What are your thoughts on the philosopher Hans Hermann Hoppe
Sometimes ancaps try to defend self-ownership by appealing to Hoppe's argumentation ethics. Under Hoppe's view, anyone arguing is committing to the idea of self-ownership, because in order to argue, some body parts must be activated (such as vocal chords or hand muscles). Because of this, the person making an argument is also making the implicit claim that they own those body parts, and therefore themselves, even when trying to argue against self-ownership. There are several problems with this reasoning :
- The act of using something does not commit the user to an implicit claim that they own that thing. I am using the sidewalk everyday when I go outside, that does not mean I have to defend the view that I own the sidewalk.
- Even if the commitment was there, it does not make the claim true. If a person makes the claim that they own the moon, the claim is either true or false, but its truthness does not depend on them saying it, explicitly or implicitly.
- Hoppe's reasoning does not lead to full self-ownership. We just own some parts of ourselves according to Hoppe, those that we use to argue, which means we don't have liver-ownership, or stomach-ownership.
- It also does not lead to universal self-ownership. If only beings that argue own themselves, then clearly infants, mentally handicapped people, or people who never argued in their life do not own themselves.
- On a more fundamental level, Hoppe is trying to derive an ought (humans own themselves) from an is (humans argue).
You can still believe in some flavor of self-ownership and argue for anarcho-capitalism, but Hoppe's bizarre route to it is just too flawed.
