Canadian FIRE: Considerations for those of us (mostly) North of the 49th parallel

Hi all,

Canadian FIRE question:

Has anyone here found any good write-ups on taking CPP/OAS early or late when planning to retire aggressively earlier than normal? I'm very curious about the ideas around including federal programs in FIRE planning, but more often than not, I see people exclude them from their calculation.

All of this is just hypothetical discussion points and I don't advocate for either path. I'm not interested in milking the MOST money possible out of the system based on dying at age X. I'm just curious about strategies for FIRE planning and others' thoughts on the topic.

Proposed options:

Plan A)

If you assume that you'll work at a maximum pensionable earnings level from 24 to 44 and will draw CPP and OAS as early as possible you may only get ~$15k/yr, or $30k/yr for a couple. Not bad, but maybe less than people would be able to live on comfortably, so they'd need some additional savings to top up the difference. Okay, we can plan for that.

Plan B)

If you assume that the same couple will delay their CPP/OAS until 70 they are entitled to ~$27k/yr, or $54k/yr for a couple. That's an income level that people may be able to live on fairly comfortably in their 70s and onwards without any additional income.

Thoughts:

Plan A)

The supplemental income you'd receive from CPP/OAS would do a lot of the lifting for your portfolio in the future and it would likely drop a 4% SWR to a 2% (or whatever), so as long as you still had a half decent nest egg after 16 years of withdrawals you'd likely still be fine, with a portfolio well situated to grow significantly for the rest of your life at your now-lower SWR. You'd have more exposure to the markets in old age, but less exposure to possible changes to Canadian retirement program changes.

Plan B)

If theoretical people were to work for 20 years then retire at 44 (or whatever age) and plan to self-fund their retirement until 70, then be dependent on government programs for the remainder of their lives at a relatively comfortable level, that would alleviate effectively all sequence of return risks for a 4% rule SWR adherence since you'd only be covering your own costs for only 26 years (not 30) with a huge likelihood that you'd still have lots of the money you started with if not more, and any kind of longevity concerns should be covered by the fact that you've locked in a comfortable living after your 70th birthday regardless of how long you live or what happens to the markets

During the Korean War, after NATO forces push the North past the 38th parallel, why did NATO continue pushing them further north, thereby invading as the North did to the South?

I just started looking into the Korean War and this seems like one of those "What if" questions that would have far reaching impacts if that were to never have happened in the first place.

Were there any internal conversations within NATO advising to NOT cross the 38th? What was the justification for pushing the northern forces further north?

(Spoilers Main) North and Dorne Contra-Parallels

Hello,

Today I noticed that there are some counter-parallel points between North (Stark) and Dorne (Martell). Maybe it's not a big deal, maybe it's important... decide for yourself.

But firstly:

>Q: Which house would you serve were you live in Westeros?
>
>GRRM: Okay, let’s fantasize. Probably, I would belong to the Stark House, because, you know, I’ve lived with them for so long. Or, perhaps, I would be a Dornishman. After all, Dorne have a lot of spicy dishes, and I like it - I’m from New Mexico, and there are sharp peppers and much more. And there are hot women in Dorne, which is also good. So, perhaps I would like to become a Dornishman - I would live in the deserts, in the valleys of the Dornish rivers. But I think in my heart I’m still Stark. Esquire Russia 2017 - [Transcription]

GRRM's favorite house is Stark. This is generally known, but I think his 2nd favourite, obviously, is the Dornish side. History of both sides etc. When we look at it, it has some prominent features that we can see it. We see in this excerpt that for Martin, north-dorne is important.

This may have led him to write similar and contra-parallel points about his two favorite Westeros households.

  1. The North is a very cold region. ice. Dorne is in the south and is very hot. Fire. Even the emblem of House Martell has the sun. House Stark's words are "winter is coming" and their heirloom sword is called "ice" We can see the name Song of Ice and Fire in these two regions.

  2. This also paints a picture in line with Yin-Yang philosophy. It is possible to see Martin using this in his books. Even the emblem on the door of FM's house is actually a symbol of yin-yang at one point. I'll assume you know this video (if you don't, I recommend it). Arienne and Queyntyn will die according to this philosophy; Quentyn died by "fire" and Arianne will die by "water", that is, at sea.

  3. Both the Stark and Martell men seem to die when they leave their home.

In fact, this is a known pattern for the Starks. Ned and his father and brother (even his sister) and Robb died when they landed south. It's kind of like a curse.

But the situation seems not much different for the Martells. Doran's uncle died in battle, and later Elia died. Later, when

Indirect parallels between Legoshi’s dilemma and black people in North America

Now, I know Beastars is meant to be an allegory for many different issues in society, and can’t be put in a single category. However, as a black person, I find Legoshi’s arc in the second season very relatable.

As a carnivore living in the society of Beastars, Legoshi often feels like he has to disguise his carnivore traits to make his herbivore peers more comfortable with him. Considering the complicated situation in Beastars, this wouldn’t be a bad thing if Legoshi wasn’t dimming his light to not be noticed by others. You could say that it’s a symptom of his introvertedness, but he wouldn’t feel the need to second guess his every decision if he was a herbivore or weaker predator.

Now how does this relate to black people? Black people in North America often feel the need to dim their culture in front of the majority in order to not be stereotyped. Most black people living in white areas are often afraid of being stereotyped in various ways and adjust their behaviour so that non-black people feel more comfortable around them, even if the non-black person has little consideration for making black people extra comfortable in the same manner. Obviously not every non-black person expects black people to act this way, but black people feel a societal expectation to to function in society. Black people often alter their speech, mannerisms and even sense of style and hair to appeal to the societal standard to avoid being seen as β€˜dangerous’ β€˜rough’ β€˜uneducated’ and so on. Kind of like how the mayor Lion got plastic surgery to be less scary to the public. Think about why tall black men are usually considered more intimidating and scarier than their non-black counterparts. Why black women are seen as overly angry and aggressive. Black people sometimes avoid talking about racism in front of non-black people in fear of making them uncomfortable.

So, carnivores in Beastars like Black people and other minorities irl have to hide parts of themselves and act extra polite to appeal to the majority. The difference is that this phenomenon makes way more sense in Beastars because Carnivores can actually be an inherent physical danger to herbivores. In contrast, black people are not inherently dangerous to non-black people and are prematurely judged based on stereotypes that originate from factors related to systemic oppression. Obviously it’s not a direct parallel, but I just find it cool that Beastars has commentary that can relate to racism, sexism, r*pe, mental illnes

The stats definitely don't support Ant's comments on Gobert's rim protection. He is so far the best interior defender in the league when it comes to defending / blocking shots at least.

Ant can do better on that end of the floor though.
