[Product Question] Alternative to Skinceuticals Emollience? Love it, but the $$!

I love how my skin feels and looks with this, but I canโ€™t justify $134 AUD a jar. Anyone know of a similiar moisturiser?

Also, Iโ€™ve gone through the wiki on moisturisers, but Iโ€™m not sure what kind of moisturiser Emollience is, despite the name. Iโ€™ve tried other drugstore oil-based moisturisers but they arenโ€™t nearly as good. I may be a bit confused, but if I could understand the type perhaps I could understand why my skin likes it so much and that would make finding an alternative easier. Any help on that would also be appreciated!

Review: Coxir Black Snail Collagen Toner

Just a small review on a new little happy hitter in my pile! A few months ago I was buying some cream on iHerb and needed something to fill space for free shipping. At the time Coxir was on sale so I got it for $12.16. It had snail and that was enough to be a target. I kind of considered the brand to be a Cosrx knockoff, which it very well may be, or just have super similar packaging. But I absolutely did not take the purchase seriously and it sat on my shelf for a while.

About a month ago I opened it and gave it a try. Iโ€™ve used it on and off since then, never quite committing until recently. Hereโ€™s what changed and what I think about the product!

What changed: on a lark I decided to smear half my face with Coxir and the other half with Misshaโ€™s Misa Cho Gong Jin Toner (bigger review for later). I was shocked by how the Coxir immediately dimmed the redness on its side. It was very visible. It soaked in and bam: calmer skin. I have mild rosacea so calm skin is my battle. Calm skin in summer is like a war.

Using it more and for me, itโ€™s just a really nice product. Itโ€™s thin but thickened enough that itโ€™s not so watery it flows off your hand immediately. You can easily layer it. It doesnโ€™t feel heavy on my skin; itโ€™s barely noticeable. I really enjoy the scent which is very powder fresh to my nose. Itโ€™s just a nice simple easy to layer non-offensive toner (for me). I didnโ€™t even look at the ingredients until now but theyโ€™re nice: (and kudos to Coxir for having them easily available on their website)

Snail Secretion Filtrate, Water, Betula Alba Juice, Butylene glycol, Methyl Gluceth-20, Sodium Hyaluronate, 1,2-Hexanediol, Glycoproteins, Betaine, Glycerin, Yeast Extract, Viola Mandshurica Flower Extract, Morus Alba Fruit Extract, Sea Water, Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, PPG-26-Buteth-26, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Allantoin, Black Soybean Extract, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Extract, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Extract, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Extract, Panax Ginseng Berry Extract, Adenosine, Copper Tripeptide-1, Hydrolyzed Collagen, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Parfum

A lot of stuff I quite like and gravitate to normally. Because of this Iโ€™m going to be checking out some of their other stuff in the future. The Black Snail Collagen line has a few products and this has been more visibly valuable than several centella focused products Iโ€™ve used over my AB journey.

Sesame consumption may reduce muscle damage and oxidative stress in soccer players | Barbosa et. al. (Frontiers 2017)

Full text link: https://doi.org/10.3389/fphys.2017.00196

I recently came across this study on sesame consumption in physically highly active people, in this case soccer players. The study design and methods seem well-done, so I thought that it might be interesting to share! Especially since Sesame is widespread throughout many "ancient" cultures, such as in Sudan.

Abstract

>Nutritional intervention with antioxidants rich foods has been considered a strategy to minimize the effects of overtraining in athletes. This experimental, randomized, and placebo-controlled study evaluated the effects of consumption of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) on muscle damage markers, oxidative stress, systemic inflammation, and aerobic performance in male semi-professional soccer players. Twenty athletes were randomly assigned to groups that received 40 g (two tablespoons) per day of sesame or a placebo during 28 days of regular training (exposed to routine training that includes loads of heavy training in the final half of the season). Before and after intervention, creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and aerobic capacity were evaluated. Before intervention, a physiologic imbalance was noted in both groups related to CK and LDH levels. Sesame intake caused a reduction of CK (19%, p < 0.05), LDH (37%, p < 0.05), MDA (55%, p < 0.05) and hs-CRP (53%, p < 0.05) and increased SOD (14%, p < 0.05), vitamin A (25%, p < 0.05), and vitamin E (65%, p < 0.05) in the experimental group. These phenomena were accompanied by increased aerobic capacity (17%, p < 0.05). The placebo group showed an increase in CK (5%, p < 0.05) and no significant change in LDH, SOD or vitamin A. MDA levels decreased (21%, p < 0.05) and vitamin E increased (14%, p < 0.05) in the placebo group, but to a much lesser extent than in the experimental group. These results show that sesame consumption may reduce muscle damage and oxidative stress while improving the aerobic capacity in soccer players.

