Eastern Orthodox is the 2nd largest group after Roman Catholic, but I never even heard of them growing up in the US. Why is their presence here so small?

Any Eastern Catholics here?

If so, what rite are you and do you want to raise your children within your rite (assuming your spouse is of another rite)?

For those who are of a western rite, would you raise your children in the eastern rite of your spouse (if he/she would prefer that)?

Byzantine Britons and the Catholic Conqueror - was England an Eastern Orthodox country between 1054 and 1066?

So, I was on discord earlier today, and a friend forwarded an image to me on this topic. Naturally, such a claim piqued my interest, as I had generally thought that Britain had been on the Catholic side of the Great Schism. As such, my first instinct was to just google the claim and I quite soon found the source of this claim. That is, this article on OrthodoxWiki.

Now, I am not very narrow minded and was willing to seriously research the claims made, but OrthodoxWiki? Really? Is that your source, random person a discord friend knows? Shame on them! But luckily, the article provides us with a SOURCE. And yes, it is a scholarly source. One that... disagrees with them. Laughs all around, I know.

To quote Jack Turner: "Overall, the judgement of most historians has been contrary to the vision put forward by those Orthodox Christians." As he has laid out in his article, whilst there were a few areas where the Anglo-Saxon church seemingly agreed with what would become Eastern Orthodoxy over Catholicism, such as the usage of leavened bread rather than unleavened, this was not unique to Britain in this time, and there is also evidence that unleavened bread was known of in Britain long before then, during the time of Alcuin of York (735-804). Furthermore, as Jack Turner notes, there was some contact between Britain and the Byzantines, but it was "exceedingly rare". Overall, the Anglo-Saxon church aligned more with the Latin church than the Byzantine one.

Now, we come to the other half: the Catholic Conqueror, the leader of the Norman-Papist invasion force that brought an end to the mostly non-existent English Orthodox Church. Indeed, William set out to destroy their traditions and enforce papist heresy on the isles (and if he could go to space, the entire universe, I assume). He claims William set out in 1070 to purge the Anglo-Saxon church of orthodox leaders for purely religious reasons, ending in Archbishop Stigand being removed from this position. With clergy being a major power player in medieval politics, it is likely that William set out to put Normans in influential church positions for political purposes, as a way to cement his power as king of England. However, it must be noted

Why does the Eastern Orthodox church seemingly have so much disdain for the Roman Catholic church?

Hello my dear brothers and sisters in Christ. My question is truly an earnest one and I am here in good faith.

The entirety of my experience thus far is based solely on personal internet conversation or observance, as I've so far only had the pleasure of meeting a singular Orthodox Christian which was, funnily enough, at a talk given by a Catholic priest at a seminary.

Of course you lot view the Roman Catholic church as the schismatic one and we feel the opposite. That said, there seems to be a lot of unresolved anger that those in the Orthodoxy hold against us that we don't share.

Firstly, you are permitted, as per our reckoning, to receive communion in a Roman church, but this and the inverse is strictly forbade in Orthodoxy.

There also seems to be a general consensus that the Catholic church is infiltrated by evil and heresy and as such, I've seen many Orthodox believers say that the schism will never heal, that referring to one another as [fallen away] brothers in Christ is disingenuous and wrong, that the Pope is a heretic, amongst other things.

Let me summate. My question is this: why is there a seemingly one sided disdain for the other half between our two churches?

Monastic Sort of Gay Guy Here. Any Catholic or Eastern Orthodox Guys around?

New here. Would love to connect with other gay men who might practice centering prayer, contemplative prayer, or the monastic office of prayer (Divine Liturgy).

Would love to be able to share this with others. I often make retreats to monasteries but have no real community for the practice out in the everyday world. Currently live in central Ohio. Happy to โ€œcommuneโ€ online.

Would love to hear from you. Prayers for all of you here. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™

How are Eastern Catholics received into Orthodoxy?

What is the process for receiving someone into Orthodoxy from an Eastern Catholic church? Since ECs are already engaging in Orthodox liturgy, it seems like it would be a simple transition for the person making the leap. But would the person still have to go through a process of Orthodox catechetical instruction and then be newly Chrismated and/or baptized?

I was just curious, coming from a Roman Catholic background myself. I know a lot of ECs think of themselves as "Orthodox in communion with Rome," but I don't know how genuine that is in practice. The EC churches seem like a strange no-man's land where people worship like the Orthodox but are still bound to believe Catholic dogma, which I'd think would hinder a full development of an Orthodox phronema.

Is there a fundamental difference between the Latin Catholic and Eastern Orthodox understanding of Christianity?

I know that the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches differ in many ways: the role of Bishops and Patriarchs; the proceeding of the Holy Spirit; clerical celibacy, and much more. The Churches understand these issues differently, though they have the same Church Fathers, the same Bible (mostly), the same Eucharist etc. From where does the difference arise?

I understand that the Latin Church and the Eastern Church were moving away from each other even before the offical Schism in 1054. This indicates to me that the Churches didn't separate on the basis of one issue, and then evolve independantly; it seems that the Churches split earlier. What the reason of this split?

What do Eastern Catholics believe about dogma?

Hi, I'm in RCIA currently and will be confirmed in April. My local parish only has Roman rite churches and so that's were I'll be initiated but I've always been curious about Eastern Catholics and the existence of the Eastern Churches was one of the things that led me to my conversion.

My question more specifically is: Do Eastern Catholics believe in the whole dogma/doctrine hierarchy of truth system and do they have to affirm all the dogmas? Are Eastern Catholics comfortable with papal infallibility? If they're uncomfortable do they believe it anyway for the sake of unity?

Also this is unrelated but there are a few eastern rite churches an hour from where I live would I be welcome in attending their liturgy?

Attending Holy Liturgies of Eastern/Anglican Catholic Churches? Thoughts?

Hello fathers,

I had a discussion with my friend (We're both Roman Catholics) last night about attending Holy Liturgies at Byzantine, Maronite and Anglican Catholic Churches.

I asked if he would like to attend a Maronite service with me this upcoming Sunday and then possibly check out the other rites near us.

He rejected it saying it's not a good idea to be "window shopping" and bouncing around the rites, saying we should stick with the Roman catholic rite.

I replied by saying that my intention wasnt to window shop or switch rites but rather, experience (maybe even just once) the different rites of our fellow catholics so we can appreciate them and perhaps learn something new.

What are your thoughts about our debate?

Catholic Churches in Dallas / Eastern Suburbs with Legitimate Cry Rooms or Nurseries That Are Open

Hi all,

Does anyone know of any Catholic Churches in Dallas or it's Eastern Suburbs (probably not further out than Rockwall etc) that have cry rooms and/or Nurseries for young children or families and their young children during Mass that are (i) actually open, and (ii) not closets or other makeshift space. So far I've only encountered one Church in the area that has this (St. Michael the Archangel in Garland) but I'd like see if there's anything else out there.

Thanks!
