Hello,
I'm not new to colouring my hair with Henna, I've done it several times so far and I'm usually quite happy with the results. My hair is a fairly dark brown and it has never been coloured with any other product. I use the mahogony colour by njd cosmetics, which I get in local shops.
Now I have several questions.
is this a good henna brand? I've never had problems with it, no irritations, the colour is pretty consistent and it's very easy to get. These are the listed ingredients Lawsonia Inermis (Henna) Leaf Extract and Sodium Picramate .
I want to change my routine up a bit and darken the colour. I've already done some research and mixing a bit of indigo into it is a good way of darkening the red. The ingredients listed for the brands black henna are Indigofera Tinctoria Leaf Powder and Lawsonia Inermis (Henna) Leaf Extract. Would this be a good powder to mix?
how do i get my henna paste to be a better smoother consistency? I've tried more or less water but it's always very clumpy, so drops of it fall to the floor.
and lastly what can I mix into the paste to get better results?
Thank you for your answers
Hi fellow dyers,
I recently got into natural dyes and quite successfully so far (wild blackberries, avocado pits, walnuts, madder, etc.). So obviously I wanted to take it to the next level and try my hand at making my own indigo vat. I did a lot of reading and decided to follow Michel Garcia's natural method, using crystallised fructose and calcium hydroxide (1-3-2 ratio). Lastly, I'm using this as my indigo powder, which I found at an Arabic store.

It is henna BUT the chemical composition at the back says "indigofera tinctoria" and the color of the powder is green (not blue). So first question is: can I use that?
I went ahead and tried to reduce the indigo in a mason jar. I mixed 10g of indigo with 75% alcohol and some hot water, turning it into a paste. Then I prepared my mason jar with some hot water. I then poured my indigo paste into the jar and proceeded to add my 30g of fructose first and then my 20g of calcium hydroxide. I mixed it in, making sure not to bring in too much air. I didn't paid particular attention to the temperature and let it to rest for the night, without closing the jar. The result seemed decent, I had a copper/shimmery layer at the top and some blue bubbles (but very little). I had a yellow/green-ish color, which turned more into a brownish color, which I read was normal.
can't see the copper/shimmery texture but it was there, albeit light, the next morning
Next morning, I tried to dip a piece of fabric in. Left it for about 3min, tried not to let it drip back into the mason jar and then rinsed it in water. The fabric was yellow-green coming out of the jar, but when I rinsed it it looked like the water rinsed away the very very little amount of indigo there was on it. I tried again with another piece of fabric and no rinsing, just letting it oxydize. But it's like nothing happened, the fabric is still the same color (natural cotton, scoured and mordanted). And I also tried with another piece and rinsing in vinegar and that did absolutely nothing.
So what am I doing wrong? Not waiting long enough? Not red
... keep reading on reddit β‘Hey guys, I'm trying to get into dyeing and I've got a bunch of indigofera tinctoria plants in my garden that I'd really like to dye with. However, I can't find instructions on how to do the 1-2-3 method with fresh indigo leaves instead of already reduced powder.
Could someone here point me towards the right direction? Thanks!!
Symbolized in the form of a rainbow, the before and after of Mesoamerica is represented within the Florentine Codex - in which twenty highly experienced indigenous painters worked, four of them masters in their craft -, I share the illustration of the corresponding folio and the employed pigments according to their order:
Artistically speaking, the combination of the European aesthetic with the Mesoamerican one portrays the new eclectic nature of the native people.

About one year ago I started dying my hair with a brown henna-based dye (list of ingredients at the end of the post) and I've been quite happy with it. I wanted to cover some gray hairs and this is the closest I can get to my natural hair color and the color lasts much longer than with regular hair dyes.
Now I would like to try a pure henna dye, since I've had my hair red before and liked how it looked on me. I was wondering, in case I eventually get tired of the red color, how easy is it to go back to my natural hair color with the brown dye I've mentioned above? I know pure henna is tricky so I don't know how these natural pigments work: will the darker ones manage to get into my hair and change my hair color or will the pure bright-red henna pigment overpower it so it will not show as much?
I know I probably can't use chemical hair dyes anymore on my hair right now (I'm not sure if the dye I've used contains any metallic salts but I wouldn't risk it anyway). More generally, is there any way to "cover up" pure henna in your hair with other natural pigments?
Ingredients of the brown henna-based hair dye that I'm using:
Indigofera Tinctoria (Indigo) Leaf Powder, Lawsonia Inermis (Henna) Leaf Powder, Cassia Auriculata Leaf Powder, Emblica Officinalis Fruit Powder, Emblica alba powder, Azadirachta indica leaf powder (Neem)

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.
If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.
Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