Conclusion

>The results suggest that sesame consumption could be a nutritional strategy to improve the aerobic capacity of soccer players and to reduce important markers of oxidative stress and muscle damage.

Hacking Kama Ayurveda

So some of you might've come across my comment on another thread about how I've figured out Kama suppliers, so on request here's a separate thread. I had no intention of sharing this info until someone asked in the comments on another thread and people were curious.

Edited to add a disclaimer:

PLEASE DONโ€™T STEAL MY RESEARCH AND PASS IT OFF AS YOUR OWN FOR THE SAKE OF GETTING INSTA/YOUTUBE LIKES. GIVE CREDIT WHERE ITโ€™S DUE. ๐Ÿคฌ

I love love love Kama but not it's price. Realised the manufacturers are listed on the labels and started a wild goose chase going through ALL the products.

  • Oils, Mists, Soaps, Face packs - come from manufacturers.
  • Creams, Hair products - made by Kama

You can check out my research for the manufacturers at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1GgE8SUUGnF0ClmYx7kDW-vSntOqqSlq4ZGV-bkIRoV4/edit. Being a numbers geek I discovered the markup is an average of 85% over the manufacturers retail price.

Main Suppliers:

  • Mists: is Amarnath Mishra, head to https://www.amarnathmishra.in/ and place an order via Whatsapp. Instead of a 200ml bottle from Kama before you'll now have litres! And still save 90% over Kama.

Order received: see mini review in the comments at https://www.reddit.com/r/IndianSkincareAddicts/comments/iflfoc/hacking_kama_ayurveda/g2p4fte/

  • Ayurvedic Oils/Face packs/Soaps: is Arya Vaidya Pharma (AVP) Coimbatore. All Kama products and the corresponding products are made in the same factory in Kerala so should probably have the same formulation. Wherever possible I tried to verify the ingredient lists and AVP packaging images/videos.
    • How to order? AVP is very hard to find online, so after going through several websites and being ghosted by the CS, I ordered from www.ayusharogyam.com (no affiliation) they donโ€™t keep stock of AVP products so theyโ€™ll place an order with their Kerala supplier based on what you need and then it takes 2 weeks. Am still waiting on my order to be delivered but had a call from their team last week explaining it - they wanted me to switch to AVS Kottakal as they have ready stock but I stuck with AVP due to the production being in the same factory as Kama. They have weight based shipping, mine was 120 and used AYUSH10 for a 10% code. Amazon sellers have minimum quantity r

[Review]: Evenprime Daily Moisturizer

Evenprime Daily Moisturizer

When I think about what I want in the perfect daily moisturizer things like long-lasting hydration, soothing, nourishment, and brightening come to mind. Luckily, I have found a couple great products this year including the Good Skin Days On The Bright Side Moisturizer and Pureforet Centella Multi Lotion.

And, Iโ€™m happy to say Iโ€™ve found another awesome option with the Evenprime Daily Moisturizer.

This ingredient packed lotion features niacinamide, panthenol, allantoin, sunflower seed oil, chamomile, licorice root, madecassoside, ferment filtrate, and several forms of hyaluronic acid...essentially covering all of my bases.

In addition, the lightweight gel/cream contains knotweed, mushroom extracts, and soybean seed extract to add a boost of antioxidant and anti-irritation properties. Seriously, this is one of the most well-formulated and impressive ingredients lists I have seen in a single product.

Bringing things home...the Evenprime Daily Moisturizer absorbs incredibly quickly without leaving behind a film, residue, or heavy feeling making it perfect for my oily/combination/changes every day skin.

Over time I have really appreciated how this moisturizer helps to calm my skin, provide a decent amount of hydration, and even enhanced the brightening effects of my exfoliation/essence steps. I honestly cannot get enough of this product!

