Is the GroundHog (marmota monax) commonly called a "Marmot" by canadians?

Here's an utterly banal question for you lads

here in the great nation of murrica, our vernacular refers to the marmota monax almost exclusively as the "GroundHog"; our citezens call it that, our media calls them that, and if you were to head to a national park and read a "common species" sign it would read "The GroundHog (marmota monax), also called the "woodchuck" or "whistlepig", is a common large rodent native to the northern united states and almost all of canada...."

However upon traveling to some canadian parks and reading around, it seems most canadians simply call the marmota monax the "marmot", dropping the last word and letter. While some people in america also use the word "marmot", those people are usually recent immigrants.

So if a canadian were to complain to the park service about a gang of roving groundhog marauders, would he use marmot, groundhog or perhaps neither? And if neither, what would he call the animal?

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Dropped my best ever dad joke & no one was around to hear it

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

I said "hey look, an escaPEA"

No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!

Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies πŸ˜‚

A study of Patrat's design, why he's adorable, and where it went wrong [OC]

You think Patrat is horrifying right? A classic example of a design gone bad, with it's huge bulbous dead eyes it couldn't possibly be cute. I'm here to show you that you're wrong, and Patrat has been misunderstood for ten years. Remember learning that Cradily's eyes are inside its "mouth", not the yellow circles on top of it's head? Remember learning that Armaldo's eyes are on the side of it's head, not the red parts on its face? Let me tell you about Patrat's eyes.

All artwork and game footage in this post is OC based on official artwork. All text is [OC]. All external links are either Wikipedia or Bulbapedia. I don't often make posts like this so hopefully it formats okay.

TLDR Look at the pictures. Patrat is adorable.

This gif shows Patrat in his very first appearance in Pokemon Black and White, 2010. Pokemon Black and White had animated sprites, with eyes that blinked during combat, and closed when the pokemon slept. Look at Patrat blinking here.

GIF of Patrat in Pokemon White

Do you see it?

Single frames of Patrat in Pokemon White

THE COLOURED PARTS ARE NOT HIS EYES.

Patrat's eyes, as originally designed, are only the little black dots. This is also true for Watchog. You can see this for yourself on an original cart, an emulated cart, or even Youtube game footage!

The coloured markings are part of the fur pattern, intended to make this cute little rodent look intimidating to other Pokemon. Combined with the bioluminescence mentioned in the Pokedex entries, these markings can glow and allow Patrat to use moves like Hypnosis.

The design stayed this way in BW2, but was misunderstood by the anime artists and the 3D artists. When Patrat was converted into a model for the 3DS era this brilliant aspect of the design was lost. Patrat is now a misunderstood bug-eyed monster.

Let's see what Patrat and Watchog look like without the facial markings around the eyes....
