How widely spoken did Hellenic languages become in the Seleucid Empire?

I know that the ruling families spoke Greek, but how deep into society did Greek (or other Hellenic languages) reach into society? How did it vary from Egypt to the Levant to Persia to Central Asia?

Emperor Zeno (474-475) was born as Tarasicodissa, reflecting his Isaurian heritage. I've read that Isaurian is an Anatolian language, descended from Luwian during the Iron Age. If so, and if the language family survived at least till the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, are there any resources on it? Are there any resources at all on late Anatolian languages from the Hellenic or Roman periods?

[8th Grade Language Arts/New Jersey] New teacher, have an activity planned for tomorrow as a pre-cursor to "The Miracle Worker" play about Hellen Keller. Would like to hear opinions on whether or not it could be construed as "offensive".

I'm-basically- a first year teacher(started in the middle of last year) in an urban school district at a middle school. We're starting "The Miracle Worker" next week, which is a play about Helen Keller's life. For those who don't know, Hellen Keller is renowned for being deaf and blind, and still achieving a ton of goals despite this.

Anyway, while her story is inspiring and excellent, the play is...a bit dry and a bit of a challenge for 8th graders. I like to do "engaging"/fun pre-reading activities to get everyone a little more enthusiastic for the subject matter.

For this case, I had an idea that students would have a partner. Their partner puts on a blind fold, and I give the non-blindfolded partner a word(small words, like dog, cat, fish). Without speaking, the non-blindfolded partner must find a way to communicate to their blindfolded partner what their word is.

I'm going to offer them suggestions for how to do this, the two options mainly being:

  1. Cut a piece of paper into 30 pieces. If you give your blindfolded partner one piece, that's "A", two pieces is "B", three pieces is "C", etc. Obviously this would be harder as they get into the later letters and need 15+pieces of paper.

  2. Non-blindfolded partner arranges the papers into the shape of whatever their word is(Dog, cat, fish, etc) and the blindfolded partner must carefully feel the paper pieces to determine what shape they're in(or the student can actually spell out the word with the papers and the blindfolded student can feel to determine.)

In both cases, I would allow the students to determine their method of communicating before the blindfold comes on. I also don't expect most students to get it, so it will be more of a participation grade than an actual "your partner got it, you get an A!" grade.

I don't know exactly how this activity will go, like I said, I'm very new and haven't tried this type of activity before. Part of me thinks it sounds better in my head than it will go during execution, but we'll see. Live and learn.

To my main purpose of this post, I think the activity will be a good way to show the students how frustrating and how difficult it can be when you can't communicate with someone via sight or sound. I want them to really understand how difficult that makes life in general, and just how much Keller had to overcome.

Do you think this lesson could be dangerous as "offensive" or "unproductive"? I don't have any scheduled observations or anything, but I'm non-t

Hellen Keller describes what it was like before she discovered language

Before my teacher came to me, I did not know that I am. I lived in a world that was a no-world. I cannot hope to describe adequately that unconscious, yet conscious time of nothingness. I did not know that I knew aught, or that I lived or acted or desired. I had neither will nor intellect. I was carried along to objects and acts by a certain blind natural impetus. I had a mind which caused me to feel anger, satisfaction, desire... When I wanted anything I liked,--ice-cream, for instance, of which I was very fond,--I had a delicious taste on my tongue (which, by the way, I never have now), and in my hand I felt the turning of the freezer. I made the sign, and my mother knew I wanted ice-cream. I "thought" and desired in my fingers.

I'm interested to know if there was still somewhat a Hellenistic cultural and linguistic presence in Bactria centuries after the fall of the Greco-Bactrian kingdom. Would the local Greek dialect be peppered with words that I'm unfamiliar with? And what would the culture be like?

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Is King Boo an imposter?

Note: English is not my first language

Today I want to talk about King Boo.

King Boo (most games)

This is King Boo. As we can see, he's just like any other Boo, only distinguishable by his larger size and the simple crown he wears. He rules the Boos of the Mushroom Kingdom and is one of Bowser's allies (Bowser even sometimes considers him a minion of his). He has the abilities any Boo would have, but additionally, he has the power of shapeshifting (seen in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, for example). Apart from that, nothing special.

Wait a second… Let's start over, shall we?

King Boo (Luigi's Mansion series)

This is King Boo, Master of Illusion and ruler of all Boos. He's not like any other Boo, his eyes glow purple, his tongue is blue and he wears a crown with a big pink/red gem on top. His size can vary (which is probably one of his powers): he's sometimes the size of a regular Boo, and sometimes he's more than twice the size of Luigi. He's an expert at creating illusions, and he has all sorts of paranormal powers.

It sounds hard to believe these two characters are actually one and the same, doesn't it? Well, perhaps they aren't.

