Coming up in the week:
Iβve had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to be a scientist, but thereβs so many types of science that it was really hard to tell. Anyways, after research, I found that Forensic science is super interesting to me! Iβm about that age anyways where I should be thinking about my plans for the future, as stressful as that is.
Iβm wondering about the general requirements to become a forensic scientist, just to work on that field. What sorts of schooling/knowledge would I need? Any recommendations for volunteer work if needed/possible? I know that thereβs different paths that a forensic scientist could take, and while Iβm not 100% sure Iβm considering toxicology since thatβs whatβs of interest to me.
Advice is also appreciated! Extremely actually. Iβm 17 years old, not quite done high school yet but in my final year (presumably, sometimes people go back for another year. unsure about that for myself, because on one hand Iβd like to be done, but on the other hand I might need that extra year). Still have a lot to think about, and a bit of time before I really start considering things. I also live in Ontario Canada, since I know information can sometimes vary from area to area.
Thanks in advance!
I've done a little bit of research on where to start but everything only talks about after highschool. I'm a junior in highschool and next year I'm taking a forensic science class but I wanna know what I can do now. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated
Iβm currently an undergraduate sophomore in college majoring in Biology and am interested in forensic science. I did a little research in the field and would love information/advice from someone currently in the field.
This happened in Jan 2018, but I just discovered this subreddit.
I have a masterβs in genetics and biotech. Finding a job was depressing because I was overqualified for tech jobs but didnβt have a PhD to get the research or teaching jobs posted around me. I had spent the last two years seeing my wife and two kids only on weekends as they stayed with her parents while I went to school near my parents or spent time on my research in the neighboring state.
I aimed and got a forensic scientist position with my state. At $22 an hour with benefits, it was the best I could hope for. I lost it after 4 months to a reason that makes me angry to this day.
The two background things before the event:
My schedule was not defined on my first day so I asked. Managers and fellow techs around me said we all just make sure we get our 80 hours in β no strict schedule. We did have time cards and I wrote everything down exactly. Some people would go skiing and come in a few hours later, for example.
Training was disorganized. They were hiring 6 new forensic scientist positions because funding increased. I was the first hired. The rest were across the next several months as good candidates were found. I was sat down on the first day and given a network folder full of things to read. But I had no HR orientation or training on how to use benefits, PTO, or things like that. It was so bad that after a month, I made a list of things I should have known from day 1 as I picked them up along the way. So when the next position was filled and they sat the new FS down like they did with me, I introduced myself and asked if she was doing okay or if she was a little lost. She said she was completely lost. So I sent her the file of all my tips. She was grateful. I did this with the next 2 FS positions they filled in the following weeks and months following up to my incident. There were 3 managers over the DNA FSs (Homicide, sexual assault, and training/quality). All new FSs were trained under the latter, but I saw her the least. She had odd hours. Besides the massive reading list we got for training, she maybe βmanagedβ me about 3 times with a visit to my desk. She waited until about 4 of the 6 positions were filled before she got to doing power point trainings right before the holidays. So we had about 3 of those. Besides that, all I could do was read and read because I was not qualified or trained to do anything else.
Work culture was nice. I just rarely saw my manger.
Now fo
... keep reading on reddit β‘For anyone unfamiliar, Dr. Henry Lee is a rather famous forensic scientist who's largely known for his involvement in various major and/or widely-publicized cases. He is (or was?) considered a bit of a miracle worker when it came to finding and evaluating evidence that others could not, and was often called in as an expert to "work his magic," leading to multiple major convictions.
The most recent news I can find regarding legal accusations is pretty much all from 2019, when it came out that the Supreme Court ruled that he had "erred" in his testimony during a 1989 murder trial regarding a towel that supposedly had blood on it (it did not, in fact, have any blood on it), and thus led to the exoneration of the 2 men accused of the crime. From what I can tell, he was barely reprimanded for his actions. He has also "allegedly hidden evidence or given incorrect testimony in at least three other cases." I highly recommend checking out the article from The Daily Beast linked below if you haven't read it or are unfamiliar with the situation.
It's unclear how many of the cases he's been involved in led to wrongful convictions - regardless of whether the suspected perpetrator was innocent or not - as a result of his false or misleading testimony and/or forged, ignored, hidden, or destroyed evidence.
I enjoy watching Forensic Files, and often play it as background noise or to listen to while doing other things. The problem is that he's in so many episodes that I find it extremely difficult to watch any of the ones he appears in because I just can't trust him. In my book, his credibility went right out the window in 2019. I always think about all those people he's helped to convict, especially those who were convicted primarily due to evidence that he himself (supposedly) found, collected, processed, and/or testified about.
But he's so high up on the food chain that it seems like he's untouchable. I firmly believe that every single one of his cases should be re-opened, re-examined, and thoroughly analyzed. I know it'd require a lot of time and resources, but no one knows how often he took the law into his own hands, how many people deserve new trials (and what about the people who will never get that chance?), how many innocent people are in jail because of his actions, how many guilty people got away as a result of whatever part he played in their situation, etc.
I think about this, about him, a lot. To be clear, I absolutely recognize that he's an extreme

Hi there! My best friend is leaving the education profession and hoping to enter the forensic science field. I want to get her something for Christmas to support her passion. She's been reading lots of books on forensic science so perhaps books are out of the question. I was thinking of getting her a subscription to Hunt a Killer but quickly realized how ridiculously expensive that was.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!
