Mount Pinatubo is an active stratovolcano in the Zambales Mountains, located on the tripoint boundary of the Philippine provinces of Zambales, Tarlac and Pampanga. Its eruptive history was unknown to most before the pre-eruption volcanic activity of early 1991.

TIL that in 1991, the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Phillipines caused a volcanic winter which cooled global temperatures by about 1.3Β°F (0.7Β°C) for several years. On June 20, 1992, the high temperature in parts of Michigan was only 51Β°F (11Β°C).

The 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo threw enough sulfur into the air to lower global temperatures by 0.5 degrees until 1994. What effect did this have on the course of history, if any?
In the past, volcanic winters like the ones caused by the eruption of Mount Tambora in 1815, the likely volcanic winter of 535 CE, and the eruption of Thera in 1620 BCE all had major impacts on human society and human history. And while the volcanic winter following the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo was nowhere near as severe as these major volcanic winters, half a degree of cooling is not insignificant. Are there any events that could have been triggered by this climate shift? Or is it too early to tell?

TIL that the Mount Pinatubo eruption in 1991 was felt by the entire world. The volcano ejected 10 cubic km of magma and 22 million tons of sulfur dioxide. It also lowered earth's temperature by 0.5Β°C or 0.9Β°F for 2 years.
