I have been getting cold sores regularly since I was very young. The only topical treatment available at drugstores that is FDA approved to heal them is Abreva, and it is ridiculously expensive (I just bought a .07 oz tube for $21.99). It has Docosanol in it, so I have always looked for alternatives that also have that ingredient. Every other cold sore treatment, even the store brand Abreva, does not have this ingredient. Instead, they aim to just treat the pain and discomfort. Why are there no other treatments that actually help the healing instead of just masking the discomfort? Why do no other treatments have Docosanol, and why is Abreva so expensive? ELI5!
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!

Check my other posts for more info but long story short I have had ghsv2 since 2013. Outbreaks now are infrequent and don’t produce lesions. I reached a nice harmony with it.
Then last year I erupted in herpetic rash all over my upper body, face, and hands, and what seems to be like some mild herpetic folliculitis in some areas. This is occurring on both sides of my body, which would make shingles rare (though not impossible).
I thought maybe I contracted hsv1 (which I have been negative for in the past) and was having a primary infection type reaction (it was so bad at first)....but several months after the worst outbreak in these areas I still don’t have antibodies for hsv1, and the outbreaks in these areas keep recurring, though never as bad as the first time. They respond rapidly to Zovirax.
This to me would indicate that it’s a rare case of ghsv2 manifesting outside of its typical zone, or a rare case of shingles since it is manifesting on both sides of the body.
I saw an infectious disease specialist and she was completely uninterested in exploring my case, since the practical answer no matter what is just less stress and more valtrex. She also had never heard of abreva/docosanol or herpetic folliculitis (she tried to tell me folliculitis can only be bacterial, when there are fungal and viral versions too).
It sucks having to just embrace a mystery of why this is happening. I would like to know for sure for sure what type of herpes is manifesting in these areas, but I would have to get a legitimate biopsy...because my symptoms are typically limited to “dry” lesions that can’t be swabbed. I’ve gotten a water blister twice but couldn’t get to a doctor in time. I may got off my antivirals for a while just to see if I can get some symptoms that might be easier to test...
I wonder if getting the Covid vaccine could have something to do with this. It has been shown to cause a reactivación of varicella in some people. I had that terrible outbreak with herpetic rash all over my torso, ache in my arms, whitlow on finger, not long after getting the J&J