But, now that the cooler weather is upon us alongside the dryness in the air (hello Colorado)...Iโ€™ve found myself looking for a bit more in the way of emollient โ€œmoisture lockingโ€ products. The Evenprime Daily Moisturizer hasnโ€™t provided quite enough recently, especially for my pm routine.

While I have been able to work around this by incorporating the Solved Skincare Jojoba Oil Serum into the mix (3 drops in the am and 6 in the pm), I could see those with particularly dry skin looking for more.

The Evenprime Daily Moisturizer is still an incredible product that I think just about anyone could see some benefit from...and rumor has it there might be a heavier version in the works! But for now, Iโ€™ll be continuing to add an extra boost and then reaching for something more rich in the coming months.

Full Ingredients List: WATER (AQUA), GLYCERIN, CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE, POLYGLYCERYL-3 METHYLGLUCOSE DISTEARATE, 1,2-HEXANEDIOL, NIACINAMIDE, GLYCERYL STEARATE, SORBITAN STEARATE, ADENOSINE, ALLANTOIN, PANTHENOL, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, HELIANTHUS ANNUUS (SUNFLOWER) SEED OIL, SEA WATER (MARIS AQUA),

Decoding Product Labels

Hi all,

Thank you soooo much for all the love with the Hacking Kama post https://www.reddit.com/r/IndianSkincareAddicts/comments/iflfoc/hacking_kama_ayurveda/, am happy my weird geekery has been helpful and as there were some requests for other brands that am not aware of I thought Iโ€™ll share some of the details so you can decode labels yourself.

So first off most Indian company labels donโ€™t have proper labels. Have a look at the Companies section:

  1. Marketed, Manufactured and Packaged by:

As an exercise: go through all the products you own, see the addresses listed and do some Googling to figure more details about the manufacturer. Like in the case of Kama you might find the source manufacturer or you might find some brands get their products manufactured in other brands manufacturing units. Do share some of your detective sleuthing in this thread.

2. Ingredients: A non-negotiable tip: if you aren't already, you have to make it a habit of looking at product ingredients to figure out whatโ€™s in the product - fillers, essential oils, irritants etc.: There are some sites which help with it but mostly cater to Western products:

Some research on claims concerning cannabis and Buddhism

This thread got a lot of attention and many claims were made in it which I have been trying fact check. Here are my findings so far.

Claim 1

A paper by someone named Mia Touw claims that there is a common Buddhist tantric sฤdhanฤ in which cannabis is taken. This paper cites Agehananda Bharati's book The Tantric Tradition. The specific anecdote that the paper which the paper cites begins on page 244. There, Bharati says " Only quite recently some comprehensive instruction manuals were published, which contain both procedural instructions and the mantras as well as the texts which are to be recited. I am here following such a recent manual published in Sanskrit and Hindi. It is called Vฤmamฤrga..."

The author of this text is one Paแน‡แธit Vanล›ฤซdar Sukul Vaidyarฤj according to Bharati, but in the Hindi version he seems to be called Devadatt Shukla. You can find the book here if you want it, but note that it is a manual for the sฤdhanฤ in Hindu tantra, not in Buddhist tantra.

Now, the portion on the use of cannabis in this sฤdhanฤ begins on page 250 of Bharati's book and ends on page 253. Throughout that section, nowhere does Bharati say that this part of the sฤdhanฤ is paralleled in Buddhist tantric practices. Therefore, I don't really know why Mia Touw uses this as a source for the use of cannabis in any Buddhist tantric sฤdhanฤ. It is clear to me that Touw is mistaken here, since Bharati's book not only does not show that there is a tantric sฤdhanฤ which uses cannabis, it doesn't even claim that this is true. I have never personally heard of such a sฤdhanฤ in Buddhism. If it exists, someone please share what non-esoteric knowledge they have of it.

