle at the beginning to some shocking blindsides in the post-merge. The last three immunity challenges were absolute nail biters and ultimately the season had a great winner although it only happened due to a highly questionable decision by Woo/manipulation from Tony. Tony finely walks the line between genius and insane which makes for a hell of a ride.

  1. Heroes versus Villains (Season 20) 9.5*

What a great theme for a season that incorporated an absolute all-star cast and started with a banger of a pilot episode. I am normally a post-merge guy but the pre-merge

Ben Taylor / Thinking Basketball's recent Top 75 players pod (transcribed)

Just thought I'd share this for anyone who wasn't keen to listen to the whole episode (I'd suggest listening anyway at like 1.5 speed, it was really interesting and not everything Ben said made it; I basically only included his actual list but there was a lotta fun content on the edges that I didn't include)

  • Podcast by guest Cody Houdek and host Ben Taylor, who runs the Thinking Basketball YouTube channel and wrote the Backpicks Top 40

  • Pod link: https://twitter.com/ElGee35/status/1451671346820182019

  • Btw, there was a bunch of stuff about other players who didn't make it onto Ben's list but DID make the actual list (Pistol Pete etc.) that I didn't transcribe bc it was not on this episode but the previous top 75 episode a few weeks back, here's the link to that one: https://twitter.com/ElGee35/status/1441493128658100235

Before we start: The spirit of the podcast is just to discuss the list, and to understand that there are probably about 95 guys who can make these 75 slots, and to generate conversation as a result. (note: Ben also says a ton of stuff that I didn't record down between each of the picks and also before the list officially started.) However, Ben strongly disagrees with keeping the old 50 essentially apparently all being voted in again. As we learn more about the game, we can learn to evaluate players better, and more players can and should be sorted in and out of the list as voters become smarter and more informed (he goes more into this in the pod)

Ben's Criteria: Career value. Peaks. Also, if possible, trying to include a smattering of a few of the best at each area of the game (scoring, playmaking, defense, shooting). Scalability is slightly considered, so if 2 players had a similar career/peak then the more scale-able player got the nod (side note: in Ben Taylor parlance, scalable skills are those that increase in value on better and better teams, e.g. defense, passing, shooting, offensive rebounding. You can think of it as attributes that great ceiling-raisers have. Steph, KG, Bird, KD, Draymond are examples of ultra-scalable players; LeBron, Magic, Nash, Luka, Harden less so - they're moreso elite floor-raisers)

#Starting chronologically from the 1940s:

1 George Mikan STAYS IN

2 Dolph Schayes STAYS IN.

Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT NSFW, THIS IS ABOUT LONG JOKES, BLONDE JOKES, SEXUAL JOKES, KNOCK KNOCK JOKES, POLITICAL JOKES, ETC BEING POSTED IN A DAD JOKE SUB

Try telling these sexual jokes that get posted here, to your kid and see how your spouse likes it.. if that goes well, Try telling one of your friends kid about your sex life being like Coca cola, first it was normal, than light and now zero , and see if the parents are OK with you telling their kid the "dad joke"

I'm not even referencing the NSFW, I'm saying Dad jokes are corny, and sometimes painful, not sexual

So check out r/jokes for all types of jokes

With the Joe Johnson hype train going full steam, is Iso-Joe and Hall of Famer?

Joe's HoF case is super interesting to me, so I had to look into it.

His raw stats case centres around a 12 year period from '03-'04 until '14-'15 when he averaged 19/4/5 on 45/37/80 splits. Teams with him as the best player had a pretty hard cap at around the 2nd round, and his defense was just sort of average. His career totals of 20,405 points, 5059 rebounds, and 5001 assists (so far) look great - there are no players with more career points eligible for the hall who aren't in there. His reputation as a clutch shot taker and maker is legendary, with clutch stats of all sorts to back it up, as well as every teams fanbase remembering at least one unbelievable high degree of difficulty shot made against them.

With 7 all-star appearances, you've got guys like Scottie Pippen, Steph Curry, and Willis Reed who completely outclass Joe - like there's no debate these guys are so high above him in the all-time pecking order it's ridiculous to even compare. But literally no player who isn't still playing (Aldridge, Curry, Paul George, Kyrie) that has at least 7 all-stars isn't in the hall of fame except for Larry Foust from before the shot clock era. 83/84 guys at best, 80/84 guys at worst - and it's looking pretty good for Johnson's case here. Plus, he is one of the rare (only?) players in NBA history with an iconic perfect nickname, Iso Joe, while also having one of the worst[*] nicknames in NBA history, The Armadillo Cowboy.

