Paul Lafargue

The Greeks in their era of greatness had only contempt for work: their slaves alone were permitted to labor: the free man knew only exercises for the body and mind. And so it was in this era that men like Aristotle, Phidias, Aristophanes moved and breathed among the people; it was the time when a handful of heroes at Marathon crushed the hordes of Asia, soon to be subdued by Alexander. The philosophers of antiquity taught contempt for work, that degradation of the free man, the poets sang of idleness, that gift from the Gods: O Melibae Deus nobis haec otia fecit.

"A strange delusion possesses the working classes of the nations where capitalist civilization holds its sway. This delusion drags in its train the individual and social woes which for two centuries have tortured sad humanity. This delusion is the love of work, the furious passion for work, pushed even to the exhaustion of the vital force of the individual and his progeny. Instead of opposing this mental aberration, the priests, the economists and the moralists have cast a sacred halo over work. Blind and finite men, they have wished to be wiser than then-God; weak and contemptible men, they have presumed to rehabilitate what their God had cursed . . . Our epoch has been called the century of work. It is in fact the century of pain, misery and corruption." -Paul LaFargue

The Right to Be Lazy by Paul Lafargue

Like Christ, the doleful personification of ancient slavery, the men, the women and the children of the proletariat have been climbing painfully for a century up the hard Calvary of pain; for a century compulsory toil has broken their bones, bruised their flesh, tortured their nerves; for a century hunger has torn their entrails and their brains. O Laziness, have pity on our long misery! O Laziness, mother of the arts and noble virtues, be thou the balm of human anguish!

El derecho a la pereza. Paul Lafargue, 1880.

Karl Marx e Jules Guesde 1880

r/WEC Adopt A Driver, 2021 LM24 - Get Involved! [Details Within!]

#Welcome to an experiment

Everyone knows the big names when it comes to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Drivers like the Kevin Estre's and Kazuki Nakajima's and the Nicolas Lapierre's and the like can bring fans in based on their star power alone. But what about when Pierre Ehret sets his best lap of the weekend? Or Dwight Merriman actually makes a pass on track? Who will cheer for them?

That's why this year at /r/WEC, we're offering you the chance to Adopt a Driver! Become their 1-person cheer squad! Their hype guy, their voice of reason. Put them in the spotlight like you would your child, because every driver who makes it to the 24 Hours of Le Mans deserves that achievement to be recognised! This goes doubly for the Bronze and Silver rated drivers, who have invested time, effort, and in some cases lots of money to even make it to the grid!

##What do we do if we adopt a driver?

Before track action starts, you'll be given an opportunity to introduce your driver, and at the end of each day there'll be a post-day discussion, giving you the chance to update us on your adopted driver. How did they go? Were they comfortable in the car? Did they even get a drive? Did they look good on new tyres or focussed on race pace? Let us know! Get us excited so we can all share in the excitement of this event!

##How do I adopt a driver?

Listed below are all the non-platinum rated drivers, listed by class. Simply comment below with the driver you'd like to adopt and you will officially become their adopted parent!

###BUT

It is on a first-in basis, so if someone's already picked them ahead of you, unfortunately you miss out. However with over 60 entries amassing 180+ drivers, there's plenty of opportunities to adopt!

This experiment will only work if you get involved, so if you adopt a driver, make sure to drop a comment in the threads through the week, share their story, and turn it into an event!
