Played trivia last night. A category was mythology. Question was name the Greek counterpart for the Roman God Mars. After devouring these books for years, I knew the answer and wrote Ares's name down REAL QUICK. Safe to say the knowledge learned from these books does pay off. So thanks Uncle Rick!

Professor Lupin's first name is perhaps a reference to the Remus of Roman mythology
This has probably been posted before (I'm actually kinda new to the Harry Potter world and this sub), but it JUST dawned on me that Professor Lupin's first name is Remus which I would assume is an allusion to Romulus and Remus - the twin brothers who were revived by a female wolf in Roman mythology. Which makes sense because he's a werewolf.
Edit - I feel a little dumb for posting something so obvious but I'm having a lot of fun reading the books for the first time. I'm on OOTP right now. There's SO many cool references if you pay a little attention.

Why didnβt the Romans/Latins have an βoriginalβ mythology?
Forgive me if any of these claims are wrong, I donβt know much about the religions of the ancient world.
At least from what Iβve heard, the Romans had two main religions before adopting Christianity: an altered version of Greek mythology, and a cult to a Syrian sun god called Sol Invictus.
Why didnβt they seem to have their own unique mythology, compared to neighboring cultures such as the Greeks and Persians?

Book recommendations on Roman mythology and religious practices?
Hiya, I'm interested in learning more about how religion of the Ancient Romans and how they practiced. I don't like calling it 'mythology' bc I consider it as truth, but basically I'd love to know more about how they worshipped Venus, Mars, etc, as well as the actual stories ('mythology) behind their practices.
Thanks!

Both Greek and Roman Mythologies shared the same gods, of course with different names like Zeus and Jupiter, how did that became to be?
Were they practicing the same religion? Did one take the religion from another? Basically, what's known about the upbringing between the two religions.

What do you think of Greek/Roman mythology and religion?
Iβve recently been studying it a lot and itβs become my new special interest. I just find the idea of studying various ancient cultures that formed the bedrock of western civilizations interesting and in general just a blast to study. While we know lots on Greece and Rome thereβs still tons of things we donβt completely know. In fact Iβm so interested in this Iβve considered joining either a Hellenic or Roman club or organization that studies these things or is interested in these cultures
Do you hold similar views?

Tips for encounters with Greek/Roman/Egyptian mythology vibe levels 1-5?
I am perusing the monster manual and now wishing I knew more mythology. I am prepping for a low level campaign likely in levels 1-5 and trying to prepare encounters that will work well for those levels. I am all ears for non-combat encounters, but when it comes to combat these are the monsters so far I've come up with:
- Minotaur
- Basilisk
- Giant Lion
- Cyclops ^((might be too strong even for 5th level))
- Medusa ^((might be too strong even for 5th level))
- Chimera ^((might be too strong even for 5th level))
- Satyr
- Harpy
- Dragon ^(of appropriate CR)
- Griffon
- Naga ^(Bone Naga or CR too high)
Got any more ideas around these levels?

Why don't people follow Greek, Norse, Roman...etc mythologies/religions
Maybe its just because it is not talked about as much as Christianity or Judaism but why don't more people follow the Greek or Roman gods.
I know Christianity kinda took the world for 2 thousands years or so but I feel as if Greek and Norse mythologies have entered the main stream with pop culture.
Unless there are a few million people who do follow them and just are not talked about were are they or why don't more people follow them?

What is the best work on Roman Mythology?
I often hear Edith Hamilton's work as cited as the best, but that is primarily Greek. I also have T.P. Wiseman's Myths of Rome which comes with a heavy archaeology lens. But I'm curious to know if there are any other comprehensive works on Roman mythology worth calling out?

De Penates and their relation to Roman mythology
In the Aeneid Juno says:
"gens inimica mihi Tyrrhenum navigat aequor,
Ilium in Italiam portans victosque Penates" which got me wondering about the Pentates relation with Roman mythos in general. Did some gods have a disdain for them?Β Were they seen as heretical?
