I'm Cybrxkhan, creator of the Regional Immersion and Cultural Enrichment (RICE) mod, which adds simple "Flavor Packs'' to different parts of the world (Steam link). I just released a new update that includes two new flavor packs, Sus: Door of the Sahara, and Guanche: The Fortunate Isles, so you can play them right now! I covered the Sus flavor pack in the previous dev diary, so today, I'll cover the Guanche.

The Guanche flavor pack was made in collaboration with and is fully integrated into BlackEmperor’s Africa Plus mod (or BAP). BAP's new update has been coordinated with mine, so it should be out shortly within a day or so - I highly recommend it if you’re interested in more flavor for Africa, so check it out!

Lastly, feel free to check out my official website or discord for more info on my mods.

Additional Sus Flavor

Before I talk about the Guanche, I want to mention a new addition to the Sus Flavor Pack since I wrote my previous Sus dev diary. Pretty sus, innit?

There is now an additional third decision you can take to raise Sijilmasa's Prosperity: Wall the Tafilalt Oasis. Though only remnants of it survive today, the extensive walls and its twelve or so gates originally surrounded much of the oasis Sijilmasa was in, and not just the main settlement. The decision is available if you have the Fortified Oases perk from the new Trans-Saharan Trade Dynastic Legacy discussed before, and it adds a county modifier to Sijilmasa that provides defensive bonuses called Walls and Gates of Tafilalt Oasis. It also gives you some renown and adds a fame level.

New Faiths and Cultures

Now onto the Guanche! A new Guanche culture has been added to the Berber culture group, and is present on the Canary Islands at game start (added via hidden event as always).

TIL The Canary Islands are named after dogs, not birds. The name Islas Canarias is likely derived from the Latin name Canariae Insulae, meaning "Islands of the Dogs". What are some good books and papers on the Guanche (natives of the Canary Islands)

A few weeks ago, I stumbled upon a small book I got on Tenerife about the Guanche, and it reignited my curiosity, so I wanted to ask: can you recommend any good books or papers (or any material really) about the Guanche? I'm especially interested in religion and culture, but anything at all would be nice. Language isn't an issue, as long as it's a European one. Thank you

Questions about Cuban genealogy- Iberia/Guanches? Slavery in Cuba? Taíno?

I recently got DNA results back and was wondering if anyone can give me insight on- Islamic rule over Iberia (1% Arab) and the Guanche (2% North African). Information on the Guanche (the aboriginals of the Canary Islands) is actually pretty hard to find. I’ve also often wondered about the life of ancient Iberians, and the colonization of the Canary Islands. (80% Iberian, mostly Canary Islands)

Slavery in Cuba (13% Sub Saharan African) is sadly also a probability in my blood line. I think both sides of my family owned sugar cane plantations at one point (at least my mom’s family in Santiago) and there are rumors of a French ancestor (Truffin) having to flee Haiti during the revolution. But I haven’t been able to trace anything.

Then I have a bit under 4% indigenous. Cubans typically have far less indigenous than other Latinos. My dad said the Taíno in Cuba killed themselves rather than be taken as slaves. Idk how true that is.

Any information or suggestions are appreciated. ☺️

The Guanches

Today, Guanches are considered a lost culture. What remains of their language, Guanche – a few expressions, vocabulary words and the proper names of ancient chieftains still borne by certain families– exhibits positive similarities with the Berber languages.

Spanish colonization and the slave trade had all but wiped out these natives of the island chain. If they didn't die fighting against the invaders, they were decimated by diseases introduced by the European conquerors.

Archeological and DNA-based research has proven that the first inhabitants of the Canary Islands were Berbers (also known as Amazigh), a people who extended throughout North Africa more than 3,000 years ago, occupying what is today the area from Libya to Morocco.

The islands were visited by a number of peoples within recorded history. The Numidians, Phoenicians, and Carthaginians knew of the islands and made frequent visits, including expeditions dispatched from Mogador by Juba. The Romans occupied northern Africa and visited the Canaries between the 1st and 4th centuries AD, judging from Roman artifacts found on and near the island of Lanzarote. These show that Romans did trade with the Canaries, though there is no evidence of them ever settling there. Archaeology of the Canaries seems to reflect diverse levels of technology, some differing from the Neolithic culture that was encountered at the time of conquest.
