Different Senses of Property Ownership with Pope Leo XIII

β€œTo own” comes from the same root of β€œto owe” in English. Specifically, β€œown” was once used as a past form, so β€œown” used to mean something like β€œowed.”

Using this etymological connection, it is easier to see that ownership is a kind of obligation. Specifically, it is an obligation that others have towards the property owner with respect to the property itself.

When we piece this insight together with the doctrine of the universal destination of goods, what we end up with is ownership meaning some property owned is owed to the owner by the community and everyone a part of it. To put it another way, property ownership is a kind of authority over others.

Why does this kind of obligation, authority, exist? Because not all goods, specifically material goods, can be consumed or possessed in common by their very nature as material, either at all, or at the same time, or can only be shared with a finite amount of people. You and I cannot share the same bite of cake at all, and while you and I can share the same shovel, we cannot use it at the same time, and although we can slice up a cake to share with others, we cannot slice the thing infinitely, and so forth.

And so such goods must be distributed to individuals and families. Such goods, although given in common by nature, nevertheless must be received by only one by nature also. And hence, natural law both affirms the universal destination of goods and particular property rights. As Pope Leo puts it in Rerum Novarum:

>>The fact that God has given the earth for the use and enjoyment of the whole human race can in no way be a bar to the owning of private property. For God has granted the earth to mankind in general, not in the sense that all without distinction can deal with it as they like, but rather that no part of it was assigned to any one in particular, and that the limits of private possession have been left to be fixed by man's own industry, and by the laws of individual races.

I think, however, that there are at least three general senses of ownership.

The first sense is what Pope Leo means when he talks about β€œ[possessing] things…merely for temporary and momentary use, as other living things do” that we have in common with animals. These material goods are the goods that we actually have in our possession at this very moment, using at this particular moment, or are cons
