A list of puns related to "Hawaiian Dancing"
I'm not a Native Hawaiian, but I'm extremely interested in educating myself in the history of as well as learning the art of hula. However, I want to make sure I am not culturally appropriating by studying it in the first place. I'm Native American, and I realize most Native American people would find it very inappropriate for a non-native to study Fancy Dance or Jingle Dance and preform at a Powwow due to the cultural/spiritual significance of these dances and their histories. Comparing these two art forms (and the sure outsider participant taboo I know about at least one) makes me hesitant to begin my study of hula, especially as I know it has it's origins in Hawaiian chants and storytelling and would not want to cause disrespect by my practicing it.
TL;DR: What is the general perspective here, is it wrong for a non-Native Hawaiian to respectfully learn about, practice, and perhaps someday preform 'auana (modern/non-traditional) style hula?
