I painted this memorial portrait of my friend’s hyacinth macaw and figured I’d share it here. His name was Blu and he was rescued from a bad situation where he was used as a breeder. Heartbreaking that so many of these gentle giants live in inadequate homes.

As the largest of all parrots by length , the hyacinth macaws are 95 to 100 cm long (3 ft 3 inches), although half that length is tail. They weigh approximately 3.5 pounds & their wingspans are from 117 to 127 cm. Listed as Endangered by IUCN due to habitat loss & over-collection for the pet trade.

I saw this adorable hyacinth macaw at the pet store the other day. She kept coming closer to me and it seemed like she wanted me to hold her because she walked to the edge of her perch and kept putting her foot out (I was putting my arm up slowly to see how she’d react). I miss her so much 😭

Ah yes that time during a manic episode when I went door to door to every place I could find (houses, grocery stores, boutiques, etc.) in my city and asked them to buy me a hyacinth macaw :)