Introducing: my theory. I believe that the real King Boo is the Master of Illusion we see in the Luigi's Mansion series, while the less powerful and ordinary-looking King Boo is just an impostor; one of Bowser's false kings (like King Goomba/Goomboss, for example) Bowser probably heard that the real King Boo was defeated and then tried to replace him with his own King Boo, who is of course loyal to Bowser.

Why do I think this makes sense? Well…

Note: in order to make this less confusing, I will refer to the two versions of King Boo as "Bowser's King Boo" and "Master of Illusion" respectively.

First of all, their appearance is drastically different. Bowser's King Boo is literally just a Big Boo with a Crown, while the Master of Illusion looks extremely different.

Secondly, The Master of Illusion never seems to care about Bowser at all (aside from using a fake Bowser in Luigi's Mansion). Furthermore, he's much more powerful than Bowser himself, so why would he accept to be one of his underlings?

Lastly, We know for a fact that the Master o

A Guide to the Royal Family of Denmark

Same disclosure as always: these paste a little weird from the last time I posted them so sorry for any formatting issues. Also, some information and/or links may now be out of date.

Queen Margrethe II (b. 1940)

Margrethe is the Queen of Denmark, the supreme authority of the Church of Denmark, and the Commander-in-Chief of the Danish Defense. She takes no part in party politics and does not express any political opinions. She has the right to vote however chooses not to exercise that privilege.

She became heir presumptive to her father in 1953 when a constitutional amendment allowed women to inherit the throne. When it became clear that Queen Ingrid would have no more children (they had 3 girls), her father capitalized on his popularity to begin the constitutional change in 1947. She became Queen when her father, King Frederick IX, died in 1972. She is the first female monarch of Denmark since Margrethe I (1375-1412).

Interesting Facts:

  • Her nickname is β€œDaisy”
  • She is an accomplished artist, painter, and seamstress.
  • Created the illustrations, under pseudonym Inahild Grathmer, for the Danish editions of The Lord of the Rings.
  • Loves costume design and designs costumes for the Royal Danish Ballet as well as Danish movies.
  • Often designs her own clothes and is known for her colorful and at times eccentric clothing choices.
  • She is publicly known as a chain smoker, however has chosen not to smoke in public since 2006.
  • She is a gifted linguist, fluent in Danish, Swedish, French, German, and English.

Soooo... on ancestry, gate-keeping and DNA...

I write this with deep sorrow in my heart. It's about ancestry, gate-keeping and what kind of believes people bring into this community. Many new people here ask and are unsure about their ancestry. Some are white, some are PoC or Black.

I often see people here who assure them that when they are white, that they almost certainly have ties to scandinavian ancestry, anglo-saxon ancestry or germanic ancestry, just because they are white.

PoC and Black people get said, that it doesn't matter where they or their ancestors come from.

And this is problematic in my opinion.

I want to motivate you to reflect yourself and how you approach such questions for help and reassurance.

If a person tells you that they are white, english, scandinavian, german or whatever from which you think it might be tied to any germanic paganism, overthink your own prejeduices. You cannot know it. You may never know it.

The person's ancestry doesn't matter as much as it would for a PoC or a Black person.

It may seem harmless, but confirming the concerns of the askers can also lay a fundament for blood and soil ideology.

Yes. You hear right. And I really mean it. If the calmed person thinks, that it's okay to start worshipping, practicing and being pagan, because their ancestry is "okay", it creates a two tier morale standard in our community.

And as a progressive and inclusive pagan I wish, that we answer this often asked question for everyone in the same matter.

I don't assume y'all mean it in an evil manner. However, we all can fall into dangerous fascist dogwhistles, rhetorics and ideology.

Let's do it better.

Thank you for your attention.

P.P.S.: Since this post looks worse than I imagine the sacking of paris was (Joke btw), I might use my privilege as OP to edit this post to add some stuff.

I want to add that I showed this text an english lector who is hellenic pagan faeself and besides some grammatical issues declared that this text is perfectly understandable and those of you who have english as a first language, should be quiet and speak my first language as good as I do.

Even further, fae added that it's not understandable that so many people here get "triggered" into bursting out into white tears and think this text is an attack to your oh so holy "germanic tie by blood and DNA". However, this still is blood and soil ideology you use there and you create a two tier hierarchy by dividing by PoC and you, you are sooo special because you have ance

How widespread is the belief that Spartans (and other Greeks) were actually Illyrians among Albanians?

Disclaimer: No trolling. no baiting.

I live in Germany and met the other day an Albanian who told me Sparta comes from the albanian word for "sword" and that it was "300 of his men who fought against the persians".

He also told me that Serbians (and greeks and italians) are actually descendants of Illyrians and that Illyrians built the Parthenon. He was from Kosovo btw.

So I am just interested if these are actually common beliefs among Albanians?

Tbh if this is common it just seems like national myths in order to strengthen the national identity - but I am open for any sources supporting these claims (and also if we can say that albanians really are the descendants of illyrians, since afaik we simply don't know)