Claim 2

It is claimed that the Buddha ate hemp seeds. This story comes either from Buddhacarita or from Lalitavistara. I've found references to hemp seeds in English translations from the Chinese. However, in both texts the Sanskrit places where those translations say "hemp" use the word tila. Tila actually does not mean hemp. Maybe the Chinese word used to translate it means, that but tila is the word Aล›vaghoแนฃa uses, and it refers to Sesamum indicum, not any species of cannabis. If someone knows Chinese and can go to sections of either Buddhacarita or Lalitavistara in the Chinese and see what the wor

Five Best DIY Toothache Remedies

As is generally the case with any illness, we want to consider the cause of the illness as well as the most urgent manifest symptoms. ย There are many possible causes of toothache. ย Let us consider for this article one that is undoubtedly a major cause โ€“ infection. ย Obviously, if infection is causing a toothache, we want to address the infection with antimicrobial agents. ย Most of our DIY toothache remedies have some antimicrobial properties. ย Barberry (Berberis spp.) will be discussed in this article, though it represents others of the group that are also quite useful and most better-known; such as Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis), Oregon Grape Root (Mahonia spp.), and Goldthread (Coptis spp.). ย Spilanthes is also a stellar antimicrobial. ย It will be discussed here additionally because it has numbing and sialagogue properties โ€“ a perfect toothache herb. ย Another classic remedy that must be mentioned is Clove (Syzygium aromaticum), usually used as essential (distilled) oil. ย Sesame (Sesamum indicum) oil, or another cooking oil, can be used in a remedy called oil-pulling. ย And the fifth remedy is the technique of shiatsu (acupressure).

There are many additional DIY remedies that can be found outside in various ecosystems. ย It is well worth getting to know your local forests and camping areas in case the need arises to find a toothache remedy. ย Toothache is some of the worst pain I have experienced. ย It can keep a person awake at night and feeling very miserable. ย If you are in the woods or otherwise away from medical care or even your home medicine cabinet, there will likely be many herbal remedies found at hand among the plant life.

Trees in particular offer many toothache remedies. ย Prickly Ash in certain areas is a helpful remedy. ย More wide-spread are the conifers. ย Pines, Spruce, Fir, and others produce resins that can be very helpful. ย Myrrh is another tree resin well-known for treating toothache. ย Willlows and Poplars as well are well-known pain relieving herbs. ย Among the herbaceous plants there are things like the Mints, Yarrow, and other aromatic and/or antimicrobial plants. ย A study in toothache remedies, however abundant they are, might best start with the five classic remedies mentioned above.

Barberry

Japanese Barberry (Berberis thunbergii) is a common and hated invasive in my area. ย Though not in e

Substituting ingredients in a Maui Moisture hair mist dupe!

The ingredients are pretty straight forward, the bulk of the product is a combination of emollients, oil, and oil soluable extracts. I like this spray because it is very lightweight, but it's just amazing at detangling dry hair.

The original ingredients list: Isopropyl Myristate, Dicaprylyl Ether, Isododecane, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Vanilla Planifolia Fruit Extract, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Aleurites Moluccana Seed Oil, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Glycerin, Fragrance

The only issue I'm having is finding dicaprylyl ether, which I think I will substitute with Lotioncrafter CCT (Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride). Dicaprylyl ether is a skin/hair conditioning non greasy emollient, a clear, odorless oil. The Lotioncrafter CCT sounds pretty much the same so I think I can sub it.

I also couldn't find isododecane, but I found just dodecane. Lotioncrafter recommends using their dodecane in conditioners and styling products, dodecane is completely soluable in oil and can actually be used as an oil substitute to make products less greasy/heavy.

I also don't know how they incorporated glycerin into this. It looks like an anhydrous product because there's no preservative. I was just going to leave glycerin out of my formulation. Will these substitutions work?

Hey all!,

So i havenโ€™t used hair products in years purely due to the fact i donโ€™t want to use a bunch of random chemicals on my scalp And iโ€™m thinning so i donโ€™t want anything to accelerate the hair loss or just mess up my scalp with crappy ingredients (I know if you have MPB your going bald regardless of whether you use product or not but i shouldnโ€™t imagine they help.)

These are the two best looking ones without any funky ingredients, potentially some questionable natural ingredients though?

Is there any ingredients in any of these that could cause hair loss potentially?

I dislike karma whores who make posts that imply it's their cake day, simply for upvotes.

I won't be doing that today!

You take away their little brooms

I did it, I finally did it. After 4 years and 92 days I went from being a father, to a dad.

This morning, my 4 year old daughter.

Daughter: I'm hungry

Me: nerves building, smile widening

Me: Hi hungry, I'm dad.

She had no idea what was going on but I finally did it.

Thank you all for listening.
