Using Geert Hofstede style dimensions to describe and solidify your cultures.

IF you're like me, you find it easy to think of specific items of cultural heritage for fictional regions (stuff like rituals and traditions, titles of rulers or religious leaders, style of music, naming conventions, etc) but hard to put these things together in a way that makes sense. You want characters that share a cultural heritage to behave in somewhat consistent ways.

Enter Geert-Hofstede dimensions, five categories created by a famous sociologist that allow one to analyze a culture and possibly make assumptions about how an individual from that culture will behave. Of course, one's heritage does not define their entire personality but it undeniably impacts it. On to the dimensions, which for the record are measured on a scale from 0-120.

1. Power Distance Index

The degree to which individuals in a society accept inequality in wealth and power. The higher the rating, the more a person accepts and respects those higher than them in a hierarchy. High/low PDI regions: Japan, the middle east/Austria, New Zealand

2. Individualism

In a highly individualistic society, people are expected to look after themselves and possibly their immediate family. In the opposite, a collective society, it's generally thought that large networks with close ties are necessary to enjoy life and to endure hardship - if you lose your job or some other fate befalls you, your friends, family, possibly people you don't even know will all pitch in to support you financially and otherwise, and help you recover. High/low individualistic regions: USA, the UK/Indonesia, Ecuador

3. Masculinity

While it's somewhat controversial to describe behaviour according to gender stereotypes, it helps convey the point. A masculine society values assertiveness, accumulation of material possessions, having social power/status, and so on. A feminine society believes that a person should be measured by their capacity to care for others, selflessness, and devotion to personal relationships. High/low masculinity regions: Germany, USA/Sweden, Costa Rica

4. Uncertainty Avoidance Index

How much does a society tolerate or encourage ambiguity or adventure, and how much does it seek to precisely define and predict future events? A high UAI culture usually adopts strict rules, both in terms of laws and social conduct. Additionally it's thought that high UAI regions are more devoted to religion, especially if their religion claims to be the only true one. High/low UAI regions: Greec

Hrvati according to Geert Hofstede

  • (52) Orientare pe Termen Lung (Long Term Orientation - LTO).

Najdalej do Szwedów, Duńczyków, Singapurczyków

Spain 32, Turkey 38, Italy 39, Morocco 39, Czech Rep 40, Greece 40, France 40, Arab countries 40, Malta 43, Croatia 44, Brazil 44, Hungary 45,
Argentina 45 , Romania 46, Serbia 47,

Portugal 49, Bulgaria 52, Iran 53, Peru 54, Belgium 55, Bangladesh 56, India 57, Africa East 59, Slovenia 60, Thailand 60, Russia 62, Pakistan 63,
Japan 63, Germany 64, Philippines 64, Chile 66, Finland 68, Canada 70

Switzerland 72, Estonia 72, Indonesia 72, Lithuania 75, U.S.A. 75, Australia 75, Austria 75, Latvia 76, Colombia 77, Hong Kong 78, Mexico 78, El Salvador 79, Taiwan 79, Korea South 80, New Zealand 81, Ireland 81, Vietnam 81, Malaysia 82, Slovak Rep 82, Africa West 82, Great Britain 84, Trinidad and Tobago 84, Norway 84, Netherlands 88, China 90, Venezuela 92

Singapore 103, Denmark 108, Sweden 108

Culture Building Template

With the release of Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything for D&D 5th Edition, we’ve got some official rules that break characters away from race-based abilities and let us customize based on the society the character grew up in and the skills they acquired during life before adventuring. So no matter what race you've chosen, the culture you're a part of is giving you that ability score increase or that weapon proficiency; that language or that religion. What does this mean for your character’s outlook on life, their values, their favorite foods, or style of dress? All this is culture, an expression of this society's joys, struggles, creativity, and hopes. Rather than just creating analogues to existing cultures though, how do you create a unique culture for your world?

The template provided here abstracts four main factors that define a culture: climate and resources, religion and values, family and social structure, and the arts. (Two example cultures are provided below are also available in the template as defaults).

1. Climate and Resources

Clothing, food, and homes: the climate and terrain your culture exists in establishes a lot. Clothing will be appropriate to the temperature and weather. The fabrics, leathers, or furs available will be determined by what plants and animals are in the area, with other materials having to be brought in by trade. The food the people eat will likewise be determined by what they can grow. Is seafood available? Spices? What’s the staple grain in this area? And similarly for architecture: what’s available to build with? Are the buildings designed for keeping cool, or handling monsoon seasons?

2. Religion and Values

The major thing to keep in mind in this section is that each culture will bring its own traditions and expressions into the local religion. This may result in different sects or denominations of a more broadly followed faith. There will be some common constants in the culture, the main tenets of the faith itself, but also present will be a unique set of social norms and values. To establish our unique social norms, we can steal some categories from Dutch social psychologist Geert Hofstede. Now, we don’t want to use exactly what he said because his metrics are colonialist and problematic in several ways, so I'll change some of them into descriptors instead of judgements. This gives us the following set o

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Just because it's a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke

Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT NSFW, THIS IS ABOUT LONG JOKES, BLONDE JOKES, SEXUAL JOKES, KNOCK KNOCK JOKES, POLITICAL JOKES, ETC BEING POSTED IN A DAD JOKE SUB

Try telling these sexual jokes that get posted here, to your kid and see how your spouse likes it.. if that goes well, Try telling one of your friends kid about your sex life being like Coca cola, first it was normal, than light and now zero , and see if the parents are OK with you telling their kid the "dad joke"

I'm not even referencing the NSFW, I'm saying Dad jokes are corny, and sometimes painful, not sexual

So check out r/jokes for all types of jokes

r/unclejokes for dirty jokes

r/3amjokes for real weird and alot of OC

r/cleandadjokes If your really sick of seeing not dad jokes in r/dadjokes

Punchline !

Edit: this is not a post about NSFW , This is about jokes, knock knock jokes, blonde jokes, political jokes etc being posted in a dad joke sub

Edit 2: don't touch the thermostat
