I've only been surfing 6 months and am self-taught. By no means do I consider myself advanced, but I have fun and I'm pretty proud of my progression so far.

Unfortunately, I'm at the stage where you want to get that misguided cockiness; i.e. "I can catch a wave and ride down the line so I basically know everything." Today my local break was bigger surf and (naturally) more crowded than I'm used to. That, paired with my false sense of experience, led to me making a big mistake.

Somewhere along my 6 month surfing journey, I read that when "absolutely necessary," one can ditch their board and swim under a bigger wave breaking on top of you. I've seen other surfers do it and have myself in bigger swells. After today, I will never intentionally do it again.

I had just finished a wave and was paddling back to the lineup when a wave started to peak right on top of me. To my right, a surfer on the wave was flying straight towards me. Because of the bad habit I've developed, I instinctively bailed. In the moment, I felt like I was just avoiding getting slammed into. When I resurfaced it was clear that she'd hit my board and wiped out, justifiably fuming at me. I was on an 8' hard top and absolutely should have paddled back out in a less crowded spot, turtle rolled, or at the VERY least just hung onto my board.

"The waves are just too big for me to get through without bailing." Then go out on smaller days.

"But I'm always in someone's way no matter what." Then go out on less crowded days.

"I'm using a soft top, nobody will get hurt." Don't build bad habits for when you progress to a hard top.

I've watched hours of YouTube and read countless articles on etiquette and tips for how to properly do certain things in the water. There's no excuse for my kookiness other than just being lazy and inconsiderate. I've heard of situations like this knocking people unconscious and killing them. Don't be like me today, and don't be afraid to graciously correct newer surfers doing the same thing!!

TLDR: Don't bail, people will get hurt eventually.