[*] I've seen it on worst lists, but I think this nickname is awesome on every level.

But, if we look at players with only 1 All-NBA team, and exclude players from before 1984 so it's at least comparable to the modern game (who the fuck is Howie Dallmar?), we see there are 5 players in the hall: Kevin McHale, Chris Bosh, Dave DeBusschere, Ralph Sampson, and Drazen Petrovic. Obviously Petrovic is in for his international play, and Ralph Sampson is in for his college play. So let's look at who he's competing with:

It's amazing to me Kevin McHale only made one All-NBA team, given the reverence with which he's spoken in NBA circles. But he's a 3x champ, 6x all-defense, and 2x Sixth Man of the Year, with a mythical set of post moves. And let's be honest, he gets that Boston bump of being on great teams despite not having the best individual statistics (see: 60's Celtics dynasty for people not named Cousy, Russell, Jones, or Havlicek). We never got to see his unmitigated peak in earnest because he played

My 4 year oldest favourit joke, which he very proudly memorized and told all his teachers.

Two muffins are in an oven, one muffin looks at the other and says "is it just me, or is it hot in here?"

Then the other muffin says "AHH, TALKING MUFFIN!!!"

Dropped my best ever dad joke & no one was around to hear it

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

I said "hey look, an escaPEA"

No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!

Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies πŸ˜‚

POLL - Which lock-in's will you vote for in NBA 75's 6 decades

So, they said... and I quote: "We want to get you more involved, by having you cast your vote and choose the Collection Complete Rewards for all six collections"

So that would indicate the community is going to be the last word on this. We will know whether they are bending the truth or not if anyone other than Magic wins for 1980's since he's the meta card the fanbase loves.

But I'm curious what the other lock-in desires are. We don't know whether they're gonna throw all 76 players (or 74 sans Barkley/Miller) at us, but considering the 1980's has only 2 guys left, it seems likely that every 80's player will be in it. The 60's and 70's may not get the full complement as they're the biggest fractions and have the least "meta" cards or fan favourites. But for completion, this is what we got from each decade and who still remains.

I've put Dave Bing in 1970's because he should be there. He played at his peak then, never played in the 80's and his card art is 1970's even though 2K incorrectly has him in the 1980's. One would assume that will be corrected when they start to give a damn again.

Official /r/nba Power Rankings #2 (11.15.2021)

27/30 rankers reporting this week. /R/NBA's Power Rankings are published every two weeks which is a bit different from most rankings. Other than that we rank the teams the same way as our competition. If write ups are left blank the team rep decided not to submit. We encourage any user to fill in the blanks in the comment section. Rankings were supposed to be completed prior to yesterday's games.

# Team Ξ” Record Comment
1 Warriors +2 11-2 The Warriors bench keeps getting deeper. Kuminga is playing meaningful minutes and looks as advertised. Gary Payton II is yamming highlight dunks. Their home stand is done and they lost their first game of the road trip vs Charlotte.
2 Nets +5 10-4 The Nets have been surging as of late, with their only loss being to Chicago since the last power rankings. That game was a B2B where you could see the fatigue set in over the course of the game. Kevin Durant is playing like the best player on the planet at the moment leading the league in scoring on absurd efficiency that we haven't ever seen. Harden is starting to heat back up and get into shape, he'll be the key to how far this team can go - KD can't do it all alone.
3 Suns +13 9-3 This sub loves piling on the Lakers, but why is no one talking about the defending Western Conference Champion Suns being 1-3? I didn’t realize until now that the Suns are currently 1-3.. why is no-one talking about this? They lost to a mediocre Kings team a couple days ago and nearly lost by 30 pts to the Trailblazers with a struggling Damian Lillard. And from what I know they’re just about fully healthy. For anyone actively watching the Suns this season, what’s the main reason for the early season struggles? You would think they’d have a bunch of momentum to start the season after their amazing Finals run..
4 Nuggets +2 9-4 Despite back-to-back losses in Memphis and the loss of Michael Porter Jr. to a (very concerning) lower back injury, things have since trended upwards for the Nuggets, as they've reeled off five wins in a row, including some dominating performances against Miami and Portland. Nikola Jokic continues to build his case for a repeat MVP award with consistently spectacular games, and absolutely BODYING Markieff Morris has earned him extra prais
