I have been in this hobby for just about a year. I am part of a British Unit. While I definitely don't know everything I feel I can answer a lot of questions about the hobby especially fir anyone considering getting involved.
Recommendations on gaming in The American War of Independence
Hello all,
My wife has recently showed interest in trying out a wargame for the first time. She has shown interest in the American war of independence. I am looking for game recommendations suited to this period.
I am aware of Black Powder and Sharp Practise, but after reading the Sharp Practise rules I'm concerned about how many miniatures we would need. We are in South Africa and as such all minis would have to be imported, which can add up quite quickly.
If the Confederacy had won its independence during the American Civil War, do you think they would have fought on the side of the Axis during WWII or would they have agreed to work with the Allies after Pearl Harbor?
Me personally I think the confederacy would still work with the Axis mainly due to the fact Pearl Harbor would not be their naval base so it would not be an attack on them but, I still ask the question because I wonder if they would view it as an attack on Americans in general if that makes any sense.
I've always struggled to see the American War of Independence as a conventional anti-colonial uprising. It seems more similar to the Boer Wars of South Africa; a settler society which developed an identity of its own, and wanted to break free from the metropole. Is this accurate?
I mean, the Americans weren't exactly native to the territory.

Opinions on an AC Game set on the South American Wars of Independence?
I Always thought that it could be an incredibly interesting setting for a game, most of the leaders have ideologies that could easily fit in both the Templars and Assassins. It could either be set on Bolivar's Campaigns or on the Southern Wars of Independence with people like José de San Martín, Bernardo O'Higgins, Jose Miguel Carrera, and other members of The Lautaro Lodge.
Although I'm not sure it would fit Ubisoft's current style with vast open worlds and with the (honestly pretty lame) new parkour system, cities like Caracas, Lima, Santiago, or Buenos Aires would fit incredibly well with the older style of games, with a heavy emphasis on parkour.
This is just my opinion though and I wanted to see if you guys had any thoughts about a setting there.

I want to compare the technology the americans and the british used and then the tactics that they used and that led the americans to victory. We always learn about Texas and things like the Alamo, but today's Texas doesn't include the large chunk of eastern New Mexico that was part of its contested territory back in the day. I've heard that the area was under Comanche control, and so perhaps it had little impact on Mexican or Texas politics at the time. Is this true?
I'd like to know what was going on in this area around that time as Texas formed into Texas and west New Mexico had already been included in Mexico. So eastern New Mexico seems a bit ignored/forgotten by history but it was clearly there, so what was going on there?

How has the role of black and Native Americans in the historiography of the American War of Independence evolved?
So I'm not entirely sure how to ask this question. Something that seems to me to be frequently left out in histories of the American War of Independence is the role of black and Native Americans. I want to know how their impact on the war has been portrayed over time, whether it was marginalised, whitewashed, or outright ignored. I'm not American btw, so I might have some gaps in my knowledge.

American here: I've been told my family from Finland has some musical roots, and my great grandpa was involved with the independence movement and Winter War of 1917. Is there any way to do research into this?
To make this quick my great grandpa's name was Yrjö Siukonen. From what I've been told he was a pretty prominent church organist at the beginning of the 1900s. I was told the resistance movement to the Russians was done through the churches and as an organist he supposedly helped with resistance to the point of having to hide in cellars from the Russians. In addition the priest of the church he was organist for was murdered by the Russians in 1917.
The closest thing I can find is This genealogy page on him. It seems my great great grandpa was "Director Cantus" Herman Siukonen and has a photo of himself online despite being born in 1847. Also I found out my grandma's uncle has a Wikipedia page in Finnish I can translate. I've learned my grandma's cousin(?) taught at the Sibelius Academy (which is where my grandma went to school as well) for almost 40 years or so but that's all I have.
Any ideas how a person who doesn't know Finnish can find more information on this?
Edit: I've been told a summer home my grandma went to has been turned into a historic site also, but again I don't know how to find this out. I remember photos of it as a kid but that's about it.

You are in charge of Mexican army against Texas war of Independence and the War of Cession. How do you fight and defeat the American army?
You can control all realistic "what ifs" and things you think went drastically wrong. Was there anything that could have been realistically done to beat back the United States? What would have been most effective?
