Bermuda rig Puns

Long story short, I have never been on a boat. Except to drink.

I do work for a company that owns one, and they need me to fill a crew spot. We have a 70’ Bermuda rig sailboat. I have no clue what I’m doing. Help?

I've been looking at a lot of small (±10ft) sailboat plans the last few months but most of them are lateen-rigged (or other types of unstayed masts) as opposed to a simple, goog looking bermuda rig. What's the reason for this? Is it harder to build a mast for a bermuda rig? Does it have to withstand greater forces?

I tried to find the answer in wikipedia, but I found all sorts of theories

The ones that made more sense to me where that the Polynesians developed them first and then they spread to Europe, but there are also plenty of serious theories that propose that someone introduced the Polynesians to them: the greeks, the romans, the arabs, have your pick.

Then whomever introduced the Polynesians to this technology supposedly didn't develop it that much until around the 1700 for some reason when apparently the Dutch started using them?.

To be honest these theories where the Polynesians didn't develop this technology seem wrong to me, ,to be completely honest, it seems like people don't want to admit that the "savage" Polynesians developed a technology that the Europeans didn't, and they just want to look for a way in which they developed it first and just never used it.

Anyway, that's why I come to you, maybe I'm wrong and these theories have good evidence to back them up. Maybe this technology was developed more than once, that's also possible.

I'm building a Bermuda rig sail to go on a canoe. Will the sail function well enough on a reach or run without a boom? It will have a securing line so I can control how much it's giving out. About a 5' tall sail.

Another post got me looking at Lanteen rigs, and there are tons of vastly different rigs out there. it seems that the sloop (and similar) rigs are by far the most common for both small dinghy’s and large monoculture yachts. I assume it is because they optimize across efficiency, powers, handlings, etc. but we have been sailing for thousands of years. Is there change in sailing styles, materials, or "new technology" that would have suddenly made the sloop rig the dominant choice?

Not really Middle Earth, but a fantasy world populated with traditional fantasy elements we know and love.

If a passage to an entirely new world was discovered in 1690...

1. How would the expanding empires of Europe respond to a world populated with other races?
2. Would the Catholic Church or Jesuit Church attempt to convert the native races?
3. What effect would an entirely new world reachable via the Atlantic have on the development of Spanish, French, and English colonies in the Americas or India/East Asia?
4. How would a full-rigged Ship of the Line fare against a dragon and rider?
5. What would European explorers name elves, orcs, and dwarves? Would they see them as people/chattel/beasts?
6. How would wizards respond to field cannons and musket volleys?
7. Which historical figures would attempt to find magic/occult powers?

I'd love your feedback on these questions or other questions I haven't thought of.

Right now my story follows three characters.

1. Jack Thatcher, Quartermaster aboard the pirate frigate, Dromonjager. Jack has sailed through the storm to the new world in search of fatter prizes, but what awaits him on the other side will have him questioning every decision that led him to that point.
2. Black Caesar (My historical insert POV), is recruited by Queen Nanny of the Windward Maroons to help her start a slave revolution. Little does she know, Black Caesar has other ideas in mind.
3. Francis Bryant, a Jesuit Missionary, is called to bring Jesus to the ogre race. Despite his arch-bishop and colleagues thinking he is mad, he is determined to 'save' their wretched souls.

So that I could frequently say, "I am going to walk 5 miles now."
